Explain the ethical issues and how the study may have violated principles of ethical behavior.

Researchers in psychology (including students) must follow the American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (2010) to protect the rights and welfare of research participants and ensure no harm will come to them. Furthermore, an Institutional Review Board (IRB) committee must review and approve all research studies involving humans and/or animals before they begin. It is the IRB committee’s responsibility to evaluate proposed research studies per the APA’s ethical principles and codes of conduct as well as to assess the possible benefits and risks of the studies.

An effective way to develop your research skills is to analyze sample studies. For this Assignment, you will review brief research descriptions, identify and address ethical issues, and apply an alternative research methodology.

To prepare:

  • Review again Chapter 1 from the course text.
  • Read Chapter 3 from the course text.
  • Read the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct: Including 2010 Amendments.

The Assignment (1–2 pages):

Select one of the following four research studies:

  1. A researcher was studying initial interactions between people. While two students were supposedly waiting for an experiment to begin, the researcher covertly videotaped their actions and conversation. Afterward, the researcher told the students about the video recording and gave them the opportunity to have the tape erased.
  2. A researcher worked for a time on the production line of a large manufacturing plant. His status as a researcher was unknown to his coworkers. It was not until he was about to leave that he revealed his purpose and identity to his coworkers.
  3. To study what types of people are most likely to give money to a stranger, people on city streets were asked for money by an individual who said he had just lost his wallet. No one was ever told that he or she was part of a research project.
  4. To study the effects of alcohol on decision making, a graduate student interviewed college students after they had left a campus bar. With a portable breathalyzer, he registered their blood alcohol levels. Although some of them were found to be intoxicated beyond the legal state limits, and many of them were going to be driving home, he did not inform them of their blood alcohol levels.

Complete the following for the study you selected (rather than reproduce the scenario in your response, indicate your study selection with a number):

  1. Explain the ethical issues and how the study may have violated principles of ethical behavior.
  2. Propose an alternative research design from the assigned Learning Resources that could possibly remedy the identified issues, (e.g., naturalistic observation, simulation study), and explain in detail how the new design would be set up and carried out.

Reminder: Do not copy or retype the example study scenario into your Assignment.

Note: Support the responses within your Assignment with evidence from the assigned Learning Resources. Provide a reference list for resources you used for this Assignment.

Discussion – Week 2

Medications

One of the important things to consider is this fact: Every substance put on or in the body has the potential for side effects. Side effects tell you that something is in/on your body that is outside of homeostasis and alerts you to check it out and determine how to get rid of its toxic effects or learn to live with it.  Side effects range from unnoticeable to extremely difficult to manage. Your role as a counselor is to monitor those effects that your clients are experiencing and help them figure out how to wait them out or help them take back an important discussion of concern to their prescriber. It is not your role ever to tell your clients to stop using or modify the use of medication; those conversations are outside of your scope of practice and could cause grave harm to the client.

Remember, as clinicians, your work is much more than medication monitoring. You have a vital role in unearthing what the root causes of the mental health and substance use disorders are and in helping the client to address those causes and resulting consequences.

To prepare for the Discussion:

  • Review Chapters 2 and 3 of the textbook.
  • Review the media pieces listed in the Learning Resources.
  • Review the expectations in the Discussion Rubric
  • Choose two websites from the Handout “Academic, Scientific and Professional Sites for Researching Medications”, found in this week’s Learning Resources.

By Day 3

Respond to the following prompts.

  • What are the pros and cons of each site you chose?
  • Where does each site get its information?
  • What makes the site academic and reputable?
  • What did you notice was different about each site when you entered the same medication (e.g., diazepam) into each?

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Describe common rites of passage from two cultures around the world and compare them to a common American rite of passage.

We have learned that adolescence is a time of transition between childhood and adulthood. A critical milestone of this stage is the ability to successfully achieve a sense of identity. Around the world, there are different rites of passage to mark the transition to adulthood. In the United States, this might include obtaining a driver’s license, landing one’s first job, senior prom, or high school graduation. In this assignment, we will explore the role that family and society play in the development of the individual’s sense of self.

By Saturday, August 24, 2013, create two documents for parents of minority teens 1) A 9–12-slide PowerPoint presentation (complete with speaker’s notes) and 2) an accompanying 1–2-page handout/flier in Word document or PDF format. Be sure that both illustrate the following:

  1. Describe common rites of passage from two cultures around the world and compare them to a common American rite of passage. Possible resources might include National Geographicand the Argosy University Online Library.
  2. Compare and contrast these rites to common US rites of passage. Do they coincide with the physical, cognitive, or socioemotional changes taking place at this age? Describe which specific changes (physical, cognitive, or socioemotional) they coincide with. Does this explain their importance in a particular culture?
  3. How might such a social ritual, such as a rite of passage, influence the identity formation process of adolescents?
  4. In light of Erikson and Marcia’s theories, discuss how the process of identity development is affected when the adolescent belongs to a minority group (racial, ethnic, sexual, or religious). Be sure to explain these theories and how they apply to identity development.
  5. Summarize research from at least two peer-reviewed* studies on the effect of minority status on identity development, ensuring you describe the main findings of the study as well as the research methods used to study the topic.
  6. Apply the information you gathered from the online notes, textbook, and research articles to provide at least three practical recommendations for what the family, school, and community can do to ease the process for adolescents.

*Peer-reviewed means an article from a reputable journal, which can be found in the Argosy University Online Library. Peer reviewed indicates that other professionals in the field have reviewed and deemed it worthy of publication, in contrast to much if what we find online: someone posting something he or she wants to, without someone else verifying that the research methods were rigorous enough and the study is valid. Use your textbook and course lectures as your primary resources, as well as articles from the Argosy University Online Library. If you must supplement from a website, do NOT use .coms. Instead, look for .org, .gov, and sometimes .edu for more reputable sources. Never use Wikipedia or about.com.
