Practicum Observation Journals- Create your Own

Read Classroom Instruction that Works in preparation for the practicum observation, and search the Internet for academic articles about research-based literacy strategies.

Throughout your practicum, observe the students in your class as they demonstrate different literacy traits. Identify them and discuss them as they inform the students’ overall learning.

Write a journal entry on each practicum observation identifying and evaluating the effectiveness of literacy strategies used by the instructors to support reading in the classroom.

Reference strategies from Classroom Instruction that Works and from your search for other research-based strategies.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing skill is expected.
A title page is required.

Complete practicum observation journal entries as required in Topics 4-6 and submit all the entries as part of the Benchmark Assignment.

Ensure that the classroom teacher has completed a Classroom Teacher
Evaluation Feedback Form, found in the practicum manual, for each observation.

Class and Student Literacy Profile

Initially, observe the class as a whole. Focus on the literacy behaviors you see and interpret their general effect on the learning taking place in the classroom. Consider how fluency, vocabulary skills, and comprehension strategiesare emphasized in the learning process, how the differences in interacting with expository and narrative text influences understanding, whether literature is used to motivate, and whether you see evidence of
critical literacy (higher-order thinking skills) at play in the classroom.

Select one student to observe more closely. Look at the student’s written work, listen to the student specifically in discussions, talk to the student about how reading and literacy are incorporated into the student’s life, etc.

Create a class/student profile of 1,250-1,500-words that describes both the class and your selected student in terms of literacy traits.

Address the considerations listed above and interpret what you saw as it relates to the overall literacy and learning process.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.

Submit the Class and Student Literacy Profile as part of the Benchmark Assignment.

Venn Diagram

Construct a Venn diagram that illustrates the literacy skills the student demonstrated at the onset of the lessons (into), those that intersected (through), and those that remain to be mastered (beyond). The time you spend with the student should facilitate this process through an investigation of the student’s prior knowledge and literacy experiences (into), a best practice activity to stimulate literacy growth (through), and an assessment of what
future literacy goals should be set. As you work with your student, consider, on an individual level, how fluency, vocabulary skills, and comprehension skills influence learning, how the differences in interacting with expository and narrative text affects this student’s understanding, whether literature motivates this student, and whether you see evidence of critical literacy in your student’s approach to text.

Write a 1,050 word proposal that includes: •Purpose of a Supplier Evaluation process

Your Supply Chain Manager has assigned you the responsibility of developing a new Supplier Evaluation process for your company. Your company has experienced an unfavorable trend in low productivity as a result of component availability, re-working of product, and increased inventory levels of nonconforming material.

Your company cannot seem to effectively measure supplier performance because it doesn’t know which metrics to implement that will drive the right changes.  To make matters even more challenging, your company is working to become ISO9001 certified. ISO9001:2008 requires supplier evaluation and data analyses, so this needs to be considered when developing the Supplier Evaluation process.  Identify the top ten supplier performance criteria that you want to use in the evaluation process.

Create a Supplier Evaluation Template that includes the key criteria data that you want to analyze.

Write a 1,050 word proposal that includes: •Purpose of a Supplier Evaluation process

•Example of template with evaluation criteria

•Implementation plan: include who is responsible for collecting data and how you will determine which suppliers will be measured.

•Supplier communication plan to inform selected suppliers of this new process

•Explain how data will be used to drive supplier performance improvements.

Format the paper according to APA standards.

When I observed the six continua of cultural tendencies and beliefs, I noticed that each belief there was a strong pull to one side except for one. I always wear my heart on my sleeve and care a lot about people’s feelings and opinions. Also, I always have felt that things happen for a reason and I completely believe in fate, however; I feel that people can determine their fate. So Internal and External locus of control were the only continua that I was in the middle. Due to my results, I hope it will make me a compassionate and understanding teacher but a teacher that believes that the students control their future!

Kajitanis 3 steps for introducing curriculum in the classroom is understanding what ethnicity is, how It is culture is formed and how to implement it in the classroom.Following these steps will educate me on what ethnicity is and how it is formed. Also, it will help me to understand just how I can ensure that I provide a culturally appropriate lesson and classroom. Ensuring that you get to know your student’s background and culture and ensuring I follow Kajitanis steps will make sure that will be able to differentiate my classroom appropriately. Providing a get to know you survey, a drawn picture of each student’s family and including diverse classroom activities will allow me to differentiate successfully. Each culture is different, and each child’s home life is different so each child may learn differently or have access to different materials. So what works for one child may be difficult for another based on their cultures or beliefs.

Take a moment to reflect on how your own culture influences your learning. How do you like to learn and how might culture influence this learning preference? Take a look at Figure 7.1 and share where you fall on the six continua of cultural tendencies and beliefs. Based on your results, how might it influence the way you teach?

I would like to think of myself as a bodily kinesthetic and interpersonal person. I say this because I have always been able to walk in any room and verbally connect with who was in that room. I understand a lot better when things are well put and spoken to me.

Referring to the figure 7.1 I believe I’m a fewer shared experience type of person. “People are individualistic” “Words carry meaning” “It is important to be explicit”

Understanding that cultural relevance is fundamental to the teacher and learner’s success I take a great interest in cultural competence (Sousa, D. A. & Tomlinson, C. A. (2011). This will influence the way I teach because of the diversity I’ll be introduced to. Apart of being effective when identifying with groups is knowing your background and the importance of it.

In Chapter 9, Kajitani (2013) describes three different ways to begin introducing a culturally relevant curriculum into your classroom.

Examine and describe these three different steps in your own words and consider how these steps can support your understanding of the various cultural backgrounds of your students.

Give a specific example of how you might differentiate content based on one’s culturally background.

Based on one’s cultural background I will differentiate by understanding what ethnicity is, how It’s culture is formed and how to implement it in the classroom.

Why is it especially important not to generalize learning style preferences among cultures?

It is important not to generalize learning styles because they can’t be subjected to every person in that culture. Not every African American is a like so that means that some learning preferences will be common and some wont (Sousa, D. A. & Tomlinson, C. A. 2011).

Paulina Case Scenario

Paulina is a 13-year-old student with a language impairment. In particular, she struggles with understanding expressive language (i.e., sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings completely). She has not received any disciplinary action this school year. Recently, Paulina and the bus driver exchanged words about Paulina’s seat on the bus. Paulina proceeded to call the bus driver several inappropriate names. Prior to this incident, Paulina had not exhibited any of these behaviors in her classroom or in any other school environment. Following the incident, Paulina’s parents received a note from the principal stating that Paulina would be suspended for 11 school days, that Paulina has been expelled from riding the school bus for the remainder of the school year, and that alternative transportation in the form of special transportation would be provided to Paulina at the end of this 11-day suspension for the remainder of the school year.

Paulina’s parents have requested that Paulina’s IEP team gather in order to complete a functional behavioral assessment, develop a behavioral intervention plan, and conduct a manifestation determination review. Further, they object to Paulina having special transportation. Paulina’s IEP indicates that she is to ride the “general education” bus.

Scenario adapted from materials created by the Virginia Department of Education.

Create a flowchart that clearly depicts the possible discipline paths following:

  • A manifestation determination that the misconduct was the result of Paulina’s disability.
  • A manifestation determination that the misconduct was not the result of Paulina’s disability.

Be sure to reference relevant statutes, regulations, and case decisions as appropriate.

Support your findings with a minimum of three scholarly resources.

In addition, include a 250-300-word analysis regarding any legal issues raised by the change in Paulina’s transportation.
