Discussion – Week 6

Discussion: Treatment of Addiction

While there is considerable variation across strengths-based treatment models, all of them are bound by core characteristics: They “honor the principle of client self-determination, attend to the client’s stage of readiness, and focus on the resources and capabilities the client and client’s family may use to further their goals” (Van Wormer & Davis, 2018, p. 316). These are essential to the client’s motivation and engagement in treatment, and honor the client’s own role in recovery.

As you review the assigned readings this week, think about which strengths-based treatment approach resonates with you. How does it align with what you have learned thus far about the etiology of addiction? Consider how you will integrate this knowledge into your toolbox in your efforts to become a clinician skilled in working with substance-related and addictive disorders.

Group counseling is a popular approach to addiction treatment. Like individual treatment, it offers its own unique benefits to participants. Some individuals may be hesitant to participate in a group, as they may feel self-conscious or embarrassed by what they perceive as their weaknesses or failings. However, the camaraderie and support offered by group counseling often quickly dispels such fears, and participants may be surprised by how beneficial the group process is on their recovery efforts.

Therapy groups often meet once per week, though more frequent sessions may be utilized depending on circumstances and levels of care, and are led by a licensed professional. Groups may be open or closed, gender limited or integrated, or have other qualifying requirements that can help focus the group interactions, as well as support goals and cohesiveness.

For this Discussion, you will choose one of the case vignettes in your Resources this week and one of the four treatment approaches discussed in Chapter 8 of your text: harm reduction, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, or cognitive behavioral therapy.

Post by Day 4 an overview of the treatment approach you selected for your chosen case study and why. Then, describe one strength and one weakness of your selected treatment approach. Lastly, identify two treatment goals for your client and how the treatment approach you selected would facilitate meeting the identified goals. Include in your discussion considerations for group versus individual treatment. Then, discuss how group treatment can support both relapse prevention efforts and the continuum of care.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Your post should be at least 200-250 words in length and should extend the discussion of the group supported by your course materials and/or other appropriate resources.

Discussions are fundamental to shared learning, so please be sure to participate early and often!

After you have completed the Reading, and without reviewing your classmate’s responses, post your initial response to the following Discussion. Your post should be at least 200-250 words in length and should extend the discussion of the group supported by your course materials and/or other appropriate resources.

After you have submitted your initial post, take time to review your classmates’ responses and to respond specifically and substantially to at least two of them. Refer to the Discussion Rubric in Course Resources for specific grading explanation.

Perception

In this unit you learned about perception, with a particular emphasis on visual perception.

This week you will be discussing what you have learned about perception and why it is important for psychologists to understand. Please make sure you answer all parts of the questions below.

RESPONSE 1 AMANDA:What is perception?
Perception is when we use our senses to become aware of a situation or something that we know. It can be something that we have learned from previous experience or something that we see, smell, or hear. There are two types of perceptual stimuli. Distal stimulus is the actual object that you see, and proximal stimulus is the information that registers when you see that object.
Understanding perception is important because it helps psychologists to understand how a person feels about their environment and how they feel about it based on previous experiences. If someone has had a bad experience with the ocean, they may not view it as beautiful place to visit on vacation. It would bring up negative feelings and seem scary or dreadful to them. Perception can help a psychologist to help change the person’s perception of the ocean to a more favorable one.
It is also important to know what bottom up and top down processing is. Top down processing is when we store information from past experiences or previous knowledge to understand what we perceive. Bottom up processing is when we perceive our environment strictly from what is going on around us.

Matlin, Margaret W., Thomas Farmer. Cognition, 9th Edition. Wiley, 2016. [Purdue University Global Bookshelf].

RESPONSE 2 DANAE:Perception is the way that we interpret information from our senses. Perception uses knowledge previously learned, memory and sensory stimuli to enable you to understand information presented or the environment. To make sense of the world around you perception uses the top down bottom up method to process information. Bottom up processing processes information as it comes in. Sort of like data collection of information. Top down method refers to how we process information that our brain has stored previously and recognizes (Matlin, Farmer 2016). I think that perception is important for psychologists to understand because it is the way that we as individuals make sense of the world around us using our senses. In working with people on a case by case bases our perceptions are unique and can drastically differ. It is important for psychologists to have a good understanding of perception to better communicate to the clients views and understanding and serve them from that point. If you cannot see and understand things from another’s perception therapy might not be successful.

Select at least three skills you believe you have demonstrated well in school or at work and provide illustrative examples of situations in which you have demonstrated the skills.

Enhancing Your Employability

You will need to develop two sets of skills to enhance your employability—hard skills and soft skills.

  • Hard skills include career-specific techniques, knowledge, and experience related to the tasks you will perform on the job. For example, to become a psychologist, you would need to develop hard skills such as knowledge of counseling theories, the ability to administer psychological tests, and the ability to diagnose mental illnesses.
  • Soft skills, on the other hand, are the skills you need to succeed interpersonally in any job. They are behaviors and attitudes that help you communicate effectively with others, either verbally or nonverbally. These have also been referred to as signs of emotional intelligence, people skills, or interpersonal skills.

In 2006, a consortium of four organizations conducted a survey of four hundred employers to determine which skills they most valued in recently hired employees. The employers listed soft skills as more desirable than hard skills. The employers listed the following skills as the most important (Conference Board et al., 2006): “professionalism/work ethic, oral and written communications, and teamwork/collaboration.” View a list of applied skills.

Tasks
In the Discussion Area, address the following:

  • Select at least three skills you believe you have demonstrated well in school or at work and provide illustrative examples of situations in which you have demonstrated the skills.
  • Select three skills you believe you need to acquire in order to further develop. Provide examples of situations in which you might have demonstrated weakness in those areas. Provide specific details when describing each of the situations. Cover the following:
    • How do you think you can improve your skills in those three areas?
    • Are there any specific steps you can take to increase your aptitude in those particular areas?

Submission Details

  • By the due date assigned, post your 100- to 150-word response to the  discussion.

Does anyone care? If so, who does and who doesn’t? In your answer, have you or anyone you know talked about this song, and, if so, what was said?

Same Love

If you listen to any American pop radio station, I’m sure you’ve probably heard the song, “Same Love,” by hiphop artist Macklemore (and Ryan Lewis feat. Mary Lambert). It’s actually been out for over a year, but is gaining greater airplay, especially after US Supreme Court rulings on marriage

For this discussion forum, I want you to do this:

1) First search and watch the full 7-minute video SAME LOVE by MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS. Listen to the lyrics and the words Macklemore uses to convey his message. Also, check out this interview with Macklemore where he discusses his reason for writing the song and his feelings/stance as a hip-hop artist, Catholic, and nephew of a gay uncle.

2) Pick two parts or lines within the song that stand out to you AFTER you’ve looked at the lyrics AND listened to the song. For each part, I want you to write 2-3 sentences about why those lines stand out or are meaningful to you, whether you like the song or not. What do you interpret the lines you’ve chosen to mean and why did you pick them? (Remember, 2-3 sentences for each of your two parts you’ve chosen!)

3) In your own words using 2-3 sentences, reflect on how you think society today — in 2013 — receives this song and its message. Does anyone care? If so, who does and who doesn’t? In your answer, have you or anyone you know talked about this song, and, if so, what was said? Was it positive, negative, indifferent? Funny? If you haven’t discussed it with anyone yet, wait to do your post until you’ve played the song for someone else and have a casual convo about it. I am not looking for you to do an experiment here, just want you to explore/gauge others’ reactions to this song and write about that in your answer.

4) Anything else about this song that you wish to share?
