Life Plan Assignment

Throughout our lives, most of us experience several significant events, or “life events.” Educational pursuits, career aspirations, recreational interests, marital life, children and end-of-life preferences are common subjects. The emotion surrounding these events varies, but each should cause us to examine our future (and past) to ensure we’re making the best decisions possible for ourselves, our friends, and our families.

A life plan is a detailed description of your decisions, intentions, hopes and dreams. A detailed life plan is instructive for creating greater clarity regarding life priorities and next steps.

Assignment instructions:

Pick a topic of interest in human growth and development. This could be something that you worry about in the future (i.e., your father getting Alzheimer’s Disease) or something that happened in the past that you wish had been handled better (i.e., your best friend was bullied in the 6th grade and you didn’t know what to do at the time) or something you are concerned about now (i.e., your friend is bulimic.)

Ways to identify a topic:

  1. List your mental, emotional, spiritual, physical and/or material needs.
  2. Identify your strengths and talents.
  3. Consider your hopes and dreams.

Once you have a topic.

  1. Outline concrete goals for dealing with your topic that satisfy things you identified in 1-3 above.
  2. Find academic research that supports your goals.
  3. Examine the details of your plan: How feasible is it? What issues might arise that would interfere with your plan? Do you have alternatives?

Your plan must cite at least three academic articles that offer support to your plan.  Your paper should be at least 2 pages long, double-spaced and follow APA format.

· Should the context in which the artwork was created (the Great Depression of the 1930s in the case of the Benton and Arnautoff murals) have an impact on the decision of what to do with the artwork?

Google <California Washington mural>. You will find numerous reports concerning a California school district that voted to paint over a mural in the high school. The Life of Washington was painted by Depression-era artist Victor Arnautoff.

Look at the images

For the initial post, address at least four (4) of the following questions for the option you selected:

· What do you think should be done with the artwork (e.g., painted over, covered, destroyed, left as is in plain view, etc.)? Why?

· Should the context in which the artwork was created (the Great Depression of the 1930s in the case of the Benton and Arnautoff murals) have an impact on the decision of what to do with the artwork?

· Should the context in which people now view the artwork have an impact on the decision of what to do with it?

· What message do you think the artwork conveys?

· Do you think there is ambiguity in the message?

· Do you think the message is vague?

· Does the artistic value of the artwork require that it be saved regardless of message?

· Does the historic value of the artwork require that it be saved regardless of message?

· Do you think the message of the artwork is sufficiently important that the message alone requires that it be saved?

· Do you think the artists were biased or prejudiced? If yes, explain specifics about the artwork that support your opinion. Do you think viewers might be bringing bias or prejudice to their opinions? Are you?

APA  7 – 400 words, no repetition, correct grammar. Answer at least 4 questions.

2 scholarly articles from the last 5 years.

Identify the independent variable and dependent variable. Indicate the number of levels in the independent variable and describe each level.

  • Read the following study scenario:Researchers are interested in the effectiveness of a particular treatment for insomnia. They contact 50 insomnia sufferers who responded to a newspaper advertisement to participate in the study. Each participant is given a pill with instructions to take it before going to sleep that night. The pill actually contains milk powder (a placebo). The participants are randomly assigned to receive one of two sets of instructions about the pill. One half of the participants are told that the pill will make them feel “sleepy,” and the other half are told that the pill will make them feel “awake and alert.” The next day the participants return to the lab and are asked to indicate how long it took them to fall asleep after taking the pill. The individuals who were told that the pill would make them feel sleepy reported that they fell asleep faster than the participants who were told the pill would make them feel alert.
Think about the concepts you read about this week about one-way experimental designs and analysis of variance (ANOVA), and how they apply to the above study.

The Assignment (1–2 pages):

With the study scenario in mind, complete the following:

  1. Identify the independent variable and dependent variable. Indicate the number of levels in the independent variable and describe each level.
  2. Indicate whether the research used a between-participants or a within-participants research design and how you determined this to be the case.
  3. Presume a third condition was added to the study. In this condition, the participants are not given any information about the effects of the (placebo) pill. Next, suppose an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted. Briefly interpret, in your own words, what it would mean if the F was significant as applied to this study.

Regardless of the clients age as counselors it is important to for us to be competent in the career counseling aspect of life. The topic of careers can impact individuals and families in different ways and arise in a unexpected time in a session (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012).

Please no plagiarism and make sure you are able to access all resource on your own before you bid. Main references come from Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M. D. (2012) and/or American Psychological Association (2010). You need to have scholarly support for any claim of fact or recommendation regarding treatment. I have also attached my discussion rubric so you can see how to make full points. Please respond to all 3 of my classmates separately with separate references for each response. You need to have scholarly support for any claim of fact or recommendation like peer-reviewed, professional scholarly journals. I need this completed by 06/28/19 at 6pm.

Expectation:

Responses to peers. Note that this is measured by both the quantity and quality of your posts. Does your post contribute to continuing the discussion? Are your ideas supported with citations from the learning resources and other scholarly sources? Note that citations are expected for both your main post and your response posts. Note also, that, although it is often helpful and important to provide one or two sentence responses thanking somebody or supporting them or commiserating with them, those types of responses do not always further the discussion as much as they check in with the author. Such responses are appropriate and encouraged; however, they should be considered supplemental to more substantive responses, not sufficient by themselves.

Read a your colleagues’ postings. Respond to your colleagues’ postings.

Respond in one or more of the following ways:

· Ask a probing question.

· Share an insight gained from having read your colleague’s posting.

· Offer and support an opinion.

· Validate an idea with your own experience.

· Make a suggestion.

· Expand on your colleague’s posting.

1. Classmate (T. Rat)

In the live chat with Dr. Capuzzi this week, the takeaway points for me were:

Technology:

For professional counselors technological changes means there may not be a need to relocate. Teleconferencing is now available and this provides an ability to reach clients in remote areas or clients can set up an appointment through your online private practices. In addition to easier access to clients, by accessing the Internet, counselors have a plethora of resources, research, updated code of ethics and continuing education.

Technology obviously provides many amenities for clients, as well. With mental health awareness has come easier opportunities for clients to reach out for help. There have been 24/7 crises lines have been around for quite some time for persons feeling depressed or have other mental health needs and need to talk to someone. Now there is a 24/7 text connecting option in the United States. If overwhelmed, suffering anxiety, depression, all a person needs to do is text 741741 and someone will text back immediately. Texts will continue or can change to a telephone call if requested, and the person will ‘stay with’ the person until s/he feels they are going to be okay or referred.

Rapport Building:

Dr. Capuzzi talked about the necessity of getting to know the total person and not be swayed by preset ideals, bias, or other based on culture, looks, etc. Digging into from a holistic mindset, considering all areas of the person’s world to better understand them and for the client to understand him/herself and come to the best options.

Assessment:

There were questions about the best career assessment instruments to be used for different populations. Dr. Capuzzi surprised me when he said he doesn’t put a lot of weight on assessments. He explained that he liked to discuss with clients what the assessment was all about, what it was described to reveal and how it was to aide in his/her career search. He then asks the client what they think the assessment will report and afterward review with client any differences. I think this is a great idea because it will provide the client with a baseline of what they think they know about one self.

2. Classmate (Y. Tho)

Meaningful Topic

Dr. Capuzzi  talked about addressing the whole person being important. This reminds me of the DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) which focuses on mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation. These are all areas that should be focused on when treating the person as a whole. This is important to me because the clients are more than just a mental illness they are a person that needs to be well in all areas, mentally and physically.

Incorporate into practice

I would use (DBT) to teach people how to live in the moment, cope with stress, regulate emotions and improve relations with others. This therapy was originally designed for people with borderline personality disorder, but has evolved to assist with self-harm, eating disorders, substance abuse and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

Three take away points

Working towards your career and gaining experience to put a visual on the field is important. The amount of classes that are required since Dr. Capuzzi was in college has changed and there was no licensure for counselors. The profession has evolved since he began his career. You could get a job with a Bachelors Degree at different locations but now a Masters if required. There was no such thing as a clinical mental health counselor.

3. Classmate (G. Mac)

Regardless of the clients age as counselors it is important to for us to be competent in the career counseling aspect of life. The topic of careers can impact individuals and families in different ways and arise in a unexpected time in a session (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012).

Meaningful Topic

Dr. Capuzzi discussed the topic of being in school and financial trying to survive and the hardship people go through when going back to school and having to pay off the student loan debt (Laureate Education, 2019). This is a topic that I know people in my environment have decided just to stick with their current career instead of going back to school. They have mentioned to me that they done want the debt or the stress that comes along with the debt, so they would rather be in a career they are not happy in. I recently had a client that just graduated from high school and this as well was a concern for him, his parents could afford for him to attend college, so his fear was not being able to pay for it on his own. He was also unsure of what he wanted to do with his life career wise. This will assist me in the future to understand what theories might be good to work with, in cases like my client an adolescent fresh out of high school showing fear and anxiety for the cost of school and what he wants to do with his life.

Take Away Points

The importance of this course was one point that I feel was something to take away from.  Going into the semester, I thought I would lose interest in this topic. However, I am learning a lot of techniques which I can apply with my clients currently. This is where it is important to be informed on this topic as you never know when this topic will come up in a session. Career isn’t just about a person looking for a job it has other stressor that may impact an individual or family system (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). A second take away point of Career Expert Session was the use of technology, technology is something that keeps growing and evolving. Currently, we use technology and the Internet for almost everything. Technology advances is a tool used to help an individual search for a job, network to search for a job, create documents needed to apply for a job and assist in an individual furthering their education (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). Dr. Capuzzi discussed the difference in requirements for aspiring counselors from the time he was in school. Dr. Capuzzi mentioned how the course requirement were less when he was school compared to now. This has led aspiring counselors currently to have to give not only more time to education but money to pay for the required courses that have been known to cause stress once the counselor finishes school they have a student loan debt to pay off (Laureate Education, 2019).
