Discuss how Christian Ethics (including the relevant biblical, theological, philosophical, and historical aspects) would address the ethical issue and compare or contrast this to how your two ethical theories would solve the issue.

Prepare an applied ethics presentation (12-15 slides, with speaker notes)

creating a 12-15 slide power-point presentation. I’m included a sample of a strong powerpoint below, but it was done for a slightly different assignment, so keep this in mind.
I first want to give you a formatting tip: you need strong argument and aesthetic/rhetorical effectiveness. In a powerpoint, the best way to achieve this is to keep your slides reserved for bullet-points and visual aids, and put the majority of your argument in the notes.
For this powerpoint, you will need to choose a particular ethical debate that is currently relevant in your field. You will need to:
1) Explain the issue from an ethical perspective, equally presenting the strengths and weaknesses of both sides of the debate: why does each side think what they think? In doing so, make sure that you identify the crux questions: those questions on which the debate as a whole turns.
2) You will need to choose two of the primary moral theories/thinkers that we’ve covered in this course and explain how each would respond to/solve the ethical dilemma in question. Make sure that you explain their theories before attempting to apply them.
3) Discuss how Christian Ethics (including the relevant biblical, theological, philosophical, and historical aspects) would address the ethical issue and compare or contrast this to how your two ethical theories would solve the issue.
4) Choose a model of moral decision making and, given the data that you’ve presented in the points above, use that model to work through finding a solution to the issue.
5) Provide a concluding summary argument for your own solution to the debate, which should be reflected in the work that you’ve done on the above points.

This chapter is so provocative. I’m sure it led you to think a lot about your life and your behavior- conformity, compliance, obedience, and helping behavior.

1. Pick one of these main topics (conformity, compliance, obedience, helping/bystander effect) and critically analyze it. For example, under what circumstances is it good or ethical? Under what circumstances is it bad or unethical? I’m looking for a careful analysis of the topic, as none of them are black or white subjects.

2. Weave in two terms (and bold them) accurately throughout your analysis. Make sure that the terms you weave in are aiding in your analysis of the topic and not taking you off topic.

For example, you can analyze whether using compliance techniques is ethical and under what circumstances. You can weave in some techniques into your argument/analysis.

For example, you can analyze whether conformity is good or bad in different circumstances. You can weave in normative social influence, informational social influence, public compliance without private acceptance, etc.

For example, you can analyze whether obedience to authority is good or bad in different situations. You can weave in norms, foot-in-the-door-effect, etc.

The Problem: The Case of the Brightest and the Best

From the increased communication and reports, the Board of Directors has indicated that new hires have to be one of the company’s top priorities, despite the fact that the financial situation remains unstable. In the current job market, finding new hires at the salaries the Gnomengen Group can afford is very difficult. Faced with increased pressure for more manpower from all levels, you have decided to examine current hiring practices and policies.

One proposed solution to the hiring situation is to advertise your positions at salaries above what you know you can pay. When applicants are interviewed, they are told that their skills do not match “the optimal skill set we were assuming in advertising that salary.” Thus, if they want the job, they are forced to take the lower salary that you intended to pay from the beginning, with the promise that if their skill set increases, they may be able to work up to the pay scale that you had advertised. The expectation is that by drawing on a larger applicant pool, the number of hires should increase, and because of stock options employee retention is expected to stay high.

  3. Assumptions

In two or three bullet points, identify any assumptions you are making about the problem.

Develop a sobriety card that contains people and resources the client (Jed) could call if he felt he was were at risk to relapse. (e.g., sponsor, family members, crisis hotline) Include why that person/resource should be included.

Develop a relapse prevention plan based upon the “Jed Assessment Case Study” provided. The plan should be in a format that might be given to the client to use as a guide. The plan must address the following:

  1. Client name and age
  2. Client’s family situation
  3. What is the client’s agreement to stop using drugs/alcohol? Be specific. For example: Does the client commit to attending AA meetings? If so, how many?
  4. If the client relapses, what is the client’s plan to get help?
  5. What high-risk situations could trigger a relapse for the client?
  6. What high-risk behaviors or irrational thoughts could lead to relapse?
  7. What coping skills may help the client remain sober?
  8. What new activities could the client participate in to help replace old behaviors such as going out with his friends, for a drink, etc. after work? How many? How often?
  9. How would Jed’s family be involved in his relapse prevention plan?
  10. How would Jed’s family and ethnic culture impact his relapse prevention plan?
  11. What resources are available in the community to help Jed prevent relapse? (use resources that are available in your community/area)
  12. Develop a sobriety card that contains people and resources the client (Jed) could call if he felt he was were at risk to relapse. (e.g., sponsor, family members, crisis hotline) Include why that person/resource should be included.
