· Select one genetic influence and one environmental influence on fetal development and think about how these influences might impact each other.

Discussion: Environmental and Genetic Impact on Fetal Development

Both environmental and genetic influences impact fetal development. Some substances (e.g., folic acid, hormones, etc.) have the biggest influence at sensitive periods during gestation. Early in gestation, when neurological development is at its peak, folic acid is most important. Hormones, such as androgen and estrogen, are necessary for external genital differentiation between 9 and 12 weeks of gestation. Prenatal alcohol exposure, however, can impact fetal growth at any time during gestation. On the other hand, environmental influences such as maternal genetics, nutrition, health, and immunization can have a positive impact on fetal development, mitigating the impact of substances and other negative influences. In addition to environmental influences, you must also consider the impact of genetic influences. Genes determine not only an individual’s physical features at birth—they also contribute to hormonal processes throughout the lifespan. The interaction of environmental influences and genetic influences impacts the development of a fetus.

For this Discussion, you will examine environmental and genetic influences on fetal development.

To prepare for this Discussion:

· Select one genetic influence and one environmental influence on fetal development and think about how these influences might impact each other.

By Day 4

Post a brief description of the genetic influence and the environmental influence you selected. Then, explain how the environmental influence might positively or negatively affect the development of a fetus with the genetic influence you selected. Be specific and provide examples. Use your Learning Resources to support your post. Use proper APA format and citations.

Essay Question:

Under what conditions does a person obey authority, who commands actions that go against his or her own conscience?

Incorporate the studies of Stanley Milgram, Philip Zimbardo, and (optional) Solomon Asch.

Essay Resources:

1) Milgram Journal Article (1963). SLATE under “Content” – “Major Assignment”

2) All of the video links. SLATE under “Content” – “Major Assignment”

3) Chapter 12 of your textbook

4) Choose 1 of the 3 Zimbardo Journal Articles provided. SLATE under “Content” – “Major Assignment”

5) Any additional resources you wish to investigate

Things to consider:

1) Many of us believe that we are independent enough to never go against our moral code to the extreme, regardless of the

pressure put on us.

– Please consider that none of the participants in the Stanley Milgram experiment were under any physical or violent restraints;

why did they continue to go along?

– Were they in the majority or the minority? According to Milgram, is this a universal constant across time and culture?

2) Consider the Zimbardo experiment: Why did the “good guards” conform to the situation and look the other way? Why did the

prisoners commit degrading acts against each other on command by the guards?

3) Incorporating real world examples can never hurt. Any examples like Abu Ghraib prison, the holocaust, the genocide in

Rwanda etc. Unfortunately, there are many examples of atrocity in human history.

4) Shifting of responsibility from the individual to the authority figure is a key theme.

– Do those who obey have unique personality traits?

– What role do you think symbols may have played in behaviour? (Scientist in the white coat; guard with sunglasses; chain on

prisoners’ leg etc.)

5) Is all obedience destructive? What is the significance of the bystander effect with regards to this theme?

Reflect on this week’s video, Out of the Mouths of Babes. Which language development theory does this video emphasize, and how can you tell?

Discussion Prompt 1

The Developmental Debate on Gender Identification

There is debate among developmental theorists as to what influences thoughts and behavior related to gender. For example, what influences a child to play with a doll versus a truck, or what influences a child to engage in active play versus passive play? Do we make these choices because of innate desires determined by biological factors, or is it because we have become socially conditioned to make certain choices? Review and identify the positions that developmental theorists take regarding the influences of gender, and describe what you believe influences gender identity most. Elaborate on your answer.

Discussion Prompt 2

Learning Language

Some experts emphasize the importance of adult reinforcement of early speech, others suggest that language learning is innate, biologically wired, while others believe it to be a biproduct of social impulses. Reflect on this week’s video, Out of the Mouths of Babes. Which language development theory does this video emphasize, and how can you tell? To support your answer, provide an example of one of the experiments conducted and explain how it fits in to the learning theory process you identified. What position do you take on the matter of language acquisition, and based on that position, would you advocate that parents read to children even before they start to talk? Explain your rationale.

Answers for each discussion  must be more that 125 words
