(Examples: bag, a bushel of fun, wait, I am working, when she arrived, etc.) Note that there are one-word sentences. Proceed to define what a sentence is. Explain the definition by enumerating what a sentence should have for it become a sentence. Have students give their own sentence examples and let them identify the subject, the verb, and whether or not the sentence can stand alone. Give the students a short quiz before the end of the hour for this topic.
