  • Exercise 1.1: Discovering      the Subject of Your Interest or Issue of Inquiry
  • Exercise 1.2:      Understanding the Personal Viewpoint
  • Exercise 1.3: Selecting      the Focus of Your Study
  • Exercise 1.5: Developing      Your Interest Statement

Additional Question: What are your research and null hypotheses?

IMPORTANT!!

I wanted to give you a little information about the upcoming Assignment in Week 2. This is a worksheet assignment and is the only assignment that allows you to use the first person as you will be exploring your interests that will lead to a research topic. All of the written assignments are meant to build on each other toward your Week 5 Research Proposal. My comments on format should be considered very carefully and it would be a good idea to make the corrections I mention in every assignment. EVERY WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT, INCLUDING THE WORKSHEET ASSIGNMENTS, REQUIRES A CORRECTLY FORMATTED TITLE PAGE AND MUST BE SUBMITTED AS A .doc or .docx .

16——The Literature Review

A research topic is more than simply the main idea of a paper. The topic provides the entry point to the literature, decides the bound- ary of the literature review, identifies the subject of research, and determines the strategy necessary to answer the research question.

These transformations require three tasks: (1) choosing a per- sonal interest, (2) refining that interest, and (3) using the research interest to identify a specific research preliminary topic. Figure 1.1 shows these tasks.

Task 1. Choose a ReseaRCh InTeResT

Most applied research begins by selecting an everyday problem, interest, or concern for further study. Selecting an interest for study needs great care and forethought. As the opening quote says: “Hoe in haste, harvest in tears.” Selecting a suitable interest for research is critical to the success of the project. This search begins with per- sonal reflection that uncovers an interest.

Research interests come mainly from the researcher’s curiosity. Various professional and public settings provide the context for these

Discuss how you can improve your health and longevity in light of your findings in this questionnaire, your understanding of epigenetics, and your knowledge of your family history. This should be your final page.

  1. Watch the epigenetics video from PBS. Begin your paper by defining epigenetics in your own words and discussing your reaction to the video. (you can choose whatever disease)
  2. Interview your family members and complete the Family History-Dr. Oz.pdf .  Find out which disease(s) you are most at risk for.
  3. Research and locate one article on epigenetics and whatever disease you are most at risk for (select a study on research conducted on humans) from a reputable academic source:

Reputable Sources:

  • journal articles
  • government publications based on research

Do not use:

  • magazines of any sort, whether they are on paper or online
  • Websites of any type, including epigenetics websites
  • Wikipedia

How to Perform Your Research

  • Use the College Library in person or online (log in with your new MDC ID number (the one that is all numbers). Your password is the last four digits of that same MDC ID unless you have changed it.

Read the epigenetics article you find. Continue your paper with a discussion of the epigenetics article. Be sure to paraphrase (put things in your own words) and be sure to cite the author(s) of the article you find using APA style (see the section below on using APA style). Aim for about a page for this part of your paper.

  1. Discuss the concept of epigenesis in light of your family history and the article you read. Aim for one page for this section of your paper.
  2. Complete the Living to 100 Questionnaire. Integrate your findings on the questionnaire into your discussion. Aim for another page.
  3. Discuss how you can improve your health and longevity in light of your findings in this questionnaire, your understanding of epigenetics, and your knowledge of your family history. This should be your final page.

You can go over or under a page for any of the sections of the paper as long as your total paper is 1,000 words not counting the references.

General Rules for an “A” Paper (check your paper against this list)

◻    Place your name and reference number on the first page. Use page numbers.

Respond to at least two colleagues in the following ways:  Compare the diagnosis you provided and the process in which you reached the diagnosis with those of your colleague.

Discussion: Applying Differential Diagnosis to Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Social work clinicians keep a wide focus on several potential syndromes, analyzing patterns of symptoms, risks, and environmental factors. Narrowing down from that wider focus happens naturally as they match the individual symptoms, behaviors, and risk factors against criteria A–E and other baseline information in the DSM-5.  Over time, as you continue your social work education, this process will become more automatic and integrated. In this Discussion, you practice differential diagnosis by examining a case that falls on the neurodevelopmental spectrum.

To prepare:  Read “The Case of Bogdan” and identify relevant symptoms and factors. You may want to make a simple list of the symptoms and facts of the case to help you focus on patterns. Read the Morrison (2014) selection. Focus on Figure 1.1, “The Roadmap for Diagnosis,” to guide your decision making. Identify four clinical diagnoses relevant to Bogdan that you will consider as part of narrowing down your choices. Be prepared to explain in a concise statement why you ruled three of them out. Confirm whether any codes have changed by checking this website: American Psychiatric Association. (2017, October 1). Changes to ICD-10-CM codes for DSM-5 diagnoses. Washington, DC: Author. Retrieved from https://www.psychiatry.org/psychiatrists/practice/dsm/updates-to-dsm-5/coding-updatesBy

Day 3 Post a 300- to 500-word response in which you address the following:  Provide a full DSM-5 diagnosis of Bogdan.

Remember, a full diagnosis should include the name of the disorder, ICD-10-CM code, specifiers, severity, and the Z codes (other conditions that may be a focus of clinical attention). Keep in mind a diagnosis covers the most recent 12 months. Explain the diagnosis by matching the symptoms identified in the case to the specific criteria for the diagnosis. Identify which four diagnoses you initially considered in the case of Bogdan, using the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria to explain why you selected these four items. In one or two sentences each, explain why three of these diagnoses were excluded. Explain any obvious eliminations that could be made from within the neurodevelopmental spectrum. Describe in detail how Bogdan’s symptoms match up with the specific diagnostic criteria for the primary disorder that you finally selected for him. Note two other relevant DSM-5 criteria for that illness from the sections on “diagnostic features” and “development and course” that fit his case.

By Day 6 Respond to at least two colleagues in the following ways:  Compare the diagnosis you provided and the process in which you reached the diagnosis with those of your colleague. Explain how the Z codes (other conditions that may be a focus of clinical attention) that your colleague identified may influence Bogdan’s upcoming treatment.

Describe the atmosphere and dynamics of the group, what developmental stage it was in, the level of participation, and how you think members benefitted from this group. (You may find chapter 16 of the Forsyth text helpful for this section.)

Support Group Paper Assignment Instructions

Overview

After attending four support/self-help group meetings, you will describe your observations of group member and leader behaviors; group dynamics; and meeting content and processes. You will reflect on how your experiences with the group compares to best practices and principles for group counseling and support groups that you have learned about in this course. Your paper must demonstrate critical thinking, literature-supported analysis, and personal application.

Instructions

The paper must be 7–8 pages or about 2,500 words, not counting the title page, abstract, and reference page. Integrate relevant ideas from all required course texts, the videos by Corey et al.,and two scholarly research articles about group counseling in a meaningful way. Although you may use first person in this paper, it must otherwise be in current APA format and include a title page, running head, abstract, and a reference page. The paper must be submitted as a Word document and be well written; well organized; and free of grammar, spelling, or other writing errors. In the paper’s introductory paragraph, identify the group you attended and the number of participants at each meeting. Then, address the following topics using these headings:

Content and Process

Give a concise description of the topics or themes of the meetings you attended and how the content was incorporated. Discuss the appropriateness of the content and the effectiveness of how it was processed. Provide specific details and examples from the meetings as needed, but do not disclose confidential or identifiable information about group members.

Group Dynamics and Participants

Describe the atmosphere and dynamics of the group, what developmental stage it was in, the level of participation, and how you think members benefitted from this group. (You may find chapter 16 of the Forsyth text helpful for this section.)

Leadership Behaviors

Describe the leadership styles and skills that were used and discuss to what extent and in what ways you think they were appropriate and effective. Describe specific challenges you observed and how the leader(s) handled them.

Application and Conclusion

Reflect on your learning and the most significant takeaways from this experience. If you were leading this group, what would you do differently? How did the meetings promote or contradict a biblical view of persons? Were ethical guidelines for group counseling adhered to or violated? End your paper with a concluding thought.
