There are different forms of validity measurement, that can be used to measure a phenomenon. One such measurement is face validity. Face validity is a measure that when used is measuring what it is intended to measure (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services,2023).A measurement is an assignment of numbers to a phenomenon of interest (Tappen,2016).

When doing face validity some issues to be considered include it been subjective. It is whatever you think it is, because everyone can have a different opinion. According to Tappen, many researchers believe face validity is irrelevant (2016). Because face validity is considered to be the least amongst the types of validity measurement, you want to prevent bias. You also want to prevent manipulation. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid notes manipulation can occur when groups meet face to face and one member tries to influence the opinion of another member (2023).

Also, you are able to put things the way you want, if you want to achieve a certain result.  When using face validity some pitfalls to avoid, include when measuring grief in persons who have experience loss, your questions should be geared towards sadness, if you are measuring low productivity in young adults, you will want to ask questions about employment. If you are measuring lack of physical activity in teenagers, you would want to ask questions about access to playground. As was noted by Tappen, if persons believe the items are relevant, they will feel more comfortable in answering the questions (2016).

Considerations regarding face validity

Face validity means that the measure has the appearance of being relevant. While many research experts view face validity as being essentially worthless, they concede that there are a couple of aspects that can be useful. When subjects responding to research questions feel that the questions look relevant to what they believe they are supposed to be answering questions about, they are more likely to answer the questions (Tappen, 2023).

Face validity, as a form of assessment validity, requires careful consideration to ensure accurate interpretations of test results. Several issues need to be taken into account when using face validity, as highlighted by Taherdoost (2016). One issue to consider is the subjective nature of face validity. Face validity relies on individuals’ perceptions and judgments, which can introduce bias. Different individuals may have different opinions about whether a test appears valid based on their own experiences, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds. For example, a self-assessment questionnaire on leadership skills may appear to have face validity to individuals who perceive themselves as strong leaders but may seem less valid to those who do not identify with leadership qualities. To avoid this pitfall, it is important to ensure that the test items are designed to be relevant and appropriate for the population being assessed and to pilot test the instrument with diverse individuals to gather feedback and make necessary revisions.

Another issue to consider is the potential for social desirability bias. Test takers may alter their responses to conform to socially desirable norms or expectations, rather than providing honest responses. This can impact the face validity of the test, as it may not accurately reflect the true behaviors or characteristics being assessed. For example, a self-report measure of drug use may appear to have face validity if it asks about socially unacceptable behaviors, but individuals may underreport their actual drug use due to social desirability bias. To avoid this pitfall, it is important to use measures that minimize the potential for social desirability bias, such as using indirect or subtle measures and providing assurances of confidentiality and anonymity to encourage honest responses (Taherdoost, 2016).

Assignment 1

In the 21st century the dominant art style is now street art.  A mix of academic, establishment, fine artists and graffiti writers, taggers, and outsider artists.

I want you to think about the vocabulary and the concepts from the book chapters.  As you watch the video and see the work I want you to think about how our vocabulary words might be applied to describe and analyze the art and the ideas being expressed.  Think about formal analysis, contextual analysis, and biographical analysis.  Skip ahead to chapter 1.10 to read more on this.  But mostly, have fun and just write as you would speak in your own voice having a reaction to art and ideas that are new to you.

I want you to watch one of these street art documentaries and write a one page reaction to the movie you choose.  You may have to select and copy and then paste into an address bar.  If you choose the short ones do several of them.  If you choose a 1 hour or more video just do one.  If one leads you to other videos, please, fall down the rabbit hole and tell me about it in your paper.

Google and Wikipedia for additional content on the art and artists in these videos before you start writing your thoughts and reactions.

Something useful to consider when analyzing this kind of art is “it IS illegal, should it be?  are there exceptions?  Can you compare it to art from other context?”

Something useful to consider is “are there non-street artists from earlier periods in art history, from the renaissance, from the 1960’s, from the 1920’s, from the 1830’s that may have influenced art that is happening now?  That is influencing street art?”

Write down key names, do google searches to see if they have a website, social media, or pictures of their work online, possibly other written articles.  GO!

Qualitative Descriptive: Data Sources, Data Analysis, Alignment, and Rationale

n your upcoming residency, you will need to justify your choices relative to the research design of your proposed study. Throughout this course, you will explore data sources and analysis options for several qualitative research designs. You will also explore how to justify the choices of data sources and data analysis and align those components with the remainder of the proposed research study. In this assignment, you will explore the data sources and analysis options for conducting your proposed dissertation research study using a qualitative descriptive design. You will also explain how well these might align with the components of your proposed research study as you described them in the previous course. Given the data sources, data analysis options, and alignment considerations, you will also offer a rationale for potentially choosing the qualitative descriptive design.

General Requirements:Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:

  • Refer to the problem statement, purpose statement, and research questions you drafted for conducting your potential research study as a qualitative descriptive study during the previous course.
  • This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
  • Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
  • Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association for specific guidelines related to doctoral level writing. The manual contains essential information on manuscript structure and content, clear and concise writing, and academic grammar and usage.
  • This assignment requires that at least two additional scholarly research sources related to this topic, and at least one in-text citation from each source be included.
  • You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.

Directions:Consider the specific language designated by GCU as indicative of qualitative research.Write a paper (1,500-1,750 words) in which you discuss the data sources and data analysis options for conducting your proposed dissertation research study using a qualitative descriptive design. Include the following in your discussion:

  1. State the problem statement, purpose statement, and research questions you drafted for conducting your potential research study as a qualitative descriptive study during the previous course.
  2. A description of potential data sources for the study. Use language appropriate to a qualitative descriptive design.
  3. A description of potential data analysis approaches for the study. Use language appropriate to a qualitative descriptive design.
  4. A discussion of how well these potential data sources and analysis approaches align with the previously developed qualitative descriptive components of the potential research study.
  5. An analysis of the fit and alignment of this design to the proposed problem statement, purpose statement, research questions, data sources, and data analysis approaches. Do you believe this is a reasonable design for addressing your study topic? Why or why not?

PLEASE SEE INSTRUCTOR FEEDBACK: The Problem Statement be the same for each one? Why is it different for phenomenology?
