Week 7 Postmodern approaches

Let’s collect some metaphors. You saw in the case Stan video on narrative therapy that Dr. Corey’s example of “editing a book” to change the way Stan understood his life story didn’t really work very well at first, because Stan couldn’t easily relate to that metaphor. Eventually, Corey came up with the metaphor of remodeling a house, because he knew that Stan worked in construction, and this new metaphor proved to be much more helpful. Therefore, I think it is a great idea to have a multitude of metaphors at the ready that might work with a variety of clients.

So when considering how re-writing a book might be similar to remodeling a house, describe one other metaphor for making a change in one’s life? Please share a fair amount of detail about the metaphor and how it might work to get a client thinking about changing their life story. Make sure to respond to classmates to move this discussion forward.

Choose one theoretical assumption or technique associated with the family systems perspectives we learned about this week that is very different from the individual approaches to counseling we learned about in previous weeks.

  • How might this assumption or technique be more helpful to clients than 1:1 counseling?
  • How might this assumption or technique be challenging for you to incorporate into your practice?

Select at least 2-3 peer reviewed articles (dated from 2015-present) which address concerns like those Doidge discussed in the chapter of your choice.

  • There is a final paper/project in this course. The final project is designed to help you connect the information you learned in this course to real-life problems. I would like to see you integrate information you have learned throughout the term with current trends in neuropsychological research. For the final paper, you will write a 4-5 page paper. You are to:
    • Select one of the chapters from our Norman Doidge book, The Brain that Changes Itself.
    • Include a brief overview of the chapter and the neurological disorders/concepts Doidge examined in his chapter.
    • Select at least 2-3 peer reviewed articles (dated from 2015-present) which address concerns like those Doidge discussed in the chapter of your choice.
    • Present current research findings, what the latest treatment approaches are for the given neuropsychological concerns discussed in the chapter, as well as your insights into what the future of neuropsychological treatment for the disorder you reviewed in the Doidge chapter looks like.
    • Support the points you make in your paper with relevant sources you select.
    • Be sure to include a discussion of the evidence available for the etiology of the disorder.
    • Use APA formatting guidelines.

Note: You may use your text as a reference, however, this will not count towards your 2-3 journal article requirements. You may find articles in the library. They have a very extensive collection.

A local shelter that receives funding from the National Institute of Health and Mental Health is upgrading its website. Along with several upgrades to the website, the web developer/consultant makes a suggestion that the shelter add a testimonial page where local citizens can describe their positive interactions with the shelter and its services. Since the web developer/consultant want to get that page up and running first, the developer suggests using some positive ratings and responses from Angie’s List® and other similar ratings sites that already have positive stories and experiences with the shelter.

The director of the shelter loves the idea of a testimonial page. She thinks it would really add to the community feel of the shelter. However, knowing her funding source, she researches the APA Ethics Code and believes the shelter would be acting inappropriately. To discuss the matter in further detail, the director of the shelter calls you for an ethics consult.

Explain to the individual in the scenario, in layperson’s terms, relevant theory and research that addresses the social psychological variables involved.

Social influence is pervasive. Understanding mechanisms by which our own behavior is influenced can help us intentionally shape the behavior of others.  In this discussion, we will consider various forms of social influence by creating an intervention designed to address a particular concern in one of many real world settings.

To inform your thinking on this topic, begin by reading “Harnessing the Science of Persuasion” (Cialdini, 2001), “Social Influence: Compliance and Conformity” (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004), “Cognitive Consequences of Forced Compliance” (Festinger & Carlsmith, 1959), “Behavioral Study of Obedience” (Milgram, 1963), and “Attribution Versus Persuasion as a Means for Modifying Behavior” (Miller, Brickman, & Bolen, 1975).

Then, imagine yourself as a consultant in one of the following scenarios.  You are responsible for developing a plan to modify behavior, which will be based on social psychological insight.  Select one of the following options and design a program, supporting your answer with scholarly and peer-reviewed sources. Explain to the individual in the scenario, in layperson’s terms, relevant theory and research that addresses the social psychological variables involved.  Summarize a clear intervention strategy, formulating advice regarding future behavior.

  • A business executive seeks assistance in creating a comprehensive plan to market a product. [You may choose the product.]
  • A lawyer is requesting insight regarding jury behavior in order to achieve more favorable trial outcomes.
  • A prominent member of the community is considering a run for political office and would like advice regarding successful campaign strategies.
  • A doctor is concerned about rising rates of illness due to personal behavior and wishes to provide appropriate counsel to patients in order to change behavior for the better. [You may specify the type of illness or behaviors, as necessary.]
  • A substance abuse counselor is alarmed by recent statistics on drug and alcohol use amongst younger and younger children and would like to design a targeted program to address this issue.
  • Other (as provided/approved by your instructor)
