Homework 1

Behavioral Health Prevention Program

This assignment comprises two components, a behavioral health prevention program design and a behavioral health prevention summary report, addressing the behavioral and psychological factors promoting healthy living and disease prevention.

Part 1: Behavioral Health Prevention Program Design a behavioral health prevention program that outlines the program and addresses the following:

1. Program mission and vision, including theoretical knowledge of working with individuals and families in the community.

2. Stakeholders involved in the program: patients; paraprofessionals; therapists; educational institutions; public health, government, and community agencies; the local community; etc.

3. Roles and responsibilities of stakeholders.

4. Behavioral and psychological barriers that impede behavior modification and disease prevention: role of behavior and prevention in maintaining health.

5. Recommendations for behavior modification and disease prevention: factors promoting healthy living and factors promoting disease prevention.

Include four scholarly resources for evidentiary support.

Part 2: Behavioral Health Prevention Summary Report Write a summary report (1,250-1,500 words) about the information gleaned from the behavioral health prevention program design process. Include information on the program’s mission and vision, the stakeholders, behavior and psychological barriers, and recommendations for behavior modifications. Use three scholarly resources to support your explanations. For example, if you chose a specific program design or intervention does the literature support this as being an effective program? Was it successful and how do you know it was successful? Have other prevention programs found measureable outcomes that you plan to replicate?  How does your program build on a successful program to target the community you’re serving?

Homework 2

Stress Case Study

Choose one of the case studies presented in the document “Topic 3 Case Studies.” After reading the case study, in 500-750 words, formulate a plan to help the individual in your chosen case study cope with their stress. Using research list specific steps the individual should take and reasons those steps are important to their coping with the stress. Then, based on the research, discuss the effectiveness of the coping techniques your chose for the individual.

Case Study 1

Julie is a 42-year-old female who is reporting headaches, difficulty sleeping, and has developed several viral infections over the last few months. She has been to see her regular doctor who suggested she talk to a counselor. Julie reports high levels of stress at her job. Her department is understaffed and operating under tight deadlines. Julie has been working extra hours to help meet those deadlines. At home, Julie finds herself exhausted and fighting with her husband. Her children, ages 9, 7, and 3 have begun acting out and she reports that she is shorter-tempered with them than usual. Julie’s mother is 79 and fell while getting the mail resulting in a broken hip. While she is out of the hospital, she needs rides to physical therapy and assistance around her house.

Case Study 2

Claire is a 20-year-old college junior. She recently transferred to a school 3 hours away from home to attend their nursing program. Her schoolwork is demanding, and, being a transfer student, she has found it difficult to make friends, as many of her classmates already know each other from freshman year. Her boyfriend of 3 years is living in her hometown, and they do not get to see each as much as they would like. Claire had to quit her job to keep up with her school work, and she does not have any extra money. She can barely pay her rent and afford groceries. Claire has begun having difficulty sleeping, and feels anxious most of the time. She often finds herself crying and, lately, has been having a lot of stomach pain.

Case Study 3

Joseph is a 63-year-old man who recently retired. While he was looking forward to retirement, he now is unsure of how to fill the hours in the day. He worries constantly about finances and checks his bank account multiple times a day. He spends a great deal of time looking for ways to save money, as he fears his retirement will run out. Joseph’s wife of 30 years is not used to having him around the house so much, and they are constantly arguing. Joseph has begun experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath.

Discussion – Week 4

Bipolar Disorders

This abstract from Nature Reviews Disease Primers (Vieta et al., 2018) offers a succinct way to think about bipolar disorders:

Bipolar disorders are chronic and recurrent disorders that affect >1% of the global population. Bipolar disorders are leading causes of disability in young people as they can lead to cognitive and functional impairment and increased mortality, particularly from suicide and cardiovascular disease. Psychiatric and nonpsychiatric medical comorbidities are common in patients and might also contribute to increased mortality. Bipolar disorders are some of the most heritable psychiatric disorders, although a model with gene-environment interactions are believed to best explain the etiology. Early and accurate diagnosis is difficult in clinical practice as the onset of bipolar disorder is commonly characterized by nonspecific symptoms, mood lability, or a depressive episode, which can be similar in presentation to unipolar depression. Moreover, patients and their families do not always understand the significance of their symptoms, especially with hypomanic or manic symptoms. As specific biomarkers for bipolar disorders are not yet available, the careful clinical assessment remains the cornerstone of diagnosis. The detection of hypomanic symptoms and longitudinal clinical assessment is crucial to differentiate bipolar disorder from other conditions. Optimal early treatment of patients with evidence-based medication (typically mood stabilizers and antipsychotics) and psychosocial strategies is necessary.

To prepare for the Discussion:

  • Review Chapter 6 of the textbook.
  • Review the media pieces listed in the Learning      Resources.
  • Review the expectations in the Discussion Rubric.

Consider the following scenario:

Betty came to her second session with you describing what appear to be manic and depressive episodes. You have valid questions and concerns and want to get a formal psych eval.

How would you explain to Betty that you have concerns about her symptoms and want to refer her to see a psychiatrist for evaluation? Write out a mini script showing what you, the counselor, might say to Betty.

By Day 3

Respond to the following prompts using a mini script.

  • Provide an explanation of why counselors refer clients to a psychiatrist for a psych eval (what is and what is not in our scope of practice).
  • Explain what collaborative behavioral healthcare is.
  • Include a description of two circumstances when a counselor would refer a client for a psych evaluation.
  • Describe two circumstances when a counselor would use the Release of Information (ROI) signed by a client.
  • Include an empathetic reflection to Betty.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Behavior Intervention Plan

The school has asked Brian to help formulate a Behavior Plan by completing two documents. You can download these files by clicking on the links below:

  • Behavior Intervention Plan
  • Behavior Charts (choose one, or create a new concept)
  • Observation Recording Forms

Be sure to address Kaiden’s behaviors at school as well as those at home. For example, you could include a reinforcement scheme that is contingent on good or bad reports each day from Kaiden’s teacher. You may also find it helpful to refer to the Observation Recording Form the school sent to Brian earlier. Use references from this module and include APA in-text citations.

Blog Topic – Week 2

I’d Hate to Lose My . . .

Clearly, the brain is a vital part of the body. But suppose you were the subject of a diabolical experiment looking at the functions of the various brain areas. A mad scientist wants to do “removal studies” in order to isolate these functions. The mad scientist does have a heart though–he lets his subjects decide which brain structures they’d like to give up. If you were a subject in this heinous (and thankfully fictional) experiment, which three brain structures would you be willing to give up?

Week 2 Assignment

Chapter 3

1. Do you think it’s possible that personality is completely localized in one portion of the brain? If so, how could you explain the fact that someone’s personality can seem to change depending on the situation?

2. Other than as a treatment for epilepsy, can you think of any situations in which having a split brain might actually be more beneficial than a unified brain?

3. Initiation of the flight or fight response clearly has adaptive value. Can you think of any circumstances in which this response might actually lower the chances of an adaptive response?

4. Define the field known as neuroscience.

5.What is the function of the endocrine system? What are hormones? What does the pituitary gland do?

6. Distinguish between a genotype and a phenotype.

Chapter 4

TV Characters and Erikson’s stages

In this exercise, it’s your assignment to watch TV! Look over Erikson’s stages and the “psychosocial conflicts” that he claims are encountered by people entering various stages of life.

Television shows are filled with people in different stages of life (although you will find more TV shows focusing on the 20-50 set than on any other). Pick out four characters (or real people, in the case of talk shows) from TV shows that differ substantially in age, covering different parts of the life span. These characters might be in four different shows, or might all be in the same show. What are the everyday trials and tribulations experienced by these characters? What are their main concerns or worries? Do they fit in with Erikson’s stages of development? Explain.
