Chi-Square
To gain experience with applying hypothesis testing to a pair of qualitative (categorical) variables, you will be using data from the American National Election Studies (ANES) 2020 Social Media Study. The study was conducted by Stanford University and the University of Michigan. You will be using the March 8, 2021 version of the dataset. The dataset contains answers to survey questions from over 5,000 respondents. The data provided for you is a selection of variables from the actual dataset, with some minor modifications for usability in this course.

The variables in the dataset can be separated into two main groups: profile variables (that describe the survey respondent) and news/social media usage variables. You will select one profile variable and one news/social media usage variable to analyze using chi-square analysis. You will be using the data to determine whether there is a significant association between your two selected variables or not. There are many variables to choose from, so you must select a pair that has not been used by one of your classmates.
Carry out the following steps. Watch the Unit 8 Discussion video in the LiveBinder for a demonstration.
- Download the spreadsheet containing the Social Media Study data.
- Download the document that defines the variables and codes used. You will need this to be able to determine which are profile variables, which are news/social media usage variables, and to interpret the levels of each variable. For example, the profile variable “phoneservice” has levels 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. You need this document to find out what each code (number) means.
- In the Virtual Office, your instructor has posted a “Unit 8 Discussion Variable Selection Sheet.” You will use this spreadsheet to select a pair of variables to analyze in your discussion post. You will select a pair that consists of one qualitative variable from the list of news/social media usage variables and one qualitative profile variable from the list of profile variables. Enter your name in the spreadsheet beside the pair you wish to analyze. If a pair already has a name beside it, you must select a different pair.
- State your profile variable name, the survey question it represents (if one is given), and define the levels of the variable. State your news/social media usage variable name, the survey question it represents, and define the levels of the variable.
- What influenced your decision to choose those two variables?
- What is your research question? The question should be in the format of “Is there an association between ___ and ___?”
- What is the Ho and Ha?
- Use the Excel chi square worksheet to calculate your test statistic and p-value and generate an appropriate graphical display. (Note: This worksheet can only be used if you have no more than 8 rows and 8 columns.)
- Calculate the test statistic and p-value.
- Compare your p-value to alpha (assume alpha = 0.05) and state your decision.
- What is your conclusion in the context of your research question?
- Make a segmented bar chart with your variables using Excel, insert the image into your post using the snipping tool, and discuss the association or lack of association that you see from your graph in the context of your research question. Be specific. Remember that the graph should illustrate the decision you made regarding the hypothesis test.
