Differentiating Public and Private Organizations

CheckPoint: Differentiating Public and Private Organizations
Ch. 1 (pp. 12, 14, and 15) in the text briefly discusses the differences between public and
private organizations in the health and human services industry and their effect on
communities. For example, the trend of privatization is a controversial issue for many
communities. Those who oppose privatization include government employees and public
employees who have joined unions to lobby for better benefits. This is one example of how
health and human services workers attempt to influence government regulations and social
policies. However, many private companies are counteracting the unions by hiring nonunion
workers at lower salaries than those of union workers.
Ch. 7 explores lobbying and social policies in more depth, but you may also refer to the
following Web sites for further research on social policies to complete this CheckPoint: the

• Follow the steps below to complete this CheckPoint (provide your response in
approximately 200 to 300 words):
o Describe a social policy that may affect your future position as a human services
worker.
Compare and contrast how a public versus a private organization might address
this policy differently. Include an explanation of how the delivery system of a
public organization would be different than that of a private organization. For
example, what would be some differences between a state-funded child
placement agency and a private adoption agency in the way they deliver their
adoption services?
o Consider how you could influence this policy to meet your clients’ needs. If you
work for a government organization, you may not be able to lobby, but what other
ways could you advocate for your client population?

Information technology allows allows health care providers to collect, store, retrieve,
and transfer information electronically. Similar terms can be used to define different products, and the exact functions of a system will depend on the specifics of its implementation in a given setting.  For example, IT can be used for entering changes in medication and communicating to other physicians medical history of the patient. It can also be used for billing, bar codes for prescription, security system and even for patient registration. Organization would find IT very useful to find strategies to improve quality care.

IT has its disadvantages, for a sophisticated system it can be expensive to own. Organization need to make sure they generate enough revenue to operate the system. Let’s not forget technology is for ever advancing so they will be upgrades and time to adapt to the system. While adapting to the new way of working there will be technical difficulties and medical facilities do not have the downtime. Another big issue is security, there is the scare of information being leaked to the public and allow hackers easy access to the information. Just like anything that helps a business to succeed there are disadvantages and advantages and the organization need to have a plan for it.

Explain the pros and cons of the politics- administration dichotomy as espoused by Woodrow Wilson

Explain the pros and cons of the politics- administration dichotomy as espoused by Woodrow Wilson
The disadvantage to this is government can implement laws without votes. An example, the government bailing out big businesses when they dwindle their funds and are going bankrupt. It is US policy to bailout the biggest American companies responsible for transportation-airliners, petrol companies, etc-from failure through subsidies and low-interest loans. But some emergency type bailouts are controversial. I see it as away to pass the buck sort of speak to the taxpayers. The law that gets passed as to how they get bailed out does not come from the people. It promotes centralized bureaucracy because it allows the government powers to choose the terms of the bailout. Mismanagement caused by the companies should not be a reason for a bailout. The Chrysler Corporation has been bailed out by the government twice. Certain ailments should be put in place to protect Americans from this when companies are at risk and people should have a say on who and why on the bailouts.
HTML Editor2. Why is the issue of illegal immigration a good example of the intergovernmental relations mess in the US
The issue of illegal imigration is a good example because this involves jobs and money.
Right wing scared cats think: “very little. And a major cause of unemployment is that the jobs are not there because employers know that they can pay them minimum wage and since they are in the us illegal they cant even ask for a raise for fear of loosing there jobs.people Wake up remove illegal people from usa stop giving other countries our tax dollars and stop spending money on things that are not necessary. There are over 300 million people in the US and over 36 million people here Illegal.Thats a major problem for Unemployment. Also remove any congressman or woman that does not address these issues to fix them.”
Widespread xenophobia was one of the causes of the jewish persecution and holocaust but xenophobes like the author above probably think that history lesson does not apply to him.
