New York’s incarceration rates

Today, New York’s incarceration rates stand out internationally.
In the U.S., incarceration extends beyond prisons and local jails to include other systems of confinement. The U.S. and state incarceration rates in this graph include people held by other parts of the justice system (e.g., the juvenile justice system, so they may be slightly higher than the commonly reported incarceration rates that only include prisons and jails. Details on the data are available in States of Incarceration: The Global Context.
1. How would Michel Foucault explain the graph above depicting the U.S. rates of incarceration?

2. How does Pierre Bourdieu define habitus?

3. The Politico reporter in the documentary interviewed several law enforcement personnel who pointed out that the Charlottesville Police Department responded to the demonstration with strategies that were counter to standard police procedure. Using the construct of habitus, how would Bourdieu characterize this response?

5. How does Bourdieu define the elements of habitus and how does habitus create hierarchies?

6. Define human capital.

7. Define social capital.

8. Summarize in one paragraph the findings of the Lareau study on parental involvement in schools. In the second paragraph discuss the importance of social capital.

9. Bonilla-Silva relies on the use of interpretive repertory. What is interpretive repertory and what does the method reveal?

Senior Seminar in Child and Adolescent Development

General Description: One of the key ways that we now communicate information is via technology like Podcasting.
There are three parts of this course requirement. The first part is reviewing four podcasts from the list I have posted
below. For each individual podcast you are asked to provide a journal reflection (a total of four podcasts that you listen to
and reflect upon). Each podcast reflection is worth 2.5 points. The second part is to develop your own “Podcasting Plan”
that maps out how you would organize your own podcasting series (2-3 pages). This portion of the assignment is worth 10
points. The third part is scripting out one 15-minute episode of your podcast (or you can record a podcast episode as an
alternative, 13 points). Overall, this assignment will be 6-8 pages in length and is worth 35 points. Note: The podcast on
the list are podcast series, you only need to listen to four individual podcasts. You should submit your paper with an APA
title page and APA reference page (2 points).
Specific Description: There should be three sections to this project.
Section 1: Podcast Reflections
1. You are asked to choose four individual podcasts from the podcast series listed below (if you find another more
relevant series that you would like to utilize let me know). You must choose at least two different series from
which to choose (e.g., three podcast from 1 series, and one podcast from another series). See below for how to
listen to a podcast (if you have never done it before).
2. For each ‘journal’ reflection include the following: Name of the podcast, podcast creator, brief summary of the
podcast content, specific link to ChAD 195 course content (i.e., stated link to a specific course reading, textbook,
or course lecture), and some reflection about the link to course content (e.g., what does it mean for our
understanding of children’s development or poverty, or children’s health). Be specific as you describe the link
(not generic, but clear and understandable link).
3. This reflection should read like a journal entry in a journal full of reflections about child/adolescent development
and application to the real world. Journal entries should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs long.
4. If you are writing more than three pages for this part of the assignment, your reflections are too long.
5. Include citations and a reference page for your journal reflections.
Section 2: Podcasting Plan
1. You are asked to reflect on a podcasting series you would like to develop. This plan is your ‘map’ for your 3
episode podcast series (at least three episodes although you can include more).
2. In your plan, include a name for the series overall, and titles for the 3 episodes of your series.
3. Briefly describe the content for each of your episodes and the research from ChAD 195 that provides support for
each series (at least three peer-reviewed references that are linked to specific topics within the course or
child/adolescent development). For example, you could host a podcast series, “Helping Families with Children’s
Health.” One episode could be with a children’s health expert who outlines specific Bay Area resources that are
free that focus on providing quality health care to children ages 0-3. You would support this episode with research
that discusses the importance of children’s health or connecting families to resources.
4. For this portion of your assignment, you can utilize a table to be the map of your episodes (including the title,
questions you want to address, the content, invited guests, the specific target audience for the episode, and the
research support).
5. As a last part of your podcasting plan, describe what you think the value of using a podcast series to reach your
audience is. In other words, what is the advantage of a podcast series for your specific audience as opposed to
newspapers, social media, books, television series, webinars? Be specific here, your response should connect the
characteristics of your audience to the podcast medium.
Section 3: Podcasting Episode
1. You are asked to script out one episode (from the three you have proposed in your Podcasting Plan). This script
will delineate your theme, your specific subtopics (segments), segment length, questions that you plan to address,
and specific key points that you would like to cover within the episode.
2. Within the script be sure to emphasize the “story” you are trying to tell and identify the beginning, middle, and
end (i.e., note the transitions). You include the specific content that you will share (utilizing peer-reviewed
sources). This content should reflect a 15 minute (at least) podcast.
3. You can utilize a script template that you find online, but be sure to credit its’ source.
4. See below for some ‘tips’ on writing a podcast script.
5. As an alternative to a script, you can actually ‘record’ a 15 minute podcast of your actual episode.

The pros and cons of franchising.

Select a manufacturer or service organization then, using the SWOT factors on page 79 of your textbook, identify the competitive advantages that your
selected company exhibits. Be sure to support your conclusions.
Discuss the pros and cons of franchising. What are two examples of how a franchisor can negatively impact a franchisee? Do you think there are any ethical
implications?
Read Situation 2 on page 120 (Chapter 4) of your textbook. What risks do you think you would face if you were a successful manager in a large organization
who suddenly had an offer to go into business for yourself? Why do you think Treadwell decided to become a multi-brand franchisee instead of staying with
KFC?
Give four reasons for buying an existing business rather than creating a brand new one. Describe the process of evaluating an existing business. How
effective do you think these guidelines are?
