Informatics Week 1

THE APPLICATION OF DATA TO PROBLEM-SOLVING

In the modern era, there are few professions that do not to some extent rely on data. Stockbrokers rely on market data to advise clients on financial matters. Meteorologists rely on weather data to forecast weather conditions, while realtors rely on data to advise on the purchase and sale of property. In these and other cases, data not only helps solve problems, but adds to the practitioner’s and the discipline’s body of knowledge.

Of course, the nursing profession also relies heavily on data. The field of nursing informatics aims to make sure nurses have access to the appropriate date to solve healthcare problems, make decisions in the interest of patients, and add to knowledge.

In this Discussion, you will consider a scenario that would benefit from access to data and how such access could facilitate both problem-solving and knowledge formation.

WEEKLY RESOURCES

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on the concepts of informatics and knowledge work as presented in the Resources.
  • Consider a hypothetical scenario based on your own healthcare practice or organization that would require or benefit from the access/collection and application of data. Your scenario may involve a patient, staff, or management problem or gap.

Patho Discussion week 1

ALTERATIONS IN CELLULAR PROCESSES

At its core, pathology is the study of disease. Diseases occur for many reasons. But some, such as cystic fibrosis and Parkinson’s Disease, occur because of alterations that prevent cells from functioning normally.

Understanding of signals and symptoms of alterations in cellular processes is a critical step in diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. For the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), this understanding can also help educate patients and guide them through their treatment plans.

For this Discussion, you examine a case study and explain the disease that is suggested. You examine the symptoms reported and explain the cells that are involved and potential alterations and impacts.

WEEKLY RESOURCES

To prepare:

By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned to a specific scenario for this Discussion. Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your assignment from your Instructor.

BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 1

Post an explanation of the disease highlighted in the scenario you were provided. Include the following in your explanation:

  • The role genetics plays in the disease.
  • Why the patient is presenting with the specific symptoms described.
  • The physiologic response to the stimulus presented in the scenario and why you think this response occurred.
  • The cells that are involved in this process.
  • How another characteristic (e.g., gender, genetics) would change your response

Greetings students and welcome to Spring Quarter 2024, Week 1.  This week we will be discussing cellular processes and the genetic environment. You will be assigned a case study.  After your initial post you will be expected to respond to two of your peers. You are also expected to respond to me should I address your post. You also have a quiz assignment this week.

Case Study: Patient is a 48-year-old male with complaints of stiffness in his fingers that migrates to his upper arm joints and increased fatigue over the last few months.  The patient works in a bank and types frequently.  He commented that he thought he could have carpal tunnel syndrome, but the fatigue was beginning to worry him.  The patient reports a family history of rheumatoid arthritis.  He is currently taking Motrin for pain which partially relieves the symptoms.  He rates his pain a 5/10 at present, aching in both hands.  The patient’s vital signs are 120/80, Pulse 78, Res 16, Temp 100.1 F.  He denies any recent weight changes.  Physical exam reveals:  Edema to 4th and 5th PIP joints bilaterally with tenderness in the same joints.  His grip strength is decreased bilaterally. No edema of knees or ankles noted.

Interview Questions template

Please see the attached documents and complete them.  Please reference the information in the documents to complete 1 & 2.

1. The Interview Guide Worksheet: Please complete the sections with yellow highlights. Please reference information in section 1 and parts in section 2 to finish section 2 and section 3.

2. Please reference Dissertation template and create a subsection for semi-structured interviews.

– Use the information you entered in the box above to help complete the contents for this sub-section guided by the dissertation rubric criteria. Remember to articulate how the instrument may generate data to address the phenomenon of interest.

– Describe the content and structure of the interview guide. How were questions developed? What are the topics of discussion? What is the number and sequence of questions?

– Create your interview guide document for the related Appendix in the dissertation template and complete the section.

Unit 5 Assignment

In this assignment, you will write a 4 – 6 page paper examining the test development process. Test developers make important decisions regarding the type of scales and items they will use within the test development process. You will analyze the different scales and item types to understand the benefits and limitations of different options available.

Be sure to address the following in your paper:

  • Describe the five stages of the test development process.
  • Describe at least two ways in which test developers could categorize scales (e.g., “age-based scales”).
  • Describe at least three examples of scaling methods that lead to ordinal-level data.
  • Describe at least one example of a scaling method that leads to interval-level data.
  • Analyze the benefits and limitations of multiple-choice, binary-choice, matching, completion (short-answer), and essay question types.
  • Cite three or more scholarly sources.

Your assignment should be a 4–6-page expository essay, not including the title and reference pages, and should include the following elements:

  • Title page: Provide your name, title of assignment, course and section number, and date.
  • Body: Answer all the questions in complete sentences and paragraphs.
    • The assignment must be written in Standard English and demonstrate superior organization, including a highly developed viewpoint and purpose that is clearly established and sustained. The communication of your thoughts must be highly ordered, logical, and unified, displaying exceptional content, organization, style, and mechanics (including the use of correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure).
    • Your responses should reflect professional writing standards, using proper tone and language.
  • Reference page: Sources listed in current APA format.
    • Include a minimum of three scholarly or academic sources to support your responses and conclusions.
  • Use Arial or Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced and left-aligned.
  • Use standard 1″ margins on all sides.
  • Use APA formatting and citation style.

This assignment assesses the following Course Outcome:

PS505-3: Analyze the benefits and limitations of different test scales and item types.
