Identify the pathophysiology of acute, chronic, and referred pain. Consider the similarities and differences between these three types of pain

The neurological system affects all parts and functions of the body through nerve stimulation. Nerves also control the sensation and perception of pain. While pain can be described in a variety of ways, it is essentially labeled according to its duration and source. As an advanced practice nurse evaluating a patient, you need to consider the following questions: Does the pain quickly come and go, or is it persistent and ongoing? Does the pain arise at the source of injury or in another location? In this Discussion, you compare three common types of pain—acute, chronic, and referred.

To Prepare

· Review this week’s media presentation on the neurological system, as well as Chapter 14 in the Huether andMcCance text.

· Identify the pathophysiology of acute, chronic, and referred pain. Consider the similarities and differences between these three types of pain.

· Select two of the following patient factors: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Reflect on how the factors you selected might impact the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prescription of treatment for acute, chronic, and referred pain.

Post a description of the pathophysiology of acute, chronic, and referred pain, including similarities and differences between them. Then, explain how the factors you selected might impact the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prescription of treatment for acute, chronic, and referred pain.

Required Readings

Huether, S. E., & McCance, K. L. (2017). Understanding pathophysiology (6th ed.). St. Louis, MO: Mosby.

  • Chapter 14, “Pain,      Temperature, Sleep, and Sensory Function”

This chapter covers the role of pain, sleep, stress, and the senses on body functions. It also explores alterations involving pain, sleep, stress, and the senses.

Instructor Requirements

As advanced practice nurses, we are scholars, nurse researchers and scientists. As such, please use Peer-Reviewed scholarly articles and websites designed for health professionals (not designed for patients) for your references. Students should be using the original citation in Up to Date and go to that literature as a reference. The following are examples (not all inclusive) of resources/websites deemed inadmissible for scholarly reference:

  1. Up      to Date (must use original articles from Up to Date as a resource)
  2. Wikipedia
  3. Cdc.gov-      non healthcare professionals section
  4. Webmd.com
  5. Mayoclinic.com

Provide a title slide (as indicated in the format requirements below), followed by a slide with an executive summary containing a brief statement of your proposal, as covered within Assignment 2.

Report Issue

In this assignment, you will condense information from Assignment 2 to create a PowerPoint presentation.

Faculty Note: If there is a hardship for any student in being able to secure a microphone to complete this assignment, allow the student to use the Notes section of PowerPoint to write a narrative of what he or she would say if actually presenting.

Create a seven to nine (7-9) slide PowerPoint Presentation in which you:

  1. Provide a title slide (as indicated in the format requirements below), followed by a slide with an executive summary containing a brief statement of your proposal, as covered within Assignment 2.
  2. Summarize your response to each of the criteria in Assignment 2—one (1) slide per criterion, for a total of six (6) slides.
  3. Provide a summary slide which addresses your key points from Assignment 2.
  4. Narrate each slide, using a microphone, indicating what you would say if you were actually presenting in front of an audience.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Format the PowerPoint presentation with headings on each slide and three to four (3-4) relevant graphics (photographs, graphs, clip art, etc.), ensuring that the presentation is visually appealing and readable from 18 feet away. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a title slide containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The title slide is not included in the required slide length.

Discuss the strengths and limitations of different health information exchange organizations and methods.

In this unit, you were introduced to functional EHR systems and began practicing using EHR software. For this assignment, you will complete an exercise using the Quippe software in the MyHealthProfessionsLab located in Blackboard, and then you will compose a reflection paper that details your experience.

First, use the instructions for “Exercise 3G: Another Cause of a Headache” on page 118 of your textbook to complete this exercise in the MyHealthProfessionsLab. Note: You do not have to complete Step 4 because you are not actually submitting the exercise itself.

After completing the exercise, write a reflection paper about your experience that applies what you have learned in this unit. In your reflection paper, be sure to include the following:

How was your overall experience using the software to document the patient encounter? Did you experience any issues while using the software?

Differentiate between the features and structure of Medcin software (used in this exercise) and SNOMED-CT. Which nomenclature do you feel would better serve patients?

Who owns the patient data entered into the EHR? What are your thoughts on this?

Discuss the strengths and limitations of different health information exchange organizations and methods.

Explain ICD-10-CM and CPT-4. How are these codes used in billing?

Describe how this exercise will affect or influence your future learning. What will you do differently next time? What worked well?

Your reflection paper must be at least two pages in length You are not required to use any outside resources, but if you choose to incorporate information from outside resources, including your textbook, you must cite and reference them in APA format.

Information about accessing the grading rubric for this assignment is provided below.

Select a patient, a family member, or a friend to interview. Be sure to focus on the interviewee’s experience as a patient, regardless of whom you choose to interview.

This assignment requires you to interview one person and requires an analysis of your interview experience.

Part I: Interview

Select a patient, a family member, or a friend to interview. Be sure to focus on the interviewee’s experience as a patient, regardless of whom you choose to interview.

Review The Joint Commission resource found in topic materials, which provides some guidelines for creating spiritual assessment tools for evaluating the spiritual needs of patients. Using this resource and any other guidelines/examples that you can find, create your own tool for assessing the spiritual needs of patients.

Your spiritual needs assessment survey must include a minimum of five questions that can be answered during the interview. During the interview, document the interviewee’s responses.

The transcript should include the questions asked and the answers provided. Be sure to record the responses during the interview by taking detailed notes. Omit specific names and other personal information through which the interviewee can be determined.

Part II: Analysis

Write a 500-750 word analysis of your interview experience. Be sure to exclude specific names and other personal information from the interview. Instead, provide demographics such as sex, age, ethnicity, and religion. Include the following in your response:

  1. What      went well?
  2. Were      there any barriers or challenges that inhibited your ability to complete      the assessment tool? How would you address these in the future or change      your assessment to better address these challenges?
  3. How      can this tool assist you in providing appropriate interventions to meet      the needs of your patient?
  4. Did      you discover that illness and stress amplified the spiritual concern and      needs of your interviewee? Explain your answer with examples.

Submit both the transcript of the interview and the analysis of your results. This should be submitted as one document. The interview transcript does not figure into the word count.

This benchmark assignment assesses the following competencies:

CONHCP Program Competencies for the RN-BSN:

5.2: Assess for the spiritual needs and provide appropriate interventions for individuals, families, and groups.

This assignment requires you do conduct a spiritual assessment interview. I have pasted the JCOH spiritual assessment information for you below. The Joint Commission does not require a specific assessment tool, but provides sample questions.

American Family Physician website recommends the HOPE spiritual assessment tool: http://www.aafp.org/afp/2001/0101/p81.html  (scroll down the page to find it).

Chaplains sometimes use the FACT spiritual assessment tool. I have attached an article describing three assessment tools, including FACT, for you to consider.

You are welcome to use any of these tools, or to use questions from the Joint Commission (see below). Please specify in your paper, which of the tools you used.

Also, please include the transcript of the interview in the paper, although it will NOT count toward the word count requirements.
