Consider our discussion of Anxiety Disorders, Somatic Symptom Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. (Avoid listing and discussing the diagnostic categories separately) In class (and in your book) we discussed the importance of biological factors to understanding the onset and experience of Schizophrenia. Discuss at least two biological factors that seem to be important to understanding Schizophrenia. Be sure to include some discussion of neurotransmitters and brain function or brain development. Briefly describe the symptoms necessary to diagnose Bipolar I and II and Cyclothymia (you don’t need to give me a DSM level description of symptoms – just your understanding of the important symptoms for diagnosis and that distinguish one of these disorders from the other). In addition, discuss what the disorders have in common and how treatment for all of them looks similar. Discuss the treatment of Major Depression from both a biological and psychotherapeutic approach. Choose one biological treatment and one form of psychotherapy that we discussed as effective treatments. Describe each and explain the connection to underlying etiological issues. Explain how Dissociative Disorders and the Somatic Disorders are all related in some way to an attempt to use coping skills to manage anxiety or trauma.
