Summarize the incident, to include any background information relevant to understanding its occurrence

n 1995, a terrorist organization, Aum Shimrikyo, used sarin gas in Tokyo, Japan. For this assignment, utilize the Waldorf Online Library to research the Aum Shinrikyo incident. You will then write a case study of the incident. Your case study should address, at a minimum, the following items:

Summarize the incident, to include any background information relevant to understanding its occurrence. Describe the attributes of a sarin gas attack and why sarin, when used as a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) agent, is so dangerous. Discuss how the sarin gas was dispersed and detected. Analyze the impact of the Aum Shinrikyo attack and the potential impact had another dispersal system been used. Examine the role of emergency dispatch centers in assisting first responders to choose the correct response and protection equipment in response to this attack. What protective equipment was utilized? Analyze how the use of technology factored into the detection and response to this incident. Contrast this incident with a similar one that might occur in present day. What differences would we see in the use of technology and protective equipment in both the detection and response phases?

Your case study should be a minimum of three pages full pages, not counting the title and reference pages. Your analysis of the Aum Shinrikyo incident should present an insightful and thorough analysis with strong arguments and evidence. You must use a minimum of three sources in your analysis,  All sources used must be properly cited. Your case study, including all references, should be formatted in APA style.

Explain your views on the role of self-esteem in a child’s healthy development.

What Builds Healthy Self-Esteem?

Positive self-esteem helps children succeed in school and in life. Your course text discusses the ways that family, school, peers, mass media, and community act as socializing agents that can influence the development of self-esteem. To explore the topic of self-esteem further, review the “Influences on the Development of Self-Esteem” section of your text (pages 442-446). Also review the article by early childhood authority Lilian Katz, “How Can We Strengthen Children’s Self-Esteem?”

As you review these readings, consider the following:

  • How socializing agents can influence the development of children’s self-esteem both positively and negatively
  • The relationship between praise and self-esteem
  • Strategies that resonate with you for supporting children’s developing self-esteem

Next, read the following scenario and reflect on the influence of self-esteem on a young child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development:

Four-year-old Simone always seems willing to go along with what other children want to do but is usually timid about suggesting ideas or helping to solve problems in play scenarios. Her teacher notices that the other children let her join in, but give her the least interesting roles in dramatic play or “jobs” to do in projects that call for group effort. In turn, Simone often tires of the play quickly and wanders off by herself. During the day, Simone looks for frequent reassurance from adults in the room. Whether she’s painting a picture or working on a block building, she wants to know if she is “doing it right” and gets anxious when her efforts aren’t praised. In the mornings when Simone’s mother brings her to school, she is busy with Simone’s infant sister and so doesn’t have time to stay. A neighbor who picks up her own child in the afternoon, picks up Simone as well. Simone’s father, who works at a local “big-box” store has yet to bring Simone to school or visit. Developmentally, Simone seems in the normal range, but her teacher is concerned about how she will do next year in kindergarten, when she will be in a much larger class than her preschool group and there will be added demands on Simone.

By Day 3

With this scenario in mind and drawing on the expert information in the readings, post responses to at least two of the following:

  • Provide any insight you have regarding Simone’s self-esteem and explain your reasoning.
  • Explain your views on the role of self-esteem in a child’s healthy development.
  • Suggest two ideas that you would use as an early childhood professional to promote the development of Simone’s self-esteem and explain your reasoning.

Explain how to manage educational processes within a technology-based environment.

  • Read the Clement-Okooboh (2012) and Kwan (2012) articles and summarize and explain how an LMS can be used to support educational processes. Both articles provide good background in this area. (Kwan (2012) uses the Commonwealth of Learning e-Learning for International Organizations (COLeLIO) as an illustrative example of using a LMS.)
  • Go to Blackboard (http://www.blackboard.com/) and Moodle (http://moodle.com/) websites. Explore and examine the sites and determine the capabilities of the LMS product that they offer. Each site offers an LMS solution for a variety of audiences and markets (K-12, Higher Educations, Corporate etc.). You will have to be able to compare and contrast the LMSs from both companies.
  • Put yourself in the role of an educator who has to recommend the purchase of an LMS for your organization. You have narrowed your choices to the final two vendors – Blackboard and Moodle. You must prepare an executive briefing essay of 4-5 pages to the top administrators of your school or organization. You must recommend the selection of one of the two LMSs offered by Blackboard or Moodle.
  • Include a matrix (table) in your essay that shows a comparison of the two LMS products. You may determine which criteria you wish for the comparison. This matrix should appear as either a table or an appendix (in APA format).
  • In your executive briefing essay you must:
    • Explain how to manage educational processes within a technology-based environment.
    • Compare and contrast the features and functions of various Learning Management Systems (LMS).
    • Describe how the selected LMS is appropriate for your intended audience.

Assignment Expectations

Be sure to synthesize, not merely summarize, material from the background readings. Cite all sources in APA format.

Module 3 SLP:

The Session Long Project for this course requires students to develop a Technology-Based Learning Compendium*. This compendium will consist of a series of web-based resources and scholarly readings addressing various aspects of technology-based learning. Think of a compendium as a list or a brief summary of a larger work that you are creating. Each entry in your compendium will contain detailed information – including an annotated bibliography, and analysis and synthesis of research data. As you continue your career you should add other resources as you discover them. This SLP should continue to expand beyond this course.

* Compendium = a brief summary of content related to a specific issue; a list or inventory of items related to a particular subject area.

The following topics will be included in your Compendium, and each topic will be completed as you progress through the five modules during the Session Long Project:

Module 1 – Current Trends in Technology-based Learning

Module 2 – Learner Readiness

Module 3 – Learning Management Systems

Module 4 – Future Learning Technologies

The following information will be presented for each module topic:

  • Complete reference information – APA style.
  • Synthesis of key points/ideas presented via each resource.
  • How this resource can assist you with your e-learning needs.
  • Utility of key points/ ideas with respect to the e-learning.

SLP Assignment Expectations

In accordance with the information above:

  • Peruse the Internet and the Trident library for readings and scholarly resources addressing the topic of a Learning Management System (LMS). You must expand your search for LMSs beyond Blackboard and Moodle. There are numerous LMSs on the commercial market. Focus on LMSs that best fit the needs of your intended learners and organization.
  • Identify and select five literature resources (describing LMSs) to be included in your Technology-Based Learning Compendium. Annotate each literature entry, providing a summary of the article and highlighting the specific main ideas.
  • Write a 3- to 4-page paper in which you describe how the selected LMSs can be used and implemented in your school or organization. Be sure to discuss the features, benefits, and any other useful information regarding each LMS.
  • Please be sure to include the following information as related to the above items:
    • Complete reference information – APA style.
    • Synthesis of key points/ideas presented via each resource.
    • Utility of key points/ideas with respect to Learning Management Systems (LMS).
    • Assessment of each resource regarding the accuracy and practicality of information presented.

Module 3 Discussion:

Write an original post that defines the concept of a digital, computer-based learning management system (LMS). Be sure to address the functionality needed by LMSs to ensure successful development and implementation of technology-based learning.

You will need to respond to or evaluate three peer postings, with at least a 125-word response, which will cause you and your peers to generate creative ideas and concepts for your Case Assignment and SLP.

What issues might arise that would need additional emphasis in the event differentiation was not effective?

The third step in planning a unit plan is to prepare how you will differentiate and accommodate instruction for your students to meet their specific learning needs.

Differentiation and accommodations are some of the most important components when preparing a unit plan, because it guides the teacher in meeting the diverse needs of all students during instruction. The planning process will help the teacher determine when to differentiate and make accommodations. It is critical for teachers to observe or review academic data in order to appropriately differentiate for their students.

Part 1: Differentiation – Unit Plan

For this assignment, you will complete the Differentiation and Accommodation portion for the “Science Unit Plan” to prepare for students that are below, average, and advanced in academic ability.

Use the “Class Profile” as you are determining differentiation strategies and appropriate accommodations:

  • Differentiation strategies and learning opportunities that effectively address student’ learning needs identified in the “Class Profile.”
  • Resources and instructional adaptations to support specific differentiation needs, including testing accommodations required to meet students’ needs.

The details of the “Science Unit Plan” will continue to be fully developed and revised throughout the duration of the course, culminating in a complete unit plan due in Topic 5.

Part 2: Reflection

In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect on the process of planning for differentiation strategies in order to meet the diverse needs of students in the science content area. What issues might arise that would need additional emphasis in the event differentiation was not effective? What resources or support staff could you utilize to meet specific differentiation needs?

Support your reflection with at least two scholarly resources.

Submit the “Science Unit Plan” and reflection as one deliverable.

While APA format is not required for this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
