https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/Page/Name/uspstf-a-and-b-recommendations/

For the master’s-prepared nurse, knowledge of epidemiology and its application to preventive screening guidelines is important in many clinical areas: administrative, education, and nurse practitioner fields. Consider that you are working in a clinic and need to order preventive screening for a patient for one of the conditions listed below. (While this is a preventative measure, it also can be a diagnostic tool in other circumstances. For this assignment, the screening is a secondary prevention measure.)

Please select one screening below. Your screening methodology must come from the United States Preventive Services Task Force guidelines.

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Diabetes mellitus II
  • Lung cancer

Condition and Screening

  • Include the condition and type of screening are both identified and defined. Screening choice is one from the assignment directions.

Epidemiology of Condition

  • Include a correct definition of the condition and define the epidemiology of the condition in the United States, via three statistical terms. Include the correct mortality and related morbidity statistics in numerical format and address trends using terms such as increasing, larger or less, related disparities, and population rate comparison (race, sex, age, etc.).

Methodology

  • Incorporate the USPSTF guideline development methodology process into the methodology section of the paper.
  • Discuss the population for the screening guideline using age, sex or related characteristic and includes information on two risk factors addressed in the guideline methodology.
  • Justify the screening based on these risks using statistical rationale.
  • Explain and support the screening measures.

Guideline

  • Summarize the USPSTF guideline recommendation and include population characteristics, screening type, and interval.
  • Include most current recommendations.

Critical Analysis

  • Conduct a literature review of the guideline’s support and may include alternative studies found in more recent literature supporting or offering alternative views.
  • Cite four studies in the analysis.

Assignment Instructions

Sleep Journal and Reflection Project

During our forum in Week 5, we are discussing dreams. The meaning, origin, and analysis of dreams have fascinated psychologists since the inception of the field of psychology. Sigmund Freud, often referred to as the father of psychology, focused a great deal of his theoretical energy on trying to understand and interpret dreams.

Contemporary psychologists are beginning to recognize the interconnectivity of human physiology and psychology in a way not previously understood. This is in part because of new interest in holistic health and in part because of brain/body connections we are now able to see and understand for the first time due to enhanced technology. Yoga, mindfulness, healthy eating, meditation, holistic health – all of these practices are gaining more traction in mainstream society and among psychological circles as we recognize how the mind and body work together. In light of this growing area of interest in psychology, for this assignment you will maintain a sleep/dream journal during weeks 3 and 4, and complete an analysis and reflection on your experience in a summary reflection paper in week 5.

Specifically, for this assignment you will:

  • Keep a sleep/dream journal for at least 10 days throughout Weeks 3 and 4. In your journal make note of:
    • any dreams you had
    • any initial thoughts about the dream – events of the day that may relate, etc.
    • your general sleep schedule (if you have a tracker such as fitbit, include data on your sleep patterns as well – wakefulness, restlessness, times asleep/awake per night, total sleep, etc.)
    • your general eating habits by day
    • your general exercise habits by day
    • anything else of note in your psychological or physical health (stress, excitement, changes, etc.)
  • You may use any format you wish to record the data (notepad, computer, hardcopy spreadsheet, etc.).
  • Complete a 3-4 page reflection (not counting title or reference pages) in which you analyze the results of your sleep/dream journal. Consider how your psychological and physical health interacted. What patterns did you see? Discuss the impact that various factors such as fatigue, diet, stress and exercise had on your dreams and sleep patterns. Explain how this insight may impact your behaviors in the future to lead to better psychological and physical health.
  • Utilize at least 2 academic resources (your text can be one of these) to support your analysis and discussion.
  • Assignment Deadline: 11:55pm Eastern Time Sunday at the end of Week 5 of the course term. Submission should include:
    • Title page in APA format
    • Reflection minimum 3 pages, double spaced
    • Reference page in APA format
    • If desired (this is optional), a copy of the original data/journal

Assignment Grading Rubric – Total 100 points:

  • Provided a thoughtful analysis of how physical and psychological health interact, particularly in connecting waking behaviors with sleep and dreams. Max. 30 points
  • Provided detailed evidence in the form of examples and data to support analysis and conclusions. Max. 25 points
  • Described how the information gleaned from the analysis will or will not impact future behaviors and awareness. Max 20 points
  • Incorporated references from at least two academic sources. Max 10 points
  • Writing was clear, focused, organized and grammatically correct with few to no errors in spelling, punctuation, or sentence structure. Max 15 points

Summarize the methods used in the research and the conclusions made by the researchers. Describe the key aspects of the research that reflect behaviorist principles.

Think of how your behavior can change due to conditioning effects—how rewards and punishment have shaped your own behavior over the years. What role have rewards and punishment played in your life? For example, how did your parents encourage you to learn multiplication tables or drive a car? Even job incentives can be framed in terms of rewards and punishment to improve employee performance.

In preparation for this assignment, research behaviorism and some of the classic John Watson and B. F. Skinner studies. It is important to understand the basic principles of behaviorism and how behaviorism fits into psychology research today. Find a peer-reviewed research study that addresses the theory or treatment of phobias that was published within the last eight years.

Directions

Complete the following:

1. Conditioning treatment of phobias. Find a peer-reviewed research study published within the last eight years that addresses the theory or treatment of phobias. Summarize the methods used in the research and the conclusions made by the researchers. Describe the key aspects of the research that reflect behaviorist principles.

2. Conditioning related to personal behavior. Describe how conditioning explains changes in your own behavior that you have observed at work or at home. Provide three examples. (If your examples are from personal experience, your descriptions may be in first person.) Be sure to relate theory and research to your examples. For example, you might describe how behavioral theory would explain your learning process in that situation. Cite scholarly articles to support your conclusions.

3. Relevance of conditioning today. Analyze how behaviorism is still relevant today. What are the limits of behaviorism? Are there processes that it does not explain well? For example, behaviorists believed that babies and children learned language through rewards and punishments, but today we know that language learning is a much more complex process. The behaviorist approach was not sufficient to explain the totality of language learning.

Strive to be as concise as possible and limit the length of your completed assignment to 5–6 pages of content.
