The fourth assignment requires you to start critically engaging with a philosophical argument.
This assignment has three parts.
In the first part, you are to summarize Hume’s view as expressed in ONE of the TWO passages below.  This part is to be no more than two pages (~500 words).
(1)    “[H]aving once acquir’d this notion of causation from the memory, we can extend the same chain of causes, and consequently the identity of our persons beyond our memory, and can comprehend times, and circumstances, and actions, which we have entirely forgot, but suppose in general to have existed” (Treatise, 1.4.6.20).
(2)    “Custom … is the great guide of human life” (Enquiry, 5.6).
In the second part, you are to pose what you take to be a significant objection to Hume’s view.  This part is to be no more than half a page (~125 words).
In the third part, you are to explain how Hume might respond to your objection.  This part is to be no more than half a page (~125 words).
Organize your paper with three separate headings: “Exposition,” “Objection,” and “Reply.”
Your paper will thus be no more than three pages (~750 words) in total (double-spaced, 12-point font, normal margins).  The word and page count does not include your bibliography.
