What are Hector’s behaviors and how are these impacting his adjustment? How might Hector’s cultural heritage     be impacting his adjustment to his injury?

Hector is a 35-year-old Hispanic male. Hector was seriously injured   in an auto accident 5 months ago. He spent 4 months in the hospital.   One leg and hip suffered permanent damage. He will probably always   need a cane and walk with a limp. He also has limited mobility in his   right arm and shoulder and cannot lift anything heavy.

Hector grew up in a family with a construction business. He has been   working in construction since high school. Social work at the rehab   hospital referred Hector to counseling because he is not adjusting   well to his injuries. He is very depressed and angry because he cannot   continue to work in his chosen occupation. Hector says, “What   use am I now? I am the man in the family. I should be strong. I need   to support the family. I don’t want my wife to work. I   don’t know what I am going to do to make a living.”

Hector still experiences severe pain in his shoulder and his leg. He   spends a lot of time watching TV and drinking. At this point, he is   not looking for work. His family has reached out to him but he avoids   interaction with his siblings and his parents because they remind him   of what he no longer can do. He feels shame when he is around family   members because of his disability. His relationship with his wife is   tense because he is often angry and withdrawn.

You are meeting with Hector for the first time and want to get the story.

As we meet with a new client we develop some hypotheses to   explore, as well as listening to what the client says about himself.

Write a 750-1,000-word paper addressing the following:

  1. What are some of primary issues that Hector is   addressing?
  2. What are some of Hector’s feelings?
  3. What are Hector’s behaviors and how are these impacting his adjustment?
  4. How might Hector’s cultural heritage     be impacting his adjustment to his injury?
  5. What are some     beliefs that may be impacting Hector’s adjustment?
  6. How might Hector’s family background be impacting his   adjustment?
  7. What might be some issues that will need to be     addressed in counseling?
  8. What are the stages of change the     counselor will help Hector through? Provide a brief definition     of each stage.
  9. What steps can a counselor take to help     Hector explore his problems?
  10. Consider the following     counselor skills: eye contact, closed and open-ended questions,     paraphrasing and summarizing, reflection, body language, tone,     listening, empathy, genuineness, unconditional positive regard,     interpretation, tracking, reflecting emotion, active presence,     structuring sessions, encouragement, questioning and clarifying,     counselor self-awareness, tolerating intensity, validating,     challenging, multicultural awareness/acceptance, probing and     questioning, posture. Pick one skill and discuss how a counselor     should use this in their sessions with Hector.

Include at three scholarly references in your paper. At least two   resources should identify issues that need to be addressed when you   are working with someone who is being rehabilitated from a serious injury.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA   Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks this section of the workbook has when working with diverse populations of athletes. In your evaluation, you can consider both your initial population and your diverse population.

  1. Theoretical Analysis and Application of Workbook

  1. By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:
  1. Competency 1: Apply psychological theories to explain and improve sport performance.
  • Competency 3: Address the unique needs of diverse participants and groups in sport to customize working models that fit specific populations.
  • Competency 4: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for members of the psychological professions.
  1. Assignment Preparation

  2. One excellent resource available in this course is the Premier Sport Psychology Mental Training System workbook. It gives many hands-on strategies to use with athletes. By examining the theoretical framework of a section from the workbook, you will be better able to apply the strategies to your professional life. In addition to exploring the theoretical background of strategies, it is important to work through the book as an athlete would. This enables you to account for variations that need to be made concerning diversity in athletes. It also allows you to evaluate the strategy as a whole for strengths and weaknesses you may not otherwise have seen.
  3. Prior to beginning this assignment, complete one section of the Premier Sport Psychology Mental Training System workbook from the perspective of an athlete.
  4. Select a section from the workbook. You may choose the “Warm Up,” “Emotions and Body Reactions,” or “Performance” section.
  • Work through the section as if you were an athlete. You will compose a written presentation evaluating the exercises in that specific section.
  1. Assignment Instructions

    1. Analyze the theories that support your chosen section of the workbook.
    • A section could be based on one or many theories from sport psychology. Analyze how well various theories align with the workbook.
    • Point out places where the workbook deviates from the theories. Suggest potential reasons for any deviation.
  2. Apply the selected section of the workbook to a sport with which you are familiar. When applying the workbook, begin with a description of relevant details about the sport (gender, level, et cetera). After applying the workbook to the sport, analyze how it could enhance performance for athletes.
  3. Apply the same section of the workbook to a new, diverse population. When applying the workbook, be sure to distinguish this population from your initial population. Compare and contrast the use and effectiveness of the section of the workbook for both populations.
  4. Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks this section of the workbook has when working with diverse populations of athletes. In your evaluation, you can consider both your initial population and your diverse population.
  5. Throughout your paper, be sure you are supporting your analysis and evaluations with peer-reviewed literature.
  6. Submission Requirements

  7. Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to APA (6th Edition) style and formatting.
  • Length: 4–6 double-spaced, typed pages, in addition to a title page.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

What type of research method was used (e.g., description of subjects, what materials were used, and procedures). Please do this for two studies (you do not need to do it for every study if there are 3 or more, but try to pick studies you think were important for the overall journal article).

Instructions for Writing your Reaction Papers

Each paper you select to write about should be one of the journal papers that are being read for the course (see the General Course Outline below for a list of papers). It should be submitted at the beginning of class the day the reading is due. Once you have chosen and carefully read an article from one of the above journals, write a 2 page paper (double-spaced, with one-inch margins, 12 point font Times New Roman) answering the following questions about the described experiment(s). Papers should be two FULL pages in length (you may use a third page if necessary). The first page should be focused on summarizing the article, demonstrating full understanding of the content (see items 1-4 below). The second page should be focused on your reaction or response to the paper (see items 5-7 below). Credit will be awarded based on the content and writing of the papers, so be sure to answer the questions to the best of your ability. Again, you will need to write four reaction papers based on the journal articles (NOT the book readings, NOT the Nisbett chapter, and NOT the Busch, Milrod, & Sandberg (2009) reading).

  1. What is the purpose of the research? According to the article, what background research had been conducted in this area? What are the hypotheses?
  2. What type of research method was used (e.g., description of subjects, what materials were used, and procedures). Please do this for two studies (you do not need to do it for every study if there are 3 or more, but try to pick studies you think were important for the overall journal article).
  3. Identify the independent variable(s) & dependent variable(s)
  4. What were the main results? How do the results of the current studies support and extend the literature reviewed in the introduction?
  5. How does the research relate to topics that (a) you’ve learned in your course OR (b) apply to your everyday life experiences (be specific)?
  6. What critiques do you have about the article? Were there any problems with the design of the studies? What do you think they could have done better? Did the researchers address them? (Try to go beyond what the researchers say in the article! Not surprisingly, researchers do not always point out all the flaws in their own research.) What ethical issues did the researchers confront? How did they address them?

7.     What experimental question did this article raise for you? That is, if you were going to conduct an experiment on the topic of this article using it as background information, what question would you want to explore? Briefly describe how you would explore your question experimentally. Why would your experiment be important?
