What rationales does learning psychology offer us to explain why we may believe we do not need to learn new things?

ATTACHED IS RESOURCE TO ASSIST WITH ASSIGNMENT

Address two of the three scenarios (your choice) listed below. (Clearly use headings in your post to designate which options you are addressing.)

Option A: A recent psychology graduate named Kaylynn is currently seeking a career position with the local community college as a marketing director.

  • How can her understanding of learning psychology support this position?
  • How can she express these acquired skills most clearly in her interview?
  • If you were Kaylynn, what knowledge or skills would you be sure to include? Please provide a rationalization.

Option B: The retail department store that Nikky, a psychology graduate, works for, is changing how they address customer service, and over the next several weeks the store will be requiring all sales personnel to attend training sessions. As a sales manager, Nikky has heard her employees make comments reflecting their frustration with this requirement; they believe they do an adequate job, so why change what they are currently doing?

  • How can Nikky, based on what she knows about the psychology of learning, encourage the employees to be more open to learning the new procedures?
  • What rationales does learning psychology offer us to explain why we may believe we do not need to learn new things?
  • Again, based on this area of psychology, how might the attitude of the employees affect their ability to effectively learn, even if they were to attend?

1. The following paragraph has been formatted incorrectly according to APA formatting rules. Identify and describe 4 errors in the following paragraph:

Smith, Jones, & Terry 2008 investigated the effects of death-qualification on jurors’ confidence. A “death-qualified” juror is one who is willing to give the death penalty. 60 college students were randomly assigned to one of 2 different conditions. In both conditions, participants completed a short questionnaire that asked them whether they would or would not be willing to give the death penalty. In the first condition, participants reported aloud their response, and those participants who were not willing to give the death penalty were asked to leave the experiment. In the other condition, participants handed in their response on a written survey. Again, the researchers told participants who were not willing to give the death penalty to leave. After participants unwilling to give the death penalty left, the researchers told the remaining 45 “death-qualified” participants to fill out surveys regarding how confident they felt in their original death-qualification answers. The researchers found that, “participants in the verbal response condition were more confident in their death qualification status than participants in the written response condition”. The researchers concluded that making public commitments about death-qualification status makes participants more confident in their death-qualified status.

Assignment 2: Discussion—Comparison of Editorials

In this assignment, you will identify and explore your intuitive critical-thinking strategies. It is the starting point to developing the skills to analyze information critically.

Research methods of identifying strong and weak arguments using your textbook and the Argosy University online library resources. Be sure to cover the following:

  • Identify premises and conclusions
  • Discuss whether or not an inference is warranted
  • Determine whether arguments utilize inductive or deductive reasoning

For this assignment, your facilitator will assign you one of the following debates:

  • Debate 1: Should the “Ashley X” treatments have been permitted?
  • Debate 2: Is Osama Bin Laden’s death a decisive blow to Al Qaeda or an unmitigated victory against terrorism?

Each debate has two sets of articles for review. Your facilitator will assign you one of these sets.

Each set has two articles with two varying, but important, perspectives on the same subject. Be sure to read both articles in the set.

Debate 1:

These pairs of articles focus on the subject of “Ashley X,” a child with static encephalopathy who underwent radical surgical procedures to facilitate her care and, thereby, ostensibly improve her quality of life.

Set A

Set B

Debate 2

These pairs of articles focus on the subject of Osama Bin Laden’s death and the alleged implications his death are expected to have on matters of future Al Qaeda activity and international safety.

Set A

Set B

Respond to the following:

  • Identify and explain the strongest argument in each article.

Or

  • Identify and explain the weakest argument in each article.

Give reasons and examples from your research in support of your response.

Your initial response should be about 300–400 words in length, with at least one reference cited in APA format. Be sure to reply to at least two of your classmates using at least 75 words per response.

By Saturday, June 14, 2014, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, June 18, 2014, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Studies show that people in countries such as Japan and Korea tend to evaluate themselves critically in surveys; they tend to consider self as not necessarily hard-working. Explain the reasons for such cultural response bias.

Your responses must be supported and substantiated by the information discussed by the text authors. Outside sources may be used to support, not replace, the text material. Cite your work in APA format. All assignments MUST be typed, double-spaced, in APA style, and must be written at graduate level English.

Your response to each question should be 1 page. Your entire assignment should be 6 pages plus a title and reference page.

  1. Studies show that people in countries such as Japan and Korea tend to evaluate themselves critically in surveys; they tend to consider self as not necessarily hard-working. Explain the reasons for such cultural response bias.
  2. Native Americans and Alaska Natives report a higher prevalence of pain symptoms and painful conditions when compared with the general population of the United States. What is your understanding of these findings?

Do you think that creativity can be sparked when a person is exposed to a foreign culture?

  5. For years homosexuality was considered a mental illness in the United States. Is it still perceived as an illness today? Do you agree or disagree?
  6. Research shows that in Buddhist and Western societies may encourage two somewhat different types of motivation, namely “maximizing” and “satisfying.” Explain both briefly.
