police brutality

The link I found that engaged in some action with the intention of addressing racial domination would be a video about the NFL. This protest took place on the football fields in various states. The majority of the football players would kneel during the National Anthem. This showed that they did not agree with the police brutality that was taking place. The racial brutality was against African Americans.

This protest was non violent and very peaceful. The main goal of this protest was to top perceived injustices within a political system. The fact that this protest was done over and over and across the country it showed hope. The protestors had hope that this would inflict a change. This is very important to keep in mind when speaking of a political protest.

This was not a traditional way of protesting. Typically the only time a football player (athlete) kneels is out of respect for something that has happened. The act of this was suppose to show unity through a team. Although the protest didn’t stop police brutality it drew attention to the heinous act.  Th link for the video is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQLtRgusgo0

Response to #2. dis. question:

The video I choose is of a German soccer team who is protesting racism by painting their faces black. In America, there would be total outrage behind something like this because of its relation to the old minstrel shows and early movies and how they portrayed black people. Someone seeing this video for the first time might also be offended. However, there is a very nice story behind the video which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e509DhT4Z0

A black member of the soccer team, who was a refugee, was racially insulted and brutally beaten, and the team took this chance to show their support for their teammate. The gesture was supposed to mean that if someone is against one of them, then they are against all of them. The meaning behind their blackface is different from the usual demeaning ones from the United States.

The first thing I saw in the team’s political protest is that they understood they have power. The entire team came together to show that they stood in solidarity unlike the one or two players who kneel for various professional sports games. They were also not afraid to break some rules to get their point across (Desmond, 2010, p. 537-539). In America, they would have been attacked by black and white people for defending their teammate.

During the Jim Crow era racial domination was legal and easy to see. According to the text, there was a clear enemy and a clear goal. Today, it is harder to see racial domination and color-blind racism helps to perpetuate it (Desmond, 2010, p. 513). Sadly, there is no clear and united language in existence for talking about racial domination; therefore, people have a hard time talking about race and understanding fellow members of society.
