Jessica is a 15-year-old female who was referred to your community mental health clinic by the local child advocacy center. A year ago, Jessica disclosed to her cousin that she had been sexually abused by their grandfather from the ages of 8 to 12. Jessica’s grandfather passed away last year. While at the funeral, Jessica was asked by an older cousin if the grandfather used to touch Jessica too. During Jessica’s forensic interview, she stated that she felt guilty for “letting it happen†and that, because she had never told, it was her fault the younger granddaughters were abused. Jessica has been traumatized by enduring reoccurring sexual abuse and then, upon the loss of her grandfather, was further tormented by learning that her sister had also suffered sexual abuse by her grandfather. The stress, trauma, and guilt Jessica suffered greatly affected her healthy coping skills, leading her to intentionally engage in self-harming behaviors to cope with sexual abuse flashbacks.
