Discussion1: Working With and Advocating for Clients With Somatic Symptom Disorders

Clients who exhibit somatic symptom disorders are often disregarded and not taken seriously because the physical symptoms are difficult to measure. However, these clients are in distress and they need mental health attention along with medical care. Working with clients with any of the somatic symptom disorders highlights the need for a biopsychosocial approach to social work.

For this Assignment, read the Somatic Symptom Disorders criteria in the DSM-5. Then read the articles by Dimsdale, Patel, Xin, and Kleinman, and by Kirmayer and Sartorius.

• Post and Select one of the three major Somatic Symptom Disorders (F45.1 Somatic symptom disorder, F45.21 Illness Anxiety Disorder or, 300.11 Conversion Disorder), and provide an explanation for why you as a social worker might need to take a biopsychosocial approach to social work when working with clients who have the chosen somatic symptom disorder.

• Then explain why a multidisciplinary approach is necessary when working with clients who have this somatic symptom disorder.

• Finally, explain why advocacy would be an integral part of working with these clients.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Discussion2:

Using Power in Social Work Practice

Politics represents efforts by people in governmental and nongovernmental settings to secure their policy wishes by developing and using power resources.

—Bruce S. Jansson, Becoming an Effective Policy Advocate: From Policy Practice to Social Justice (8th ed.)

Social workers are in the business of empowering people. They are also often faced with power structures that are entrenched and difficult to navigate. Skillful policy practitioners recognize the many kinds of power resources that exist, thus expanding their options in specific situations. As a social worker, you will learn various strategies that can create and expand personal networks that might be useful in negotiating your policy practice within an agency. You want your power resources to be recognized as effective ways to get things done, not as coercion and force.

In this Discussion, you identify various kinds of power resources (including person-to-person, substantive, process, and procedural) that you can use to secure the adoption of a policy proposal.

To prepare: Review Chapter 10 in your text, focusing on Jansson’s categorization of types of power resources in the policy-enacting task.

• Post a description of how social workers use power resources in their social work practice and advocacy.

• Select a type of power resource you would use in your practice and advocacy.

• Describe the ethical issues or concerns in using the type of power resource you selected.

Be sure to support your post with specific references to this week’s resources. If you are using additional articles, be sure to provide full APA-formatted citations for your references.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

Identify the life stage he or she is in, along with the psychological crisis each is experiencing.

The purpose of this assignment is to use what you have learned about lifespan theories, models of resilience, and psychosocial development to assess how well individuals and families are functioning in relation to all three of these areas. To address realistic situations without violating personal rights to privacy, you will view the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, or one of the other approved films for this assignment, in order to provide a case scenario.

If you have not yet viewed the movie, you need to do so to complete this assignment. Each movie represents characters in multiple life stages. Identify three characters moving through a different life stage and focus on details that will make your analysis applicable to your specialization.

Directions

For this assignment, imagine you are a counselor working with each of these three characters. Now, conduct the following analysis for each character:

· Identify the life stage he or she is in, along with the psychological crisis each is experiencing.

· Apply psychosocial developmental theory to the situation presented, from the perspective of a counselor:

o Conceptualize your ideas for the developmental tasks of each character selected, grounding your conceptualization in your own area of specialization.

o Include a discussion of the character’s life and factors that might affect behaviors, including cultural and other influences related to the stage of development assessed. To the extent that it is relevant for each character, include an analysis of interrelationships among work, family, and other life roles. Include an analysis of the impact of cultural influences, as well. Refer to specific actions and words of the characters in the movie as evidence for your analysis.

o Support your ideas with specific lifespan theories discussed in this course, citing and referencing your sources.

From a clinical perspective, assess how these three characters function as a family unit:

· Examine their functioning in relation to a model of resilience appropriate to your specialization, and evaluate their challenges and strengths related to wellness and resilience. As each character transitions to his or her next developmental stage, how will the transition impact the functioning of the family unit?

· Support your ideas with appropriate sources on the model of resilience you chose.

Use the document Unit 8 Assignment Template (given in the resources) to prepare and submit your report. Do not include a synopsis of the movie in your paper. Instead, follow the template. Focus on the three selected characters, and the realities of their functioning as a family unit and transitioning within the family unit, as described in the template. Then, provide your assessment of how well they are functioning in relation to your choice of a model of wellness and resilience, as described in the template. Your summary, at the end of the template, should provide a brief, focused review of the key insights in your assessment.

Review the scoring guide given in the resources to make sure you understand how this assignment will be graded.

Other Requirements

Your paper must meet the following requirements:

· Resources: Cite and reference at least three resources from the professional literature that you use as the basis of your ideas related to life span theory and resilience models.
