Course Reflection Paper

Your final assignment of the course is a 1-page course reflection paper in which you will describe one (1) concept that was most important to you in this course and how it can be described from a biblical worldview. For example, if you found the information about the biological bases of behavior particularly meaningful, briefly discuss how brain structure impacts behavior and describe what connection this has to your worldview (i.e. does brain structure determine our behavior, or are there also other influences that come into play? Where does God fit into this discussion?). This is intended to be a brief and concise reflection of one key concept (of your choosing) and should include the following:

Part 1—Create a title page.

1. Create a title page using proper APA style, and include the title of your paper, your name, your university affiliation, a running head, and page numbers.

2. Use the following pages of this document as a guide for what the style should look like for the pages of your document.

Part 2 – Write a 1-page paper that addresses and integrates each of the following components.

1. What one concept from the course was most important to you and why?

2. Describe the concept and any relevant research from your text.

3. How does the concept fit within a biblical worldview?

Part 3—Create a page for a reference.

1. Create a page for references.

2. Use proper APA style heading and style for the references. Please see the following pages of this document for a guide for what the style should look like.

Development of Research Foundations

Development of Research Foundations

In Weeks 1-7 of this course, you developed the foundational research elements required for the initial steps in a research study. Note that these same foundational research elements will also be used as components for a dissertation study.

In this two-part assignment, you will:

  1. Develop a research paper by adding      background and contribution to knowledge sections to your      existing foundational research elements document, and:
  2. Reflect on the SPL model discussions throughout the      first four courses of your program to convey how the SPL model      provides structure for your proposed research.

Part A: Research Foundations Paper (15 points)

Review and integrate the feedback received on your example research elements submitted as Week 3 through Week 7 assignments. Ensure each of your elements is aligned, and make revisions as necessary.

Add a background section and a contribution to knowledge section to your culminating research paper. The background section should provide an overview of the topic, and the contribution to knowledge section should describe your study’s potential contributions to the body of literature. Lay your document out using the following outline:

  • Background
  • Problem Statement
  • Purpose
  • Contribution to Knowledge
  • Research Questions
  • Theoretical or Conceptual      Framework

Part B: Reflecting on the SPL Model (5 points)

Reflect on the SPL model discussions throughout the ACCESS sequence (DOC/700, LDR/711A, and DOC/705r).

Develop a 500- to 700-word addendum to your a research foundations paper that conveys how the SPL model provides structure for your proposed study. Discuss specific moments of learning that occurred during DOC/700, LDR/711A, and DOC/705r that underlie your reflections.

Review your completed document against the information in Rubrics A and B.

Treatment of Schizophrenia and Depression

Treatment of Schizophrenia and Depression

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the required chapters from the text and review the required articles for this week.

Taking on the role of the expert in the treatment of schizophrenia or depression, you will prepare a presentation for a group of physicians who are seeking your opinion on the treatment of patients with these disorders. For this interactive assignment you will create and upload a 5- to10-slide PowerPoint presentation as well as a five-minute screencast of the presentation to share with your peers.

For this presentation, select either schizophrenia or depression as the basis for your presentation. Begin by creating your PowerPoint presentation. In the presentation, include information which explains the neurotransmitter theory behind the disorder and how the drugs used to treat the disorder affect those neurotransmitter systems.  Evaluate the risk and benefits of treating a patient with the most common type of medication and of not using drugs to treat the patient. In your evaluation, examine issues such as the rate of success with the most common drugs used as well as the incidence of side effects with these same drugs, including mortality associated with drug use. Then consider not using medications to treat the disorder. Take into account the natural course of the illness, the rate of spontaneous recovery, and the rate of mortality when untreated. You may also incorporate the use of other modes of treatment into your evaluation.

Your PowerPoint must include your presenter notes in the notes field to indicate what you intend to say during the screencast and well-chosen images to enhance the understanding of your audience. Remember that your screencast will be a maximum of five-minutes, and use your speaker notes to ensure that you will be able to present your materials within this time limit. (You may access Garr Reynolds’s Top Ten Slide Tips (Links to an external site.) for additional assistance in creating an effective visual presentation.) Once you have created your PowerPoint you will create a screencast presentation of up to 5 minutes in length using any screencasting software you choose. (Quick-Start Guides are available for Screencast-O-Matic (Links to an external site.) for your convenience.) Attach your PowerPoint file to your intial post and include the URL for your screencast in the body of the post before submitting it.

Note to Students: This assignment requires that you produce a visual presentation, supply a spoken audio narrative, and to listen the audio narrative of others.  Note you are also asked to provide a transcript of your presentation.  If you have a documented disability accommodation that might interfere with your ability to complete this assignment you may contact your instructor to develop a comparable alternative assignment.  If you have other issues that you feel may be a barrier to your ability to complete this course or this assignment please contact the Office of Access and Wellness at: access@ashford.edu.

· Describe your client’s presenting problem and concerns in no more than one paragraph. What initially brought your client to counseling?

By this point in your fieldwork experience, you have likely completed a formal or informal diagnostic assessment of a client at your site or you have discussed possible diagnoses with your site supervisor.

For this discussion, identify a client from your site and address the following questions based on your diagnostic assessment:

· Describe your client’s presenting problem and concerns in no more than one paragraph. What initially brought your client to counseling?

· Describe your diagnostic impression of the client:

o What symptoms were most apparent in your client’s presentation?

o What was your impression of the DSM diagnosis or diagnoses that best fit for your client?

o Did your client meet the full criteria for the diagnosis? If not, what other diagnoses did you consider and what additional information did you need to obtain?

· Include the specific sociocultural factors you considered in your assessment of your client. Consider age, gender, and ethnicity in your post.

Your initial post and responses are expected to be substantive in nature and to reference the assigned readings, as well as other theoretical, empirical, or professional literature to support your views and writings. Cite and reference your sources using standard APA guidelines.
