Discussion Description: Students will watch three TED presentation videos that address tricks, myths, and common beliefs, which often have a significant impact on the lives of willing consumers. A goal of this discussion is to teach students to become more effective critical thinkers, and to better understand how research methods can address challenging and often misrepresented issues.

Discussion Instruction:

1. Watch the following TED presentation videos:

The Magic of the Placebo (Eric Mead)

Homeopathy, Quackery, and Fraud (James Randi)

 

2. In the first paragraph of the discussion post, students should describe what they found the most intellectually intriguing and perhaps even surprising about the videos.

3. In the next section of the discussion post, student should try their best to test a concept addressed in one of the videos using the following steps:

a. create a research question related to one of the topics the TED speakers addressed.

b. explain what your independent and dependent variable would be.

c. explain what extraneous variables could impact the study.

4. When responding to students this week, contribute to their research design by critically analyzing it and offering your advice.

The Job Redesign and Workplace Rewards Assessment is a two-part project that asks you to assess the current state of your workplace environment in regard to how it motivates—or fails to motivate—employees to affect increased job satisfaction and workplace productivity.

Part One:

Prepare a 1,750- to 2,100-word assessment focusing on a selected job or department in your company in regard to the system of goal-setting, performance evaluation, and workplace rewards that impact productivity, both positively and negatively,and job satisfaction, as related to the selected job or department. Address the following:

·Identify the current major components, tasks, or responsibilities of the selected position. Does the job currently allow any self-management or sense of choice? Does the position cultivate a sense of intrinsic motivation?

·Briefly discuss current company-wide rewards, such as bonus plans or profit-sharing, and one-to-one rewards, such praise or recognition. Examine and evaluate if these rewards are effective in motivating behavior for this position.

·Identify how goals are used at your company with regardto the selected position. Be sure to consider what kinds of goals are set, how the goals are set, and if the goal system is effective for this position.

Part Two:

Prepare a 7- to 10-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation based on the evaluation conducted in Part One. Address the various ways a selected position or job could be redesignedto increase job satisfaction and productivity. The proposed modification can be made to the selected position or department itself or to the company’s broader system of goal-setting, performance evaluation, and workplace rewards. Be sure to include the following:

·Explore the various job redesign approaches to revise the selected position.

·Describe the major components, tasks, or responsibilities of the selected position after it has been redesigned.

·What recommendations would you make to improve your company’s reward system with regard to this position?

·What recommendations would you make to improve the goal system to increase productivity and job satisfaction for this redesigned position?

·Recommend an implementation plan for bringing the redesigned position into the organization. Consider factors that might impact the intrinsic or extrinsic motivation of an employee.

What is gatekeeping in the world of psychology?  Do you believe that psychologists should have the responsibility of being gatekeepers to new and existing practitioners?  Why or why not?

1.There is another code that protects student information.  Under the Education Code there is something called FERPA.  It is HIPAA for students.  All of your student information is p rotected under this law, so it is good to know about.  If you want, more information on FERPA there is an overview at https://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/pdf/ferparegs.pdf that you can access.  Any psychologist working as a teacher or counselor in an educational setting, therefore, has TWO guidelines they must abide by (APA Code of Ethics and FERPA).  Do you see that there may be a time that these could impact the job negatively?

2. A student in a professional training becomes attracted to an employee at a counselor at one of the practicum sites to which they have been assigned. Later, due to a routine staffing reassignment, the counselor is asked to assume the role of practicum supervisor for the student. What are the student and counselor obligated to do according to the APA Ethics Code? Do you agree or disagree with these restrictions?  Why?

3.Many of you are at the point in your program and getting ready to work on your dissertation proposal. This proposal needs to get IRB approval in most cases.  What are the tips that are presented in the chapter to help increase your chances of getting approval for a study?  How will you utilize these tips in getting ready for the IRB?

4.A student applies for employment with an agency and identifies a previous professor as a reference. Inadvertently, during the background check, the professor discloses student information. What is the ethical course of action for the professor?

5.What is gatekeeping in the world of psychology?  Do you believe that psychologists should have the responsibility of being gatekeepers to new and existing practitioners?  Why or why not?

6. What Code of Ethics principles do nurses and psychologists have in common?  Why do you think this is?  What areas of common practice can you identify between the two professions?6.

Discussion for Unit Seven – Chapters 13 and 14 Chapter 13 – Personality Here are some questions to use as a starting point for discussion.  Please feel free to discuss any other material that you feel is relevant and interests you.  In addition, respond to, at least, one or two posts from other students.

1.  What do you think of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory?  Although he was a maverick and leader in describing personality, his theory has been criticized by today’s standards.  Discuss the pros and cons of his theory and give examples to support your point of view.

2.  Discuss the Five-Factor Model of personality, and how you think it applies to you and your real-life choices and behaviors, such as mate preferences and career endeavors.

3.  If you were a personality psychologist, which assessment(s) do you think would appeal to you the most?  Discuss the reasons why, and how you would use them in your work, either in research and/or therapy.

Chapter 14 – Psychological Disorders

1.  Our textbook mentions some of the common myths concerning mental illness.  What are your opinions about these myths?

2.  In general, people in creative professions have been found to be no more likely to suffer from psychological disorders than people with other career endeavors.  The exception is bipolar disorder.  Discuss why you think bipolar disorder has been found to be more common in scientists, artists and authors.

3.  Discuss some of the gender and/or cultural differences in the field of mental health.  Why do you think they exist?  What is the distinction between culture-general and culture-bound symptoms of psychological disorders? Apply it to your discussion.

4.  A recent report from the New York City Health Department indicates that mental illness is far more prevalent than people realize.  One in five adult New Yorkers experience a mental health disorder in any given year.  Major depressive disorder is the single most common source of disability in NYC.  Why do you think this is the case in NYC?  They say new programs will be available in the near future.  What do you think they will be, and how do you think they will treat New Yorkers with mental health problems?
