Describe the quality of your working relationship with your colleague.

Collaboration is a key part of social work practice. Most MSW professionals engage in these processes during the postgraduate practice years that each state requires before their licensing moves from supervised to independent status. Even beyond those requirements, peer consultation and collaboration are key aspects of most social work practice settings.

For this Assignment, your Instructor has paired you with a consultation colleague. Imagine that you and your colleague are working with the client featured in the case study your Instructor assigned. Your task is to provide a diagnosis and present your findings in the Week 7 Discussion.

Your diagnosis can come from any part of the DSM-5, so frequent communication and research with your colleague may be needed. Your colleague is there to help you think out, consult on, challenge, research, and polish your process before you record and post your own final analysis of this case in Week 7.

The collaboration that begins in this Assignment is intended to provide a safe venue for developing your differential diagnosis and case discussion skills with your colleague. This week you meet with your assigned partner at least once via Collaborate Ultra and begin considering the assigned case. In this Assignment, you describe that meeting and any initial analysis of the case.

To prepare:

  • Using the case study provided to you by your instructor.
  • Consult the Case Collaboration Meeting Guidelines document found in the Learning Resources.
  • Read ahead to the Week 7 Discussion instructions so that you can plan and reflect accordingly.

Note: In the Week 7 Discussion, you make your final findings presentation as an individual, not with your partner.

By Day 7

Submit a 1- to 2-page paper in which you describe your team meeting. In your write-up, make sure to address the following:

  1. Describe the quality of your working relationship with your colleague.
  2. Critically reflect on strengths of collaborative relationship and areas for improvement.
  3. Describe your case in 100–150 words.
  4. Identify the red flags in your case study to be further evaluated.
  5. Outline your and your partner’s plan for further research and consultation, identifying specific tasks that you are each doing in this regard.
  6. Is there a chief complaint in the case? If so, what is it?
  7. Are there any medical or substance problems that could account for symptoms? What are they? What factors should you consider when ruling these problems in or out?
  8. Identify four possible mental disorders with the strongest relevance to your case. What spectra are they are on? What other issues (if any) in the case might need further research?
  9. Make a plan for further researching your four diagnostic possibilities and any related issues. You are expected to use peer-reviewed journals in the Walden Library.

Briefly state whether the method that aligned with your natural observation tendency was a surprise to you.  Why or why not?

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed in your paper:

  1. Purpose of the Program Evaluation: Describe the purpose of a program evaluation in evidence-based practice. How does it support the profession?
  2. Introduction to the Case Study: Considering the provided data set, address the goal of this program evaluation.
  3. Review Summary of the Data
    1. Identify what kind of data is being used. Is the proposed evaluation qualitative or quantitative in nature?
    2. Determine if the design reflects an ethically and culturally competent evaluation. Is the data representative of the culture of the population
      being evaluated?
    3. Identify the patterns or trends. What does the data tell you?
  4. Summary
    1. Describe the results of the evaluation.
    2. Determine if the program is effective. Why or why not?
    3. Identify a future improvement for the clinical program that is being evaluated.

example :Here is a guide you may use to develop your assignment:

Introduction

Set the Stage. If you go into the community to carry out your assignment, explain a general description of the setting and what you observed. If you use the video link, identify the time stamp of the section of the video you used for your observation before you describe what you are observing.

Nature of the Observation

Comment specifically on whether you paid closer attention to individuals or groups; specifically, state to what degree you were curious about what was going on with individuals and their personal experiences in the moment. Give detailed examples.  Report what you noticed and whether you tended to focus more or less on what was going on with people in relation to others. Give detailed examples.

Connect to Research Method

Consider whether your natural tendency was to observe individuals or groups.  Were you more interested in the interests and motivations of individuals or what was going on with sub sets of the group and the interaction of the members? Describe what your own process was when you made your observation.  Based on the answer, explain whether your process was more quantitative in nature (objectively considering relationships or differences between and among the people/groups you were observing) or more qualitative in nature (with a subjective focus on contextual understanding).

Summary

Briefly state whether the method that aligned with your natural observation tendency was a surprise to you.  Why or why not?

How might you communicate the needs of vulnerable populations to policy makers who may not share your views about the need for services?

Discussion 1: Evidence-Based Interventions Used in National Traumatic Events

The DSM-5 task force added a section dedicated to trauma and stress. With an increased exposure to traumatic events, more individuals are exhibiting symptoms related to trauma exposure. Experiencing any of these events can result in an individual’s suffering from a trauma or stressor-related disorder.

For this Discussion, read the DSM-5 section on trauma and stressor-related disorders, in particular the articles on PTSD by Van der Kolk (2005) and Agaibi and Wilson (2005). Then search the literature for a study related to a national traumatic event and an evidence-based intervention used to treat those suffering from trauma and stressor-related issues associated with it.

· Post a brief description of the event, including a summary of how it affected the individuals involved.

· What are some psychosocial issues that needed to be addressed following this event? Identify an intervention that was implemented to address one of the psychosocial issues.

· Discuss the effectiveness of this intervention as stated in the article. What are some of the implications for social work in connection with traumatic events?

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Small Group Discussion:
Presenting Policy Proposals

Policy practitioners should know that being forewarned is being forearmed. You should know how to diagnose an audience, develop a persuasive strategy, have a “tactics tool bag” for dealing with difficult or expert audiences, and know how to develop non-confrontational communication methods with audiences when necessary. In short, you need to know how to skillfully defend the creative policy proposal you are about to present and how to talk to policy makers who may not be interested in the issues you are presenting.

In this Small Group Discussion, you explore and analyze strategies and ideas for presenting policy proposals.

To Prepare: Think about strategies you can use to persuade others who might not share the same concerns about your issues or your policy proposals. Think about how you might defend your position on an issue or a policy and get them to agree with your perspective. Review Chapter 9 of your text, paying special attention to the section entitled “Combative Persuasion in Step 5 and Step 6” from pages 286-292.

Post your responses to the following question presented for your small group discussion:

· Policy advocates sometimes find themselves discussing the needs of vulnerable populations with less-than-sympathetic groups of policy makers. Vulnerable populations might include families living in poverty, individuals with histories in the criminal justice system, or groups who have recently immigrated. How might you communicate the needs of vulnerable populations to policy makers who may not share your views about the need for services?

Be sure to support your post with specific references to this week’s resources. If you are using additional articles, be sure to provide full APA-formatted citations for your references.

Wiki Part 4: Online Resources

Locating online resources for a client can be overwhelming. There is such an abundance of websites, blogs, wikis, and social networking sites that offers resources to many different populations. As a clinician, it is important for you to determine which resources are evidence-based, appropriate for the population, and easily accessible.

To prepare for your Wiki, read the Wiki Assignment Instructions document located in the resources. Then locate 5–7 online resources for those living with a mental disorder.

For this Assignment, write a 400-word wiki, being sure to use proper APA format for any citations.

Your wiki should focus on F40.00 Agoraphobia mental disorder. Include the following (in the form of URLs, physical locations, and contact information) in your entry:

· Agencies, organizations, and non-profits that offer information and resources to individuals living with F40.00 Agoraphobia

· Workshops, conferences, and suggested readings pertaining to F40.00 Agoraphobia

· Experts in the field and their locations

· Studies that offer more insight into interventions for F40.00 Agoraphobia

Leadership Reflection Paper

Step 1:Chose a leader in your prospective career field to interview. He or she should be someone who is respected and viewed as an effective and/or exemplary leader in their organization or field. The leader must be preapproved by your instructor.

Step 3:From the list below, choose at least four questions you would like to ask your leader. You are also required to create three of your own questions, specific to that leader or field. Make sure your questions are open-ended and address the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership

·  How did you enter your career field?

I’ve always know that I was called to help people and I’ve always worked in some form of counselor or advocacy role.  However, it was not until I volunteered with a local transitional housing program in 2003 that I fully began to understand the overwhelming desire to help others.  From there I begin to work toward the education that would not only qualify me to succeed in counseling and social work, but give me the direct tools help.

·  What were some of the biggest challenges?

Two of the biggest challenges I have found in this field are remembering to push back that your client will help themselves and not become a crutch; and the fact that funding or the lack of can be an issue when attempting to assist clients.

·  What is your educational background?

I have a BS in Psychology & Social Services, a Masters in Divinity & Biblical Counseling, a Masters in Social Work (with a concentration in Clinical Practice/Mental Health), a Doctoral in Ministry & Biblical Counseling and I am currently working on a PhD in Social Work (Family Studies & Intervention)

·  How important is networking?
Networking opens doors to community relationships and resources.  Networking should not be looked at as an ultimate personal gain, but one that will bring significant outcome for your agency and the population that your agency serves.  Networking is important because we don’t and can’t hold all the answers, but networking allows us access to each other and ultimately brings all answers together.

·  What steps/advice do you recommend for those entering the field?

Examine your heart, examine your intentions, and always remember that this field is about others.  I would suggest to them to remember that you may have clients that have similar situations and circumstances, but every client is different and that they should be received and treated different. I also would say “please, please do your best to take care of yourself”, self-care is vital to endurance in this field.

·  What strengths do you believe you possess as a leader? Weaknesses?

I am a woman of great faith and I know that is a strength that continues to pull me through to accomplish what I have and what I will in the future. I would say that another strength is my love for God’s people and my drive to be a help to them.  My weakness I would have to say is that as much as much as I preach self-care, I am the worst at self-care.

·  What are three to four actions you believe are essential to enable others to be successful?

1). Believe in what God said you can do.

2). Education and the desire to remain teachable.

3). Never give up and never underestimate your ability.

·  What advice do you have for building relationships and trust in an organization?

I firmly believe in team building activities and setting aside time for team retreats.  I also believe that the more an agency pulls together in studying the word of God, that agency will work together as a unit more.  However, most agencies don’t allow for such things, so I would have to say that an organization must be proactive in the pursuit of building relationships with each other.  Trust takes time and that time is found in following through and being consistent.

Step 4:Conduct your interview using a recording device or taking effective notes. Include the date, time, and location of your interview.

What you will turn in:three original questions, notes from interview (questions and answers), and reflection assignment. Also, be prepared to share your interview and reflection with other learners in this class.
