Is there anything in this vignette that is unethical? Cite the relevant codes from the 2014 ACACode of Ethics and/or the 2010 ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors.

Counselors who work with children and adolescents often need to balance their clients’ or students’ rights, their own views of moral and ethical behavior, and the demands of ethical codes and state laws.

Choose one of the following vignettes:

  1. A 13-year-old boy describes himself as being gay and discloses he has been sexually intimate with his 17-year-old friend LeRoy for the past 3 months. He is worried he may have a sexually transmitted disease. He wants your advice and support but does not want you to tell his parents.
  2. A 17-year-old girl reveals she is 4 months pregnant and is terrified to tell her parents or the father of the child; she believes they will force her to keep the baby. The girl admits she has already contacted a couple she found on the Internet to discuss placing the baby for adoption when it is born. She wants your help with her mood as she has been very sad and depressed.
  3. A 16-year-old boy who has an underlying medical disorder that causes chronic pain reveals he has been receiving medical marijuana from his dad who has a medical marijuana card. He wants your help communicating with his teacher who feels he has been distant and sluggish in class.

Now, answer these questions:

  • Is there anything in this vignette that is illegal? Cite your state law.
  • Is there anything in this vignette that is unethical? Cite the relevant codes from the 2014 ACACode of Ethics and/or the 2010 ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors.
  • Is there anything in this vignette that conflicts with your personal beliefs? If so, discuss strategies to help you maintain your professional role and objectivity.

What forms of technology are most effective to facilitate development and learning in adolescents?

Teacher candidates will learn about typical adolescent behaviors and characteristics from an administrator and a practicing teacher. Speak with your instructor if there is the need to interview alternate professionals, if necessary.

Part 1: Interview

Contact an administrator or instructional coach and a practicing teacher for secondary grades 6-12 and arrange separate interviews. Speak with your instructor if there is the need to interview alternate professionals, if necessary.

Use the following points of discussion to guide your interview:

  1. Discuss characteristics of adolescence.
  2. What characteristics seem to change the most and why?
  3. What characteristics seem to never change?
  4. How does physical development influence the characteristics of adolescence?
  5. How does cognitive development influence the characteristics of adolescence?
  6. How do social and emotional relationships influence the adolescents?
  7. What technologies are most effective to facilitate learning in adolescents?

Part 2: Reflection

In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect on your interviews. How does each individual’s approach to development in adolescence promote growth for students with physical, cognitive, or socio-emotional needs? What forms of technology are most effective to facilitate development and learning in adolescents? Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice.

Discussion Spark – Week 1COLLAPSE

Are we, and our personalities, destined to be prisoners of our past? Personality developed from the Latin word ‘persona’ meaning mask. Are we simply wearing a mask of personalities? Does this mean our personalities are fixed? Why or why not? Are there determinants that lead to development, evolution, and change in our personalities? If so, what?

Please read your chapter, then respond with reflective, personal thought and support from learned information.

Discussion wk1

Discussion: Your Perspective on Personality

Why are people the way they are? Think about the number of times you have asked that question or some variation of it. You might be asking out of frustration or from admiration of a specific someone. It might be in reference to yourself. Wondering what shapes the way individuals feel, think, and behave is certainly a common question. It may be a question that links all human beings, perhaps from the time the first cave dweller confounded another!

There are answers to that question—in fact, more than one. As you may have noticed while reading the Learning Resources this week, there are multiple explanations for the development of personality, defined as psychological qualities that contribute to an individual’s enduring and distinctive patterns of feeling, thinking, and behaving. As you read, your own experiences with both the vast differences and the similarities among individuals may have made some explanations seem more plausible than others.

For this Discussion, you will review the factors that influence personality discussed in the Week 1 Learning Resources. You will consider the rationale for each factor and provide your views on which individual factor—or combination of factors—has the biggest impact on personality.

To prepare:

  • Review information in the Learning Resources related to each of the following factors that influence personality:
  • Genetic determinants
  • Environmental determinants
  • Culture
  • Social class
  • Family
  • Peers
  • Reflect on your experiences that can help in evaluating the impact of these factors on personality.
  • Consider arguments in the Learning Resources for each factor.
  • Consider the factor(s) you view as having the most influence and the least influence on personality development.
By Day 3

Post a response that includes the following:

  • Explain the single factor or combination of factors that you view as having the most influence on personality. Cite arguments from the Learning Resources in support of your chosen factor(s).
  • Identify a factor that you view as having the least impact on personality development and explain your reasoning.

Note: Be sure to support the responses within your initial Discussion post (and in your colleague reply) with information obtained from the assigned Learning Resources, including in-text citations and a reference list for sources used. For information regarding how your Discussion will be evaluated, please review the grading rubric located in the Course Information area of the course.

By Day 5

Respond to at least one of your colleagues in one or more of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing question and provide insight into how you would answer your question and why.
  • Ask a probing question and provide the foundation, or rationale, for the question.
  • Expand on your colleague’s posting by offering a new perspective or insight.
  • Agree with a colleague and offer additional (new) supporting information for consideration.
  • Disagree with a colleague by respectfully discussing and supporting a different perspective.

Support your reply to a colleague’s post with at least one reference (textbook or other scholarly, empirical resources). You may state your opinion and/or provide personal examples; however, you must also back up your assertions with evidence (including in-text citations) from the source and provide a reference.

Important Note: For all Discussions in this course, you are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleague’s postings. Begin by clicking on the “Post to Discussion” link and then select “Create Thread” to complete your inital post. Remember, once you click submit, you cannot delete or edit your own posts, and cannot post anonymously. Please check your post carefully before clicking Submit!

Assignment 1: Abortion Laws and Ethical Considerations

For social workers, the potential conflict between personal and professional ethics can be a source of great contention. Abortion is a highly politicized and contested topic. It is also one that reflects great diversity in terms of opinion, personal and professional ethics, and legal stances varying from state to state. For this Assignment, consider the topic of abortion, the laws of abortion that exist in the state or country in which you reside, and your own opinions on the topic. Also consider the relationship between your personal and professional ethical stance on the topic and how that may affect your interactions with clients.

  1. Submit a 2-page paper that explains what you discovered about the laws of abortion in Georgia and why this information might be shared with clients.
  2. Further, explain your personal stance on abortion and how your ethical entanglements might impact your work with clients given the professional social worker ethic.
  3. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer and use minimum of 2-3 references.

Assignment 2: Journal Entry: From Margin to Center

It can be uncomfortable to realize that you have come either from a place of oppression or privilege. Individuals seldom use these terms to describe themselves or others. However, oppression and privilege impact every aspect of people’s lives. As you consider your own place in society, consider your emotional attachment to where you see yourself within these social constructs. Consider the assumptions made about you based on how you look, the clothes you wear, or the car you drive. Consider how the social construction of gender and race can impact your work as a social worker.

  1. Submit a 2 page journal entry in which you analyze your reactions to the social construction of power, racial, and gender characteristics.
  2.  Explain how race and gender interact with privilege and oppression.
  3.  Identify and analyze which characteristics of oppressed or privileged individuals with which you identify. (African American)

Note: In this course you will be asked to provide journal entries on various topics. The intent of the journals is for you to reflect on some of the more difficult topics we address in this course. It should be a safe and confidential outlet for you to explore a little more deeply your thoughts and emotions surrounding that week’s topic. For this week, explore your thoughts and feelings around social construction of power, race, and gender. Quite often prior to beginning a social work program, students do not consider how privilege and power on the one side and oppression on the other side impact people every day. Discuss how this may be a new topic for you and give your personal responses to sometimes very difficult discussion.
