How might “groupthink” account for the real or alleged mistakes that were made?

1. Choose a major controversy event within our current day 2017 – 2018 for example, the 2016 presidential elections; the current political divide within our country;  or another example of your choosing. Drawing upon your knowledge and research of group decision-making processes, discuss the following:

a.How might “groupthink” account for the real or alleged mistakes that were made? That is, what symptoms of groupthink appeared to be present? Look for evidence of such things as group polarization, conformity pressures, self-censoring, mindguards, etc.

b.How could groupthink have been prevented? That is, what are some changes that could have been done in the decision-making process that might have led to better results?

2. Choose a major controversy event from the last 25 – 50 years, for example, the Bay of Pigs Invasion during President Kennedy’s era; Pearl Harbor during President Roosevelt’s era; the Vietnam War during President Johnson’s era; or another example of your choosing.

That is, what are some changes that could have been done in the decision making process that might have led to better results?

Key Difference – Group Polarization vs. Groupthink

Group polarization and groupthink are two terms that come in social psychology between which some difference can be identified. Group polarization refers to a situation where the attitudes or decisions of people in the group come out much stronger than in actuality. On the other hand, Groupthink refers to a condition in which members of a group arrive at conclusions based on the pressure from the group as they put their opinions and beliefs aside. The key difference between the two is that, in group polarization, the emphasis is on enhancing an opinion within a group but, in groupthink, the emphasis is on group unanimity.

Explain how your selected theoretical model aligns with your interests and career.

Intelligence: From Theory to Test

In this unit, you are introduced to a variety of theories of intelligence, including Spearman’s two-factor theory (1927), Cattell-Horn’s two-factor theory (1966), Luria’s information processing approach (1966), Cattell-Horn and Carroll’s CHC model (1997), and Carroll’s three- stratum theory (1997).

In your post:

  • Describe how these theories differ in regard to the ever-reversing role of general intellectual ability factor (g).
  • Explain how these theories are relied upon in each of the following current tests that you also read about in this unit. Please note that some of these tests may now rely on more than one theory, or a theory different than the original versions of the same test. Subsequently, you will need to address such multiple contributions and only for the versions listed below (for example, fifth edition).
    • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, fourth and fifth editions.
    • Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children, second edition.
    • Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales, fifth edition.
    • Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities, third or fourth editions.
  • Explain your thoughts regarding an intelligence test that has a dual theoretical basis, based on your readings and review of the theoretical influences on these tests. Explain your position by including consideration of validity.
  • Explain which theory of intelligence you find yourself most affiliated with in the context of your professional goals.
  • Explain how your selected theoretical model aligns with your interests and career.

Visionary Science Application Paper

This is a SMALL 1000-words paper, so don’t let the word “paper” mislead you. As long as you do it sufficiently, you will get 100% of the points. 50% for half done in quality/quantity. 0% for insufficient work. So, there is no need to worry about strict or critical evaluation of your writing. It will be worth 59 points. The goal is to offer you practice in not just LEARNING scientific psychology, but actually APPLYING said science in making the world a better place (unfortunately, many people learn a lot of great science in college but don’t apply much/any of it).

What to write about:

Your task is to pick a topic/concept from the course and design a real-life project you could possibly implement. Explain

  1. WHAT this psychological science idea is, and
  2. HOW you will use this idea to change the world, improve the quality of life for people, or even push the frontiers of scientific inquiry/application.
