Several models are prominent in the field of addictions; these models include the medical model, moral model, and the biopsychosocial model. A particular model advocated by an addictions professional will influence the professional’s choices of assessment methods and treatment of addiction.

To prepare:

  • Consider the following definition of addiction by Michael Miller, M.D., former president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine: “At its core, addiction is not just a social problem or a moral problem or a criminal problem. It is a brain problem whose behaviors manifest in all these others areas…The disease is about brains, not drugs. It is about underlying neurology, not outward actions” (Addiction Treatment Magazine, 2011).

Assignment Directions:

  • Review the article, “New Definition of Addiction Causing Controversy Among Doctors.” (See Reference)
  • Research two articles that support or refute this position.
  • Examine Miller’s statement and, based on your research, identify which model it reflects and the implications for the assessment process. (See attached for addiction models)

Submit by Day 7 a 3- to 4-page paper (Not including title or ref. pg.) that includes the following:

  • A brief description of the articles you chose and an explanation of their significance to Miller’s definition
  • An explanation of the model reflected in Miller’s statement and its implications for the assessment process
  • An explanation of the controversy that exists between models of addiction and their effects on assessment
  • An explanation of the relationship between the models of addiction and assessment processes

Cite your sources using APA guidelines including citing within paper).

Analyze the selected characteristics to develop a forensic profile for that particular type of offense. For example, how would you use the two offense characteristics you have selected for murder to develop inferences regarding the personality of a murderer?

Assignment 2: RA 2: Personality Characteristics and Criminal Behavior

A particular set of personality characteristics does not turn a person into a criminal. However, a criminal will have the same set of characteristics. This concept may not be easy to understand. Here is another example: all college graduates have attended college, but not everyone who attended college is a college graduate. The mistake “if A then B” is the same as “if B then A” is a common one in research, criminal investigation, and profiling.

Criminal profiling is a difficult task. Complete the following three parts and present it in your report.

Part I

Identify at least five offense characteristics of each of the following crimes: sex offense, murder, acquisitive crime, organized crime, and terrorism.

Part II

Choose two offenses for those listed in Part I. Using the selected characteristics, complete the following for each of the two offenses you selected:

  • Analyze the selected characteristics to develop a forensic profile for that particular type of offense. For example, how would you use the two offense characteristics you have selected for murder to develop inferences regarding the personality of a murderer?
  • Explain how an offender’s level of cognitive and emotional functioning, as well as social and environmental factors, could contribute to his or her maladaptive behavior in each of the above offenses.
  • Identify and justify the types of tests and/or personality measures that might be used to gather additional information for each of the two offenses.
  • Identify and justify the type of collateral information you would need to learn about the offender in the case of each of the two crimes.

Part III

  • Identify the differences in ethical standards between a criminal investigation and a psychological interview.
  • Offer your recommendations for future research needed to advance the science and research of psychological profiling techniques.
  • Discuss the different ethical considerations one must follow as an investigator and as a psychologist.

Support your responses giving reasons and examples from 8–10 scholarly resources.

Write a 7- to 9-page report in a Microsoft Word document. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Reflect on each of your answers and describe your thought process. Provide any theoretical support for your communication behavior.

Recall our discussion of perceptions and how they influence our behavior. In organizational communication, perceptions play a big part in our thinking and response mechanisms; thus, affecting how we behave. We encounter barriers and noise that only compound the decision-making process. This dynamic is in motion each time we face a situation at work or anywhere we may be.

Respond to the following work scenarios according to this scale:

A – Always
B – Sometimes
C – Never

  1. I believe and trust everything that my superior tells me.
  2. With communication, I process and filter the details to my advantage.
  3. Information is shared across my organization efficiently.
  4. Open and honest communication is always encouraged.
  5. Rumors and grapevine are effectively managed.

Reflect on each of your answers and describe your thought process. Provide any theoretical support for your communication behavior.

The Portfolio Activity entry should be a minimum of 400 words and not more than 750 words. Use APA citations and references if you use ideas from the readings or other sources.

Use the attached template for a Journal Review on Herscovitch et. al. (2009). In your paper, you should write your responses under each question and include the questions in the assignment.

Paper should be between 4-5 pages in length. Some questions on the template specifically mention the minimum number of paragraphs expected in order to fully answer the question. DO NOT USE DIRECT QUOTES!!! You should summarize in your own words.

Identify and describe at least one proposed solution for each barrier. Your solution for the micro barrier must include an analysis of various potential funding options (both independent and integrated)

For the second written assignment of the course, you will continue in the design of your proposed model program by demonstrating your understanding of your selected population’s challenges, which negatively impact this group’s health and well-being. Based on this week’s research, conduct an assessment of the barriers, limitations, and other distinguishing features, as they exist within your community. Your paper, at a minimum, must contain the following elements:

  1. A description of at least three critical barriers that impact the health and well-being of a chosen group; one must be a micro-level (individual) barrier that is financial, one must be a macro-level (community/state) barrier that relates to access and funding for care, and  the third barrier may be one of your choosing.
  2. An analysis of the regulatory, legal, ethical, and accreditation requirements/issues that relate to these barriers (you are required to use outside sources, such as those found in the Ashford University Library, to address this section in sufficient detail).
  3. Identify and describe at least one proposed solution for each barrier. Your solution for the micro barrier must include an analysis of various potential funding options (both independent and integrated). Your solution for the macro barrier must include an analysis of financing resources for health care.

Your assignment should be a minimum of  three- to- four pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), and should include a minimum of three scholarly sources cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Please note: All assignments in this course are progressive; therefore you should use the same population selected in your Week Two assignment. The Week Two assignment’s contents do not need to be re-submitted with the assignment.
