In 2019 the Federal Communications Commission estimated that more than 21 million people in the United States don’t have that reliable internet access (pewtrusts.org). That includes nearly 3 in 10 people who live in such rural places as the outreaches of Maine and Indiana, as well as 2 percent of those living in cities. Research shows that 40 percent of schools lack broadband, as do 60 percent of healthcare facilities outside metropolitan areas (pewtrusts.org). When thinking about this issue and the principles of social justice, I immediately think about the issue of access. Yes, internet access is technically available for everyone, but as we become reliable on technology and online access, it is clear that there is a social divide that makes it clear that this is not available to every citizen. For students, their education is affected and it puts them at the very common disadvantage that always seems to happen no matter what is addressed and what is fixed. When it comes to healthcare facilities’ lack of access, this mainly affects the citizens in need of care, that they will not have access to said care. I always find remedies extremely difficult for these situations. The main reason is because when we find remedies to injustice, society finds new ways to go back to those injustices. Retrieved April 07, 2021, from 2) (Julia Sterling’s) The social issue I chose to address is the pattern of anti-Asian violence and hate crimes, especially in New York City. There has been an increase in instances of violent acts directed towards people of Asian descent including stabbings, shootings, robberies and other types of attacks. This uptick in hate crimes has been attributed to COVID-19 and the argument that the virus originated in China; although it can be argued that the racism issues existed long before the pandemic. In my opinion, these events go against basic human rights. In other words, everyone has the right to feel safe from physical and verbal attacks solely due to their race. Furthermore, I would argue that the way New York City has handled these events also violates equity principles. The attackers have no been charged with hate crimes, with prosecutors saying that a hate crime is harder to prove against an Asian victim than one who is African American or Jewish. This implies that Asian victims don’t deserve equal protection or justice under the current laws. Unfortunately, there may not be many solutions to this problem. Ignorance is a hard enemy to fight; however, the implementation of punishments that are equal to those of other hate crimes may deter some individuals from committing these atrocious ac‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ts.
