Have illnesses become so complex that we need to be “experts” in one specific system?

In healthcare we have become more specialized and more divided. Each unit seems to have a specific focus and no longer are general Med-Surg floors taking up the bulk of acute care facilities. Using what we’ve learned this week discuss if you believe this is a good thing or a bad thing for the nursing profession.
In other words:
Have illnesses become so complex that we need to be “experts” in one specific system?
orIs it detrimental to patient care to have nurses caring for complex patients who focus specifically on specific systems.
