I would like to focus on the social and quite personal topic of motivation and procrastination. This is a topic that has fascinated yet plagued me for years. I would target school-aged children between 6-17. This is a very malleable and impressionable time within the development of any person. Although I haven’t had the chance to fully conceptualize an intervention, I will do my best to express what it might look like. In targeting middle school to high school aged student, the intervention will consist of counselling to target performance anxiety and the fear of failure. More specifically, the intention is to aide students to fight their fear of failure that may be rooted in parental pressures by teaching a study/workflow framework using aspects of our psychological toolkit including nudges and WISE interventions, among others. This would be a quasi-experimental approach to the study with a comparison of schools involved in the intervention and without. The intervention will also utilize qualitative surveys to understand perceived anxieties. Goal: Identify a societal problem (a problem that affects either individuals or communities/society) or an issue that could be improved Design an intervention, program, or campaign that is aimed at changing the beliefs or behaviour of a target group. You could focus on reducing some kind of negative behaviour or outcome or promoting more of a positive behaviour or outcome, using theories, concepts and methods drawn from applied social psychology. Task: Using your knowledge of social psychological theories and the principles of persuasion that you have learned in this class, you will design a Public Service Announcement or other kind of intervention that is targeted at a specific audience (e.g., Laurier Students, Canadians, high school students, people on Instagram or twitter). You will not DO the intervention, it is a proposal only. Therefore your proposal can be as ambitious as you like – imagine you do have the budget, resources and time needed to do the intervention you want to do! You should consider however whether your intervention would be feasible (would it actually be possible to do what you propose if you had the resources) and whether it is ethical (and if there are ethical concerns how you could alleviate the risks). Your written intervention proposal will include a few components: Introduction (1 para) Literature review (1-2 pages): Introduce the problem/issue from a social psychological perspective (why, psychologically, does this problem come about? What helps explain it psychologically?) Introduce the theory/research behind the intervention, discuss the mechanism if applicable Hypotheses (1 para): what is your IV and IV and what effect do you expect (state clearly, directional effects) Method (1-3 pages, may have appendix): Participants: Who will you target and why? Materials: What will your intervention involve? A specific, detailed description of the social psychological techniques used in your intervention Research Design & Procedure: A description of how you might evaluate your intervention (did it have its intended effects?) Expected Results (1 para): Can be brief, may include a figure or table of expected pattern. Should state exactly pattern using the DV you plan to measure Discussion (up to 1 page): Implications of the research, and a consideration of the strengths and limitations of your proposed intervention.
