Warm-up Activity 5.1
Review note taking tools. Visit the Northcentral library. In the category “Research Help” click on “Research Process”. Then click “Organizing Research & Citations” on the left-hand menu. Explore the available resources. Also visit the Zotero and Citeulike websites and review these online note taking and organizing tools. Choose a tool that best fits your need and you feel most comfortable with.

Warm-up Activity 5.2
Carefully study the following example of how to prepare an annotated bibliography entry. Note that there are four sections to the entry: hypothesis, methodology, conclusion, and evaluation. Be sure to include each of these sections in your annotated bibliography entries. For information on annotated bibliographies, visit the “Conducting Research” and “Forms of Writing” sections in the Northcentral University Academic Success Center (ASC) (click the links in the left side navigation area of the Academic Success Center (ASC) screen ).

Assignment

Begin an annotated bibliography of the articles that you are reviewing. Note all the important sections of the article, as illustrated in the sample above. Also, note not only the articles that you plan to use, but also any article that you read. Be sure to note at the end of the article how useful the article may be for your literature review.

Include the articles you reviewed in Week 3, so that there is a total of 15 articles in this version of your Annotated Bibliography. Add a one-page paper that reflects your experiences with note taking and research tools. Identify those that include features you would like to use and which one, if any, you have adopted for your own use.

Please note that the same rules for citation that apply to other documents (such as proper paraphrasing and the use of quotation marks where necessary) apply to Annotated Bibliographies as well. It is not acceptable to cut and paste from the abstract or the body of an article. Rather, the student is expected to read the article completely and appropriately paraphrase the necessary material. For those few situations where paraphrasing is not acceptable, then material that has not been paraphrased needs to be placed in quotation marks. This week, you explore classical (i.e., seminal, important and older) and contemporary (i.e., more recent) developmental theories. Theories are vital to the psychology profession, as they inform practice, research, and trends. You must critically evaluate theories to determine which theories are applicable to certain developmental processes. For each theory, examine the construct (e.g., cognition, motivation, intelligence, etc.) that has been emphasized. Think about how this construct relates to developmental processes. For example, a toddler’s intelligence differs in quality from an adult’s intelligence. By examining developmental theories of intelligence, such as Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory of Intelligence, you can gain an understanding of the basis for developmental differences in toddler and adult intelligence.

When examining theories, it is important to delineate the strengths and limitations of each theory. Think about how each theory accounts for atypical development or a developmental delay. If a specific construct is identified, ask yourself: Can the theory be extended to apply to other constructs, as well? Does the theory adequately predict future behavior? How would one apply a particular theory to help improve people’s lives? Keep these questions in mind as you examine classical and contemporary theories.

Philosophical Differences Between Qualitative and Quantitative Paradigms and Approaches

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 1 in the Frost e-book, Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology, and the required journal articles for this week. Also review last week’s PSY635 Week Two Discussion Scenario (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. In that scenario, the three instructors realized there are limits to the insights they can gain through anonymous counting of discussion posts. The instructors would like to answer two additional research questions: (a) How do their students actually feel about the intervention? and (b) How do students view the influence of the intervention on their learning inside and outside of the classroom (if applicable)?

In your initial post, compare the characteristics of appropriate research designs and recommend a qualitative research design that would facilitate answering the instructors’ additional questions. Explain the philosophical paradigm underlying the recommended approach. Evaluate the required articles for this week and describe the  assumptions the instructors might have to set aside as they enter into a qualitative research study. Be sure to identify any ethical issues that may apply to the research. Review the characteristics of the quantitative approach you described in the Week Two discussion. Explain the ways in which the quantitative approach and paradigm differs from the qualitative approach and paradigm you have recommended here.
