What two obstacles confront vulnerable/underserved populations when they attempt to obtain quality health care Healthy People assigned focus area(e.g., a prevention program, screening program, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation)?

Application: Access to Quality Health Care for Vulnerable PopulationsAccess to quality health care for disparate populations is a critical challenge for today’s health care organizations and for the health care system as a whole. In this Application Assignment, you will describe the advantages and challenges facing the health care system in providing equal access to quality health care.

To prepare for this Application Assignment, consider how health care is delivered to populations who are sometimes affected by theHealthy People assigned focus area you were previously assigned.

To complete this Application Assignment, write a 2- to 3-page paper (essay style) that addresses the following:

  • What two obstacles confront vulnerable/underserved populations when they attempt to obtain quality health care Healthy People assigned focus area(e.g., a prevention program, screening program, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation)? Be specific.
  • Name and describe two intervention programs that have addressed these obstacles (e.g., prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation). You can find examples of these on the internet or by searching the library databases (CINAHL). Try searching with your Healthy People area (i.e. obestiy; heart disease) as a key term as well as the word “intervention” or “program”). You may also try looking at professional organizations that address that health issue. For example, the American Diabetes Association sponsors a program called “Project Power” which addresses diabetes type 2 among African Americans—specifically for church settings.

In your paper, summarize the programs by including the following:

  • The name of the program
  • The type of program (hospital based; for churches; online program, etc.)
  • Who has implemented the program (researchers, professional group, university, state, etc.) and where was it implemented:
    • For example, training programs are sometimes offered by commercial businesses and programs or activities are sometimes sponsored by federal government or professional organizations.
  • The types of services the program provides
  • How the program has addressed disparities
  • The achievements of the program
  • Does it address the issue of culture? How so?
  • Is there any evidence that it has been successful?

Your written assignments must follow APA guidelines (6th edition). Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate. Refer to the Essential Guide to APA Style for Walden Students to ensure that your in-text citations and reference list are correct. Also, since this is one of your only applications, you may want to submit this to a Walden Writing Center tutor first as well as run it through Turnitin.com prior to submission.

Leadership and Ethics in Healthcare

Leadership and Ethics in Healthcare

Ethics Case Analysis

Read the Unit 4 Ethics Case and answer the questions associated with the scenario. At least two (2) peer-reviewed sources other than the textbook must be used to support your opinion. List and cite your references. Your analysis should be at least 2 pages in length, in addition to a title and a reference page. APA formatting is required.

Scenario

Two principles are often at odds when healthcare practitioners must deal with health issues: The autonomy of each patient and beneficence. Autonomy refers to the individual’s right to make his or her own decisions. Beneficence refers to the moral obligating to act in ways that promote the health and welfare of others. As stated in Merman’s Ethical Challenges in the Management of Health Information, “Beneficence and the closely allied principle of nonmaleficence (first do no harm) are among the primary justification supporting public policies that interfere with the autonomy of individuals.”

Ethics Issue:

Andre Speaker, a personal injury attorney flew via public transportation from Atlanta, Georgia to Paris to get married. Speaker was thought to have an extremely contagious and untreatable form of multidrug resistant tuberculosis. Upon Speaker’s return to the Universe State, the Centers for Disease Control used provision of the Public Health Service Act to involuntarily hospitalize and desolate him. Speaker’s diagnosis was later corrected. He had a treatable form of tuberculosis. At least nine individual who were passengers on the flights Speaker took later filed civil suits against him for knowingly exposing them to the disease.

  1. Thinking as health care practitioners, n your opinion should Mr. Speaker’s autonomy as a person have taken precedence over the CDC’s desire to enforce public health law? Explain you answer.

  2. In your opinion, did the CDC act ethically in involuntarily quarantine Mr. Speaker? Explain you answer.

  3. Support your answers with facts/sources of reference.

Health Promotion organizations, non-profits, and agencies

Application: Health Promotion organizations, non-profits, and agencies

our University provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they may transform society.

—The University Mission The university mission is a key component of the Walden experience, and throughout your program of study you will be asked to consider how you might apply what you have learned toward the “greater good” of your community.

The Application Assignment for this week is intended to focus on the mission and to encourage you to consider personal or community action you could take in order to affect meaningful change in the health of individuals in your community.

To prepare for this Application Assignment, locate at least four organizations that contribute to the health of your own community. For each, consider how you might participate in any of their activities—how you could make a difference personally. Examples of ways that you could personally foster a change in your community include:

  • Buying locally grown produce
  • Donating food to community organizations
  • Building homes for the underprivileged
  • Volunteering at an after-school program

To complete this Application Assignment, write a 1- to 2-page paper that includes the following:

  • A list of the four organizations you located. Describe the mission or purpose of each. (Some examples or organizations and non-profits are listed in the website area).
  • Select one of the organizations for which you might like to volunteer or make some kind of contribution. Then describe the type(s) of personal actions you could take, with the support of the organization, to contribute to your community. Explain why you chose these particular actions and how this involvement aligns with Walden’s mission.
  • If you are already involved in community service activities, name and describe the organization with which you work. Also explain how you contribute to the organization’s activities.

Note: The purpose of this Application is to encourage you to begin thinking about what you might do to contribute to your community. You are not required to volunteer or take part in any activities. The objective is to begin thinking about ways you could apply the Walden mission.

Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate. Refer to the Essential Guide to APA Style for Walden Students to ensure that your in-text citations and reference list are correct.

Required Resources

Media

  • Video: Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2009). Concepts of health promotion: Health promotion and prevention in practice.Baltimore, MD: Author.Note: The approximate length of this media piece is 18 minutes.

Dr. Beilenson begins this media program by describing the types of prevention that are normally used in maintaining health or avoiding disease. Dr. Jeffery Levi provides examples of successful interventions used by various community programs. The other scholars, Dr. Gibson, Dr. Perlman, and Dr. Shaughnessy, explain the concept of evidence-based methodologies and interventions. They discuss various aspects of the patient-practitioner relationship, including the need for practitioners to be sensitive to the cultural background and spiritual beliefs of their patient.

Identification through assessment means of the health issue/problem and how it has affected the target population

Presentation must be done via screencast, Jing or other audio/video program.

Must be a minimum of six slides (excluding the title and reference slides) and formatted according to APA style.

Must have a cover slide that includes:

Title of paper

Each team member’s name

Course name and number

Instructor’s name

Date submitted

Must include a succinct thesis statement/problem statement.

Must address the topic with critical thought.

Must use at least 2 scholarly sources to support your assessment

Use APA style as illustrated in the Ashford Writing Center to document all sources.

Must include a reference slide formatted according to APA style.

Must use at least four scholarly sources, two of which must be from the Ashford University Library, others should be obtained from appropriate epidemiological information.

Screencast I:

The Assessment must include epidemiological methods including, but not limited to the following items:

Descriptive information on the target population (e.g., age, gender, culture, ethnicity) and location (e.g., city, town, state).

Identification through assessment means of the health issue/problem and how it has affected the target population (information on impact could come from mortality and morbidity reports, academic research, etc. Avoid using online sources such as WebMD. Government sources are fine, but the Ashford Library’s journal collection is the best means to discover data on health impact.)

Risk factors as outlined by epidemiological means (risk factors include social and behavioral determinants within the community or among the population that contributes to or ameliorates this problem).

Other demographic information outlined by epidemiological assessment measures.

Explain how the two essential services that revolve around assessment are applied to this health problem: 1) Monitor Health and 2) Diagnose and Investigate. These two services ensure that a community’s health assessment is accurate.

Policy Development Actions

Describe what has been done in general to address the issue (e.g. resources, facilities, organizations). Locate scholarly sources from the Ashford University Library to help you address what has already been done to address the issue.

Describe what has been done specifically in the community/city/town/state your team is researching to address this issue (e.g., programs and interventions or the creation of organizations to address the issue).

Existing Policies. Analyze the policies that currently exist to resolve the problem. For example: seatbelts were required by car manufacturers to reduce injuries and deaths from car accidents.

Policy Development. Discuss new policies that should or could be developed to better address the issue. For example: some communities do not fluoridate their water systems and developing such a policy could help reduce dental caries.

Identify Stakeholders and potential facilitators. Are there leaders and/or organizations within this community that can be identified and assist with the policy development? Who are they and why would you specifically select them?

Explain how the three essential services that fall into the Policy Development category are applied to your health problem: 3) Inform, Educate and Empower; 4) Mobilize Community Partnerships; and 5) Develop Policies.
