what other diagnoses did you consider and why (List 3); (4) list three (3) short-term treatment goals that you would outline in this client’s treatment plan;

Create a five-minute presentation that meets the previously mentioned goals. Be sure to identify at least two different theories from your reading that support your presentation. Discuss the theories as they relate to your intended audience and how they can help your intended audience to better serve individuals with dyslexia.

PSY 540 Short Presentation Guidelines and Rubric

Overview:

Twice during this course you will assume the role of a psychology professional in an applied setting and apply theories to suggest solutions to contemporary problems through a short presentation. The purpose of these presentations is to help you identify gaps in and propose improvements for professional disciplines based on the strengths and limitations of human cognitive systems while assessing foundational theories of cognitive psychology for the irrelevance to real-world issues.

Short presentations should be approximately five minutes in length and should be directed towards someone with limited or no background knowledge of psychological concepts or terminology. Because of this, you will want to explain relevant terms and concepts as you work through your presentation.

Be sure to identify the group your presentation is intended for as well as the group that will most benefit from your proposed strategies. Additionally, be sure to appropriately use professional terms and theories.

Your presentation can use a platform of your choosing. Potential example platforms include:

•PowerPoint

•Prezi

•Jing

•Webcam video recordings

•Describe your rationale for this diagnosis including other diagnoses that could be ruled out.

•Case Study: Sam  Sam meets criteria for the second most commonly diagnosed disorder, thereby making it one with which you will need to be very familiar. Address the following using headings to match content in each bullet point. •Name the diagnosis and provide the ICD code. •Describe your rationale for this diagnosis including other diagnoses that could be ruled out. •If Sam and his parents come to treatment for family counseling, explain how you would go about determining the identified patient (IP) since a diagnosis will be required for insurance reimbursement.

Case Study:

Sam   Sam R. is a 16-year-old African American high school student. Just over two months ago he moved to a new town with his parents and younger sister due to his father’s promotion and job transfer. Sam’s old high school included a mix of students from many racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. At his new school, there are few African American students and Sam feels like an outsider. Sam has always been a quiet and serious person. Although he usually has one or two close friends, he feels awkward trying to start conversations with others and has never mixed easily in large groups. A good deal of activity at this new school takes place around sports and student government; two areas Sam has little interest in. Sam also feels unprepared for the level of work that is expected of him at this school, particularly the emphasis placed on presenting oral reports and participating in debates in front of the class. He becomes embarrassed and tongue-tied when he has to speak in front of others. Sam often “gets sick” on the day of an oral report so he can stay home from school, and he is worried this will impact his grades.
