This week you will demonstrate an ability to identify and discriminate between the basic verbal operants. There are many clear benefits to each of these operants, but what might limitations to teaching each of these be? How might you minimize these limitations when teaching your clients?

2- Reply to your peer’s post bellow.

There are various verbal operants that play a role in the development of communication and language. Each one has great benefits to a child’s language and speech. For example, learning how to mand(ask) for what they need or want can decrease maladaptive behaviors and give natural reinforcement to the child. With benefits comes limitations, when introducing each verbal operant to a child it is very important to reinforce each occurrence to gain momentum for that behavior to increase. When a teacher starts to fade the reinforcement, this can cause outburst and expectations of getting reinforced. For example, a child starts manding for Ipad independently and for the first few days the teachers gives him access each mand he does. What happens when the teacher stops giving the reinforcement each occurrence? Another limitation is the behavior of remembering the answer but not understanding the answer. For example, a child is learning to tact a police officer(community helper) and he is successfully tacting with no prompts. When a police officer walks by him one day and the teacher ask who is that, he says fire fighter this can show the skill was not functionally taught. Another limitation is when a child gives “robot” answers. For example, a child is working on answering intraverbals(what flies in the sky?) and the teacher accepts the answer airplane each time the question is asked. The child will always answer airplane if not provided with multiple answers. This can cause a child to not identify the various things that fly in the sky and only associate airplane with flying in the sky.

Unit 9, Discussion Prompt Option 2

The limitations to teaching basic verbal operant can be a struggle in  academic achievement, social participation and social communication. I could minimize these limitations when teaching  my clients by using different examples or activities focused around social settings. For instance, teaching tacting I would focus on a social setting such as a park or a community center and teach different tacting items in the different locations.

Describe the diagnostic criteria for each disorder. List the interview questions that you used. Explain why you chose those questions. Summarize the responses given to your questions.

Assignment 2: Interview Analysis

While you can read a great deal about various disorders, being able to identify such disorders when they are present is challenging. To assist you with visualizing the disorders you are studying, you will have the opportunity to view interviews with clients who have been diagnosed with various disorders.

  • Click here to visit Faces of Abnormal Psychology.
  • Select High Resolution or Low Resolution, depending on your computer specifications.
  • Choose from the Select a Disorder menu, and then click View Disorder.

When the new window opens, select the Diagnostic, Case History, Interview, and Treatment tabs to watch the respective videos. As you watch the interviews, note the identifiable diagnostic criteria.

For this week you will be reviewing the following disorders:

  • ADHD
  • Tourette’s syndrome
  • Paranoid schizophrenia

For each disorder:

  1. First review the diagnosis and case history of the disorder.
  2. Go to the interview section and choose at least 3 themes, asking at least one question for each.
  3. Make sure to keep notes on the questions and the answers that were given.
  4. Prepare a case summary covering the following points.
    • Describe the diagnostic criteria for each disorder.
    • List the interview questions that you used. Explain why you chose those questions. Summarize the responses given to your questions.
    • Describe the treatments for each disorder.

Write your responses in a Microsoft Word document, and name it PSY2010_W2_A2_lastname_firstname.doc. By Saturday, January 23, 2016, submit your response to W2 Assignment 2 Dropbox.

Complete the Week 2 CheckPoint by posting your response as a discussion post:

  • Emily is a fifth-grade student who completed a standardized reading test. She scored one standard deviation above the mean score. How does the normal curve help you understand what this means about how your child compares to other children who took the test? Explain how you determined your findings. How many children scored lower than your child? How many scored higher?

Respond to at least one CheckPoint response made by another student.

Note: Your initial post does not count toward your participation grade because you also submitted it for a grade in the Week 2 CheckPoint assignment. However, your responses to the faculty and/or other students can count toward a substantive discussion post.

Choose one family from the videos and briefly describe their circumstances as if they were an identified client

The federal government has assumed responsibility for educating children living on federal property since the 1800s by paying those children’s school tuition. The advent of the Korean War led to a significant increase in military housing. Military installations began building schools on federal properties in the southern states in the early 1950s.

There are several reasons why military children began attending schools on military installations rather than the local public schools, also known as Local Education Activities (LEAs). One significant reason is related to desegregation. Desegregation in the U.S. Military occurred prior to desegregation in public education. To support its own desegregation policies and the type of community these policies fostered, the government established desegregated schools for the children of military personnel.

In addition, state law prohibited the expenditure of tax revenues for the education of children living on federal property. The military decided to build its own schools for the children of military personnel rather than paying for these children to attend local public schools.

At present, all stateside U.S. Department of Defense Educational Activity (DoDEA) schools fall under the responsibility of the Department of Defense Title 10 under the direction of the Secretary of Defense. The overseas schools (or, DoDDS) fall under the responsibility of Title 20, Department of Education (DoDEA; School Boards for Department of Defense Domestic Schools Training Materials, 2012).

Throughout the years, there have been many changes and shifts, as well as attempts to reintegrate children into LEAs. From time to time, the cost of supporting the schools is brought into question. In addition, whenever a military installation closes, its associated school, if any, closes too.

Not all military children attend schools on military installations. Many receive quality educations at their LEAs. Regardless if a military child attends a school on a military installation or an LEA, it is important for helping professionals to know the types of education available to military children, to know how to support the needs of these students, and to know the laws that protect and support the social, emotional, and academic success of military children.

For this paper, take into account what you have learned so far about military culture, review the two videos assigned this week, and conduct some additional research to deepen your understanding of the education of military children.

Submit a 3- to 4-page paper in which you:

  1. Choose one family from the videos and briefly describe their circumstances as if they were an identified client
  2. Explain how the DoDEA school system could be utilized to help the family you chose
  3. Analyze how the scenarios discussed or circumstances may have been different in a civilian school
  4. Explain what social work strategies you would utilize with this family
  5. Explain how military culture played a part in this scenario

Be specific in your answers and provide examples. Cite the resources and any additional resources you use. Be sure to follow APA guidelines in your research, writing, and citation.
