Topic:
The online lectures and McMinn suggested some “cautions” or possible negative
impacts when using prayer and Scripture in counseling. While suggesting these
cautions in Christian counseling may appear superfluous, consider the most important
therapeutic uses of Scripture and prayer in counseling by indicating how you would
address treatment in the case below. Be aware that the case is very similar to an actual
case encountered by one of our professors in his private practice. Make sure to
adequately integrate class materials as you thoughtfully consider your approach.
Case Study:
Mary is a 28-year-old young woman. She was referred for counseling as part of her
discharge plan from a local psychiatric facility to which she was admitted as a result of a
non-fatal suicide attempt. She was diagnosed with major depression. There was also
suspicion that she might have Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Mary’s father
sexually molested her throughout her childhood. He was a pastor during the daytime
and a member of the occult at night. While raping Mary, her father would often quote
from the Bible; for example, he would use the 5th Commandment and tell her to: “Honor
your father and mother” (Exodus 20:12). At one point, Mary became pregnant by her
father who then made her sacrifice her child on an altar during a satanic ritual. Mary
was forced to watch this sacrifice. Her father is currently serving a life sentence in
prison. Mary grew up in the church. She reads her Bible regularly. However, she
questions why God would allow her father to do what he did to her. During counseling,
she told the therapist that she was still a believer, but that there was a great distance
between her and God.

Explain how you would apply each of the following eight steps of the ethical decision-making model from Chapter 1 in Ethical Practice in Forensic Psychology: A Systematic Model for Decision Making to your selected boundary violation:

Ethical dilemmas are those situations in which most, if not all, proposed actions appear to violate one or more ethical guidelines. For example, a forensic psychology researcher proposes some degree of participant deception about the objectives of a study in order to decrease the likelihood that knowing the exact objective of the study will affect the participants’ behavior during the study. This is a dilemma because use of deception during research is not allowed by the code of ethics, but if some amount of deception is not used, the results of the study will have questionable value.

In another example, a forensic psychology clinical professional who is hired by a defense attorney to evaluate the defendant discovers information about the defendant that will facilitate the prosecutor’s case. This is a dilemma because the code of ethics requires forensic psychology professionals to be truthful and act with integrity, but doing so may actually hamper the defense attorney’s case.

Forensic psychology is often focused on challenging issues and tasks, and encountering an ethical dilemma can more typically be the rule rather than the exception. Forensic psychology professionals need to have an acceptable way of resolving ethical dilemmas. An ethical decision-making model offers a way to better articulate the critical issues during an ethical dilemma, identify different courses of action to resolve the dilemma, and weigh the benefits and risks of these actions in order to arrive at a possible solution. Although application of an ethical decision-making model does not guarantee immunity against being disciplined for an ethical violation, its use can help mitigate negative consequences when potential ethical violations are being investigated.

Post by Day 3 a response to the following:

·  Identify the boundary violation you have chosen from the list on page 364 in the article “When Boundaries Are Broken: Inmate Perceptions of Correctional Staff Boundary Violations.”

·  Describe the relevant ethical guideline(s) that pertain to the boundary violation.

·  Explain how you would apply each of the following eight steps of the ethical decision-making model from Chapter 1 in Ethical Practice in Forensic Psychology: A Systematic Model for Decision Making to your selected boundary violation:

1.  Identify the Problem

2.  Consider the Significance of the Context and Setting

3.  Identify and Use Ethical and Legal Resources

4.  Consider Personal Beliefs and Values

5.  Develop Possible Solutions to the Problem

6.  Consider the Potential Consequences of Various Solutions

7.  Choose and Implement a Course of Action

8.  Assess the Outcome and Implement Changes as Needed

Use the University Library to investigate the claim. What does the published literature say about the issue you are investigating?

Consider the following: Many products, diets, and services are marketed to parents as beneficial to infant or toddler development. In order to increase sales to parents and caretakers, some companies use marketing strategies that make exaggerated, unfounded, or unrealistic claims about the effects of their product(s) on child development.

Select one claim that you suspect to be exaggerated or false (your research may in fact show the claim has validity). Describe in detail what the advertised product, diet, or service is supposed to do. Some examples include:

  • Educational videos related to language development
  • Effects of classical music on cognitive development
  • Benefits of soy diet or organic food diet on physical and cognitive development
  • Service promising to teach your 18-month-old how to read
  • Any other claim made by a manufacturer or service provider, aimed at enhancing infant or toddler development

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper addressing the following:

  • What area or areas of development does the product, diet, or service claim to enhance?
  • Use the University Library to investigate the claim. What does the published literature say about the issue you are investigating? What does the research reveal about how to promote healthy development in this area? What does this reveal about the necessity and actual benefits of the product, diet, or service?
  • Is there any evidence to support the claim? Why or why not?
  • Imagine that a licensed psychologist in your state publically endorsed a product with no empirical evidence supporting its claims.  It was later discovered that the psychologist was receiving a percentage of money from the sale of the product to parents.  Is this a violation of the APA Code of Ethics?  Explain.  Be sure to cite the appropriate section or sections of the Code in your response.

Investigate the claim using your textbook and a minimum of four additional scholarly sources (such as peer reviewed journal articles).

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Note: You may not find a peer-reviewed journal article on a specific product, diet, or service. However, you will most likely be able to find peer-reviewed journal articles on the general issue that you are investigating. For example, if you are investigating educational videos that claim that cognitive skills in infancy are enhanced by using a particular approach or method, you can then review and evaluate studies that focus on enhancing cognitive skills in infancy. Review the evidence for and against the use of specific techniques and summarize your findings.

What is the independent variable(s) for study two? Make sure you tell me how many IVs there are and how many levels there are for each IV

In Part One, I want you to answer the following:

1. What is the hypothesis for study one? Please give me both the null and alternative hypotheses when you answer this question

2. What is the independent variable(s) for study one? Make sure you tell me how many IVs there are and how many levels there are for each IV

3. What is the dependent variable(s) for study one? Note: there are several of these, so focus on the ones the author analyzed.

4. What did they find in study one? Give the general outcome

5. What is the hypothesis for study two? Please give me both the null and alternative hypotheses when you answer this question

6. What is the independent variable(s) for study two? Make sure you tell me how many IVs there are and how many levels there are for each IV

7. What is the dependent variable(s) for study two? Note: there are several of these, so focus on the ones the author analyzed.

8. What did they find in study two? Give the general outcome

9. I want you to review the references and spot the reference(s) that is (are) not in APA format and rewrite it for me according to APA rules. Note: there may be as few as zero and as many as ten incorrect references, so make sure to look at them all!

In Part Two:

Write an abstract for the paper! This should be fairly easy, as you can paraphrase the information from Part One. However, this time you need to write it in one short paragraph (150 to 200 word maximum!). Note: there are two studies, and you have to mention both. Yes, this is tough, but authors often summarize (in the same short abstract) papers that they wrote that may include six or seven different studies! My suggestion is to find the overlap between both studies and discuss both simultaneously. For example, “Both studies looked at X, but study two also examined Y.” Make sure your abstract starts at the top of its own page (it should be all on its own). Your abstract should include the following:

1. Include the word “Abstract” at the top of your abstract

2. Identify the general problem or research question (the hypotheses) for both studies.

3. Note the participants for both studies

4. Note the IVs and DVs for the studies

5. Note the findings for both studies

6. Note the overall conclusions / implications of the two studies

7. Please include keywords for the study (at least 5 keywords or phrases – these are not included in the total word count)
