  1. Read the case study details and refer to your textbook, and the DSM-5, as needed to support your understanding.

In your initial post,

  • Start by identifying the symptom or diagnosis you searched and the name of the case study you chose.
    • (e.g. Albert [borderline personality disorder with comorbid alcohol use])
  • Next, describe the patient’s symptoms and the available demographic and historical data.
    • If new terminology is introduced, be sure to explain to your peers what this entails.
  • Analyze the differences between the diagnosis of the person identified in your case study and a similar illness/diagnosis.
    • Access the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) and do a search to support your suggestions. (Be sure to cite.)
  • Discuss the available treatments for your case study.
  • Evaluate the health and social risks, as well as costs, of alcohol or substance use disorder.
  • What do you think about how our society handles this problem? Is there more we should be doing or is society too involved in this issue?
  • Finally, develop at least three recommendations for the patient/family for ongoing functioning (social, occupational, and academic, if applicable), associated with your chosen case study.

Post your initial response of 300 words or more by Day 3

GARY (BIPOLAR DISORDER)

CASE STUDY DETAILS Gary is a 19-year-old who withdrew from college after experiencing a manic

episode during which he was brought to the attention of the Campus Police (“I

took the responsibility to pull multiple fire alarms in my dorm to ensure that

they worked, given the life or death nature of fires”). He had changed his

major from engineering to philosophy and increasingly had reduced his sleep,

spending long hours engaging his friends in conversations about the nature of

reality. He had been convinced about the importance of his ideas, stating

frequently that he was more learned and advanced than all his professors. He

told others that he was on the verge of revolutionizing his new field, and he

grew increasingly irritable and intolerant of any who disagreed with him. He

also increased a number of high-risk behaviors – drinking and engaging in

sexual relations in a way that was unlike his previous history. At the present

time, he has returned home and his been placed on a mood stabilizer (after a

period of time on an antipsychotic), and his psychiatrist is requesting

adjunctive psychotherapy for his bipolar disorder. The patient’s parents are

somewhat shocked by the diagnosis, but they acknowledge that Gary had early

Personal Growth Paper

Personal Growth Paper Instructions:

Discuss your personal growth of your attitudes toward alcohol and drug use during the course of the semester. The paper should be between 3-4 pages, double-spaced with appropriate spelling, grammar and organization. It may include references if you feel a particular article or chapter impacted your views. Personal growth papers should clearly illustrate your understanding of addiction, your views of addiction, and reactions when you hear the words “alcoholic” or “addict.” What comes to your mind immediately when you hear these words? What do you envision that person to look like? What stereotypes did or do you still have or how have they changed?

This paper might challenge your stereotypes of persons with addictions. Demonstrate critical thinking regarding your feelings and how they may have changed by taking this class. Include your ideas of how you developed your views on addiction and your views of people who are addicted to substances and/or alcohol. Personal Assessment papers must be turned in to the instructor via Drop box.

Discuss the research method used in the journal article to study the condition.

Topic: Your sweetheart is of a different race and culture.  Your parents do not approve of the upcoming marriage.

Your task as a group is to prepare a 40 minute oral presentation. As a group you must divide tasks according to topic such that each member has a unique contribution to understanding the condition. Individual group members are responsible for presenting a 20 minute Power Point/Prezi (to be merged with the larger group presentation) that must include the following elements:

(1) Introduction of your unique segment of group topic.

(2) Brief contribution to the description and definition of the condition.

(3) Discuss at least one major theoretical approach to explaining and resolving the life span development situation (i. e., mental or developmental disorder, psychosocial change or trauma, or a moral dilemma).

(4) Share the research findings from one professional journal article, one national organization Website, one governmental agency, and one additional source to reference in the presentation. References must be done APA style.

(5) Discuss the research method used in the journal article to study the condition.

Other group member will cover:

(6) Discuss your individual recommendations that you believe will best resolve/alleviate this condition based on research and the ethics and values as expressed in the “standard of care” practiced in this community.

(7) Discuss the impact of this condition on the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development of those affected by this condition.

(8) Identify local community resources, and or national resources, such as phone numbers and contact information, and program details that are available to support an individual or family in your “lot in life” situation.

(9) Any additional information relevant to the topic for informational purposes (i.e., brief video clip, brochure, classroom demonstration) may be included.

· Your sweetheart is of a different race and culture. Your parents do not approve of the upcoming marriage.

My thoughts: Assuming you are white American and your sweetheart is of mixed race from Trinidad. Immigration can be a point that can cause concern for parents thinking this is a marriage of convenience… culture
