Define case-control study (provide your source)

It is a Tuesday evening at 4:59pm and you are leaving the local health department where you serve as the lead epidemiologist. The phone rings, when you answer, it is the Health Services director at a local, residential college. The students arrived on Campus on Saturday, by today, several dozen students have reported to the college health clinic with nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea. The first student reported to the clinic at 8:15am, by 4:30, the clinic had seen 3 dozen cases. There are 3001 students at the college.

Question 2: What is the current attack rate of the disease? (show your work)

UPDATE: Wednesday, August 22nd 5pm

Since this afternoon, 75 additional students have reported ill to the clinic, an additional seven went to the local hospital due to advanced symptoms. In addition, you have learned that at least one parent, who was dropping their child off at the college, has reported to their local hospital with similar symptoms.

You call the local hospital to get information regarding the seven students who went there and learn that all seven were admitted and are being treated with fluids. The hospital tells you it has collected stool samples and sent them to the lab for analysis.

Question 5: Provide a case definition

Question 6: Provide an updated attack rate (show your work)

Question 8: Create an epi curve based on what you know at this point.

If you need additional assistance with how to create an epi curve, use this resource: https://www.cdc.gov/training/quicklearns/createepi/

Question 9: Does the shape of the epi curve indicate a point source outbreak or a propagated outbreak?

Question 10: Now that you know the agent involved (Staph), how will you identify the specific source of the outbreak?

Question 11: Provide an updated case definition based on what you now know.

UPDATE, Thursday, August 23rd, 1pm

You receive a complete list of the names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses for all 3,001 students at the college. After reviewing the data further, you notice that 58 of those that are sick, are freshmen. There are 307 incoming Freshmen.

Question 12: Other than the students, who else should you test/interview for possible exposure?

Question 13: Define case-control study (provide your source)

Question 14: Define cohort study (provide your source)

Question 15: would a case-control or cohort study be more appropriate for this outbreak? Explain your rationale.

Question 16: calculate the risk ratio for freshmen. (show your work)

UPDATE, Thursday, August 23rd, 3pm

You have learned that there was a special “Back to School” event for Freshmen and their families. The event was held outside, and included a buffet, people passing by could have eaten it, but it was specifically for Freshmen and their families. You have decided to send a survey to all those who are at risk.

Question 17: What is the best method for communicating with all those at risk?

Question 18: What population would you start with? (i.e. who is your highest risk group?)

Question 19: Draft an email and questionnaire to send to those at risk for the outbreak.

(You will have TWO work products for this question: 1-email to your target population and 2-a questionnaire/survey

EMAIL: (type your email below, do NOT attach it in a separate document)

SURVEY: (type your survey questions below, do NOT attach them as a separate document)

Describe counselor and client behaviors you observed that indicated the counselor was working with the client in a culturally effective manner.

Respond to Peers: Review several of your classmates’ posts, and by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week, respond to at least two of your classmates, including at least one who selected a different video than you selected. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion. Ask questions that might help to further your understanding of the discussion or take the discussion to a deeper level. What other theoretical models of career counseling might be useful to explain the observations your classmate made? Did your classmate identify any specific counselor behaviors which you also observed in the behavior of the counselor in the video you watched? Explain.

#1 Carrie Langston

Discuss the video’s content in relation to career counseling. Be sure to include terminology from both the textbook and your chosen video in your post.

The video I choose was exploring career goal with a young African American. In this video a lady is questioning a young African American woman about her dreams of being an investigator. Those dreams altered a little because she was afraid to take the biology and math courses required. She changed to criminal justice and counseling and works as a parent educator. She still questions herself regarding following her dreams as an investigator. She reminds me a lot of myself.

Describe ways in which basic characteristics of science are relevant to career counselors.

Science is very important for counseling because counseling or psychology is a study of the mind or brain which is science.

Describe which theoretical models of career counseling appeared to be utilized by the counselor in the video. Explain your rationale.

The counselor seems to use the self-concept theory as she is really digging to help the lady see who she is and how powerful she is. She is trying to remind=d her of her dreams and why she should still try. https://content.ashford.edu/books/AUABS200.16.1/sections/sec8.3?search=career%20counseling%20#w98274

Describe counselor and client behaviors you observed that indicated the counselor was working with the client in a culturally effective manner.

The counselor seems very in tuned with the client. She is challenging her, yet she is still being caring and effective. The client is clearly answering the counselor and willing get the work done so to speak. Although she seems to contradict herself some.

#2 Sharon rosinski.

Describe ways in which basic characteristics of science are relevant to career counselors.

In both characteristics of science and career counselors you have an objective of some kind in there. There is also systematic exploration in both of them.

Describe which theoretical models of career counseling appeared to be utilized by the counselor in the video. Explain your rationale.

The counselor asked about her dreams and then they talked about what she wanted to do and what she had researched. She had looked in to nursing and she looked in to the program at the end she decided to go in for counseling.

Identify usage trends of applied behavioral science by providing examples of the typical components of career intervention presented in the textbook that you observed in the video. Explain your rationale.

When you are looking for a job you have to have a plan just like anything else in life.  You have to make calls and remember to check in on those calls. You have to work on your resume and keep it updated as well

Describe counselor and client behaviors you observed that indicated the counselor was working with the client in a culturally effective manner.

Counselor was listening to what the client had to say and she was repeating when she thought that it was needed. She is keeping eye contact and shaking her head in approval.

Explain how your proposed resolution to the problem would uphold the organization’s mission and values and improve the culture and climate.

As noted in the Learning Resources, systems theory provides a meaningful and beneficial means of examining challenges in health care organizations. To do this effectively, however, it is essential to assess all system components, as some may be relatively healthy while others are problematic.

For this Assignment, you apply systems theory to the examination of a problem in a department or a unit within a health care organization. (Note: You may use the same problem you identified for the Discussion as long as it meets the criteria for this assignment.)

To prepare:

·         Review the Meyer article, “Nursing Services Delivery Theory: An Open System Approach,” in this week’s Learning Resources. Focus especially on the information presented in Table 1 (p. 2831) and Figure 2 (p. 2833).

·         Reflect on your organization or one with which you are familiar. Within a particular department or unit in this organization, identify a problem the staff is encountering.

·         Using Table 1 in the Meyer article as a guide, analyze the department or unit, identifying inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback. Consider whether the problem you have selected relates to input, throughput, output, cycles of events, and/or negative feedback.

·         Think about how you could address the problem: Consider what a desired outcome would be, then formulate related goals and objectives, and translate those goals into policies and procedures.

·         Research professional standards that are pertinent to your identified problem.

·         Reflect on the organization’s mission statement and values. In addition, consider how addressing this problem would uphold the mission and values, while improving the organizational culture and climate. (Depending on the organization you have selected, you may have explored these in the Week 1 Discussion.)

To complete:

Write a 3- to 5-page paper (page count does not include title and reference page) that addresses the following:

·         Describe a department or unit within a health care organization using systems theory terminology. Include a description of inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback.

·         Describe the problem you identified within the department or unit using an open- systems approach, and state where the problem exists using the systems theory model (input, throughput, output, cycles of events, or negative feedback).

·         Based on this information, explain how you would address the problem as follows:

o    Formulate a desired outcome.

o    Identify goals and objectives that would facilitate that outcome.

o    Translate those goals and objectives into policies and procedures for the department or unit.

o    Describe relevant professional standards.

·         Explain how your proposed resolution to the problem would uphold the organization’s mission and values and improve the culture and climate.

*This paper must include a title page, introduction, summary, and references.

Explain whether your proposed study will be qualitative or quantitative in nature. Provide a justification for your choice.

The Slender-soda company marketed its soft drink on the basis that it would help reduce weight. A lawsuit followed, claiming that Slender-soda’s campaign was misleading because it was based on a single, short-term study that was funded by Slender-soda.

The study participants were relatively lean (average body mass index [BMI] of 22), while the majority of Americans are not (a body mass index [BMI] of 25 or more according to the lawsuit) and, thus, would not be likely to lose weight by drinking the product. Slender-soda representatives believe in their product and are eager for additional research to be done that will provide strong evidence that their product will help reduce weight. To that end, Slender-soda has issued a call for proposals to continue to empirically test the weight-loss efficacy of its product.

Directions:

Assume you are submitting a proposal to test the efficacy of Slender-soda’s weight-loss product. In your proposal, analyze the original study’s research design. Make sure your analysis includes a discussion of the original study’s reliability, validity, vulnerability to bias, and any additional ethical concerns you might have with the original research.

· Propose a new study to test the efficacy of Slender-soda’s weight-loss product. Include the following information in your proposal:

o Explain whether your proposed study will be qualitative or quantitative in nature. Provide a justification for your choice.

o State your research question.

o If appropriate, develop your hypothesis statements (null and alternative). If hypothesis statements are not appropriate for your proposed study, explain why.

o Discuss your target population and sampling plan.

o Explain how you will seek to establish reliability for your research project.

o Explain how you will seek to establish validity for your research project.

o Explain how you will seek to minimize bias in your research project.

· Use the following headings to organize your proposal document:

o Analysis of the original Slender-soda research project

o Proposed research design

§ Problem statement

§ Proposed research question

§ Proposed hypothesis

o Proposed target population and sample(s)

§ Delimitations

§ Definition of terms

§ Assumptions

o Establishment of reliability and validity

§ Data

§ Data collection method

o Minimization of bias

Your final product should be a Microsoft Word document approximately 6–8 pages in length, utilizing a minimum of six scholarly sources. Make sure you employ proper grammar and spelling and apply current APA standards for writing style to your work.
