Based on the scenario provided, determine two to three reasons the employees are not motivated in the new work environment. These reasons should be founded on concepts covered in the text.

Assignment Content

  1. Two small manufacturing businesses in Chicago, IL operated in direct competition with each other for 20 years. Due to recent changes in economic conditions, the two businesses combined in a horizontal merger. When the businesses merged, 20% of the workforce at each company was let go. The combined employees now work together in a new building. The transition has not been a smooth one. Much of the remaining workforce is unmotivated to make personal changes to fit into the new business. Many employees are unclear about the direction the new organization is taking and the specific goals that need to be met. Communication among employees is also strained; employees are resisting working with people who were previously their competitors. There is very little information sharing, and there is a lack of cooperation among employees.

You have been called in to assess the situation and make recommendations to help motivate employees as members of the new business. You will deliver a presentation to the management team with your proposal.

Create a 12- to 15-slide presentation with speaker notes that includes introduction and a conclusion slides.

Address the following in your presentation:

    • Based on the scenario provided, determine two to three reasons the employees are not motivated in the new work environment. These reasons should be founded on concepts covered in the text.
    • Include your rationale regarding why these two to three reasons are affecting the employees.
    • Locate at least three articles in the University Library that address your identified reasons. Use information in the articles to create solutions to the business’s problems.
    • Format any citations in your presentation consistent with APA guidelines.Submit the assignment.

Describe the significance of the proposed investigation by explaining how the results promise to advance the scientific knowledge base. In three sentences or fewer, explain how this inquiry is original.

Develop a draft of CHAPTER 1. While you will have the opportunity to revisit and finalize Chapter 1 in Assessment 4, this submission should be fully developed.

Note: Developing a research proposal requires specific steps that need to be executed in a sequence. The assessments in this course are presented in sequence and must be completed in order. Only one assessment can be submitted at a time. Subsequent submissions should include highlighted changes.

For your first project assessment, you will draft CHAPTER 1, using the appropriate guide that is located in the resource section of this assessment. This outline will provide you with an opportunity to make a case as to why this research should be explored. Make sure that your rationale is evidence based.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Determine the scientific merit of the professional literature.
    • Background of the study: Summarize briefly what is known so far about the phenomena under investigation.
    • Statement of the problem: Present the description of the research problem and an explanation that describes how the research problem led to the current research question.
    • Purpose of the study: Describe what information is needed in order to advance the knowledge base.
    • Research design: Summarize the design approach by identifying whether it is qualitative or quantitative.
  • Competency 6: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for members of the psychological profession.
    • Adhere to APA style and formatting guidelines; writing is concise and well organized.

APA Resources

Because this is a psychology course, you must format this assessment according to APA guidelines, since it is the writing style of the profession. Use the following resources to guide your work. Additional resources about APA can be found in the Research Resources in the left navigation menu of your courseroom.

  • American Psychological Association. (2010). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). Washington, DC: Author.
    • Chapter 1, “Writing for the Behavioral and Social Sciences.”
    • Chapter 2, “Manuscript Structure and Content.”
    • Chapter 3, “Writing Clearly and Concisely.”

Preparation

Before you begin, carefully read the course overview and syllabus as well as chapters 1-3 of the APA manual. Review the Chapters 1–5 Integrated Project Overview document under Required Resources and the Research Proposal Development Resources under Suggested Resources. These tools are fundamental to your understanding of how to approach the first stage of research.

The introductory section of your Integrative Project (Research Proposal): Chapters 1–5 will include two significant descriptions:

  • The area of practice that you have chosen for the project.
  • The significance of this topic for the scientific community.

For Assessment 1, you will submit a draft of CHAPTER 1 for feedback and grading. To complete this assessment, you need to do the following:

  • Identify a topic as it relates to the field of psychology. The more specific and focused your topic, the more useful and comprehensive it will be. Present your topic that will guide your search of the literature. Be sure, as you identify your topic, to identify the context that the population inhabits. Consider identifying gender, developmental stage, age range, region, diagnoses or health status, intervention or therapy, assessment tools, racial identity, ethnic identity, class, history and other specifics associated with the questions that you wish to explore.
  • Identify the knowledge gap or problem you wish to address. In your proposal, your readers will need to understand why this research is needed and how it would contribute to the overall knowledge pool. To help with this process, become familiar with existing literature. As you read the work of others, consider the following:
    • What types of problems are all or most of the authors attempting to address?
    • What questions are these authors explicitly asking? What questions might they be implicitly asking?
  • Create a research question that serves as the guiding question for the proposal, which should include a valid reason for your positioning. The research question should determine the scope of your proposal.

Please refer to the APA manual, pages 27–28, for detailed instructions on how to complete this assignment. You must use the required subheadings that are listed in the templates provided.

  • Title page: Include a brief yet descriptive title of 15 words or less.
    • For tips on writing titles, read the How to Write an Effective Title and Abstract and Choose Appropriate Keywords document linked in the Resources.
  • Abstract: Leave this blank for now. You will complete this in Chapter 4.
  • Table of contents (TOC).
  • Introduction: Start your proposal by presenting “the problem being investigated, the importance of the study, and an overview of your research strategy. Use the literature to support your statement of the problem.”
  • Background of the Problem
    • What do we know so far about the area of the literature that you reviewed?
    • What do you think we need to know to advance the knowledge base?
    • How will this new knowledge serve the stakeholders (scientists, care providers, families, patients, institutions) that may in turn be served by implementation of new developments?
  • Statement of the Problem
    • Identify the gap in research or the need for additional research in your area.
  • Purpose of the Study
    • Why does the problem deserve new research?
    • Are you resolving inconsistency in previous research? Extending the reach of a theory? Solving a social problem?
  • Significance of the Study
    • Describe the significance of the proposed investigation by explaining how the results promise to advance the scientific knowledge base. In three sentences or fewer, explain how this inquiry is original.
  • Research Question(s)
    • Articulate whether the research question is a qualitative or a quantitative question and provide a rationale. For quantitative research questions, include your hypothesis or hypotheses.
  • Definition of Terms
    • For a qualitative study, the definition of terms should relate to how the participants should interpret the definitions.
    • For a quantitative study, the definition of terms should relate to how the variables will be quantified.
  • Research Design
    • Discuss the method and how the question will be answered. Be sure to make mention of the relevant APA Code of Ethics, but not how you intend to address them. How you will address the codes and ensure they are adhered to will be covered in Chapter 3.
  • Reference Page
    • Include at least 10 scholarly, peer-reviewed articles. Make sure they are also cited within text.

Explain the differences between the correlates for criminal behavior in terms of the degree to which they contribute to and explain criminal behavior.

An important task in studying and understanding criminal behavior is identifying biological, psychological, and social (or sociological) developmental risk factors—such as weak family structure, poverty, and peer rejection—that may contribute to deviant behavior and crime. A task of criminologists, in fact, is to study developmental risk factors to gather information about the degree to which they influence criminal behavior outcomes. Risk factors have a strong and consistent relationship with criminal behavior. These risk factors are called correlates of criminal behavior. However, it does not mean that these correlates cause criminal behavior. There is no formula of correlates that consistently leads to criminal behavior. Identifying correlates, as well as developmental risk factors for particular individuals, however, might indicate the possibility of future criminal behavior and, therefore, may aid in preventing it.

For this Discussion, review the case scenario of Gary F. and the “Driving While Black: Effects of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender on Citizen Self Reports of Traffic Stops and Police Actions” article from the resources. Consider the developmental risk factors and correlates of criminal behavior. Then, select two correlates of crime and criminal behavior to compare for this Discussion.

Post a description of the correlates you selected. Explain the differences between the correlates for criminal behavior in terms of the degree to which they contribute to and explain criminal behavior. Then, based on the case scenario about Gary F., provide a brief description of at least two developmental risk factors implied in the case scenario. Explain how each may have contributed to the criminal behavior described. Then, explain why each might contribute to criminal behavior in some individuals but not others. Finally, explain at least one conclusion you drew about the correlates for criminal behavior based on your comparison.

Masters & Disasters discussion forum

In our current topic for this course, Love & Communication, many concepts were explained that deal with relationships, love, intimacy, and, yes, divorce/separation as well. In his monumental research on long term couples (married/cohabiting/committed), Professor John Gottman uncovered communication patterns in thousands of couples and, from this data on communication patterns within couples, he was able to accurately predict which couples would have successful relationships (stay together & be happy) versus which couples would have unsuccessfulrelationships (split up; or stay together but be miserable).

He called the successful couples “Masters” — he used this term because these couples ‘mastered’ the best communication practices with their partners. It’s not that they didn’t fight; in fact, many of the “Masters” fought, for sure. It’s that when they fought, they fought or argued in ways that were NOT destructive or hurtful to the relationship. They’d figured out — or mastered — how to fight fair and still love each other, maintaining respect and care for one another.

The other couples in his study — the unsuccessful ones — fought as well, but they destroyed each other in the process and, eventually, destroyed their relationships as well. These couples were unsuccessful because they tore each other down or alienated each other so much that there was nothing left to the relationship and, unfortunately, they usually ended in divorce/separation within 5-7 years of marriage/commitment. He called these couples “Disasters” because the couples fought in ways that left them filled with resentment, anger, emotional distance, or alienation from their partners — definitely NOT a recipe for success in an intimate relationship!

Gottman’s method for assessing couples’ communication styles with each other was so reliable that he was able to predict when NEW couples would end up divorcing simply based on their communication patterns during conflict! It was powerful research then and still is today.

For this discussion, look over the materials posted under “Lecture Materials” –> Module 5 –> Love, Intimacy, & Communication. In those slides, you will see several slides related to Gottman’s research. Read and reflect about the information that explains what the “Masters” and “Disasters” actually DO when communication during conflict in their relationships. In your textbook, look at pages 248 (Box: “Communication Patterns & Partner Satisfaction”) and page 251 (Box: “Lessons from the Love Lab”).

If you’ve been in an intimate relationship in the past or if you currently are in one, these communication behaviors and ways of dealing with conflict probably resonate with you. If you haven’t been in a relationship, you can still apply it to how you might imagine a future relationship.

For this assignment:

1) PICK THREE of the communication patterns (from page 251 in your book). You can pick any combination — from the Masters or the Disaster, or both — but pick patterns that you believe are most important/hurtful/helpful/difficult to perform during the course of a relationship. This is a very nuanced and opinion-based answer that you will provide, so think about it carefully. You can feel free to write about which of the “bad” behaviors you’ve done in a past/present relationship or “good” behaviors. Name and briefly describe each of your chosen three behaviors.

2) Write about how each behavior positively or negatively impacts the relationship or how it can potentially change a relationship. Again, this is your opinion, but the point here is that I want you to reflect about these behaviors and how to integrate the “best practices” or Masters into your own life.
