List of Tests by Type.

In this unit, you are introduced to the clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and neuropsychology branches of psychology. While these three specialty areas share overlap with goals for clients and the tools they employ in the process of assessment, they each have unique content knowledge and skill they acquired through training and provide differentiated roles and services. Subsequently, the referring concern and the needs of an individual will likely indicate which professional may be best suited to complete the assessment.

In Units 6 through 9, you have studied different applications of tests and measurements in a variety of settings and specialty areas. Regardless of the specialization, it is likely that at some time, a psychologist will have a client with one of the referral concerns including possible neurological problems. In this unit, you read about psychologists using a standard battery to gather information on an individual from a variety of tests and instruments as a means of screening for a neurological deficit. A minimum amount of testing for an adequate neuropsychological screening includes an intelligence test, a personality test, and a perceptual, motor, or memory test.

In this discussion, you will refer to the following case study to answer the questions in Part 1 and Part 2 of this activity.

Andy was referred to you, a psychologist.

Name: Andrew “Andy” Davis.

Age: 6 years, 0 months.

Mother: Emily Davis, single parent.

Sibling: Molly.

Recent changes: Relocation to a smaller house, father abandoned family.

Referral concerns (reported by mother): Frequent intense imaginative play, significantly reduced social interactions, talks to self in his room, destroys toys (for example, rips arms of dolls), falls frequently, and concerns that he fell down stairs (with no open head injury) at the new house (that is, Andy reported falling down and off staircase railing).

Part 1

Based on this referral information, what would be the three tests you would include in a standard battery for screening purposes that include neurological concerns? You may use, as a guide, the same test list that was provided to you in Unit 2. You are allowed to choose tests outside of those on the list. This task will allow you to review tests covered in earlier units of this course, as well as some that are introduced in this unit. However, remember to address a minimum of three recommended areas of assessment for a screening of this type. Be sure to take into consideration age range appropriate for the tests and instruments you select. Then, provide an explanation for using each instrument and how it connects to your working hypothesis on Andy and his mother’s concerns.

Part 2

You complete your evaluation using the three (or more) tests in your standard battery and obtain signs signaling that a more thorough neuropsychological evaluation is recommended. Subsequently, Andy is referred to Dr. Woody Pride, a neuropsychologist. Dr. Pride decides to administer Andy the Brief Neuropsychological Cognitive Examination (BNCE) published by WPS since it can be administered in one sitting and reports that it minimizes reading skills to complete it.

Based on this information from Dr. Pride, and after conducting your own research on this test selection, determine if this is an appropriate test to obtain additional data on Andy regarding neuropsychological concerns. If it is appropriate, then state that and provide your rationale for supporting this as a test selection. If it is not appropriate, then state that and provide your rationale for rejecting this as a test selection. Finally, regardless if you find the BNCE appropriate or not for Andy and the referring concerns, identify a second neuropsychological test that would be highly recommended for its use with Andy (you may select one from the list provided you in Unit 2, or another neuropsychological test battery).

As a test user, identify any AERA standards regarding The Rights and Responsibilities of Test Users, which are implicated in this case study of Andy Davis.

W6Q1 The Four Dimension of Care

Describe the four dimensions of care and why they are each very important. Explain which dimension is most important to you and why. Provide an example. As a mental health worker, what advice would you give to a caregiver of someone who was chronically ill and dying?

Physical (the body) – to live, move, and breath

Physical self-care involves ensuring an overall healthy lifestyle that includes eating healthy, drinking lots of water, and getting plenty of exercise. Consider de-cluttering your home and office so that you have a feeling of spaciousness and manageability. Take time away from computers, TV, and your smartphone (sedentary lifestyles are a health issue). Enjoy moments to rest and replenish.

Pause & Reflect: What are you currently doing for your physical self-care?

Emotional (heart) – to love, care, and be in relationship with yourself and others

Emotional self-care might include setting clear boundaries on your time and energy. Engage emotional boundaries within helping relationships, surrounding yourself with positive people and affirmative and inspiring messages. Address any issues or problems so that they don’t build up. Give and receive love, kindness, and support. Spend time with people you care about and who care about you.

Pause & Reflect: What are you currently doing for your emotional self-care?

Psychological (the mind) – to learn, think, and grow

Psychological self-care activities might include personal and professional development. Give attention to things that are in your control (your sphere of influence). Take time for personal reflection. Notice your inner experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Cultivate self-awareness through things such as journaling, getting feedback from others, meditation, coaching/counseling, and consultation or supervision – places where you have the opportunity to grow, learn, and reflect.

Pause & Reflect: What are you currently doing for your psychological self-care?

Spiritual (the spirit) – to connect with essence, purpose, and meaning

Spiritual self-care might include prayer or meditation. You may want to visualize, practice gratitude, spend time in nature, and be aware of the non-material aspects of your life. Identify what is meaningful to you in your work and life. Practice mindfulness and being present in the moment.

Pause & Reflect: What are you currently doing for your spiritual self-care?

Discuss the limitations the article identified with the sample and how those limitations affect the reliability or credibility.

Assignment: Research Design and Sampling

Using the empirical research article that your instructor approved in the Week 5 assignment, ask yourself: “Is this a quantitative research article or a qualitative research article?” Remember, in quantitative research, the emphasis is on measuring social phenomenon because it is assumed that everything can be observed, measured, and quantified. On the other hand, in qualitative research, it is assumed that social phenomenon cannot be easily reduced and broken down into concepts that can be measured and quantified. Instead, there may be different meanings to phenomenon and experiences. Often in qualitative research, researchers use interviews, focus groups and observations to gather data and then report their findings using words and quotations.

Consider how these different methods affect the sampling design and recruitment strategy, and ask yourself how the recruitment of research participants will affect the findings.

For this Assignment, submit a 3-4 page paper. Complete the following:

  • Read your selected empirical research article, and identify whether the study is a quantitative or qualitative study. Justify the reasons why you believe it is a quantitative or qualitative study. (Your instructor will indicate to you if you are correct in identifying the research design. This will point you to whether you will use the “Quantitative Article and Review Critique” or the “Qualitative Article and Review Critique” guidelines for the final assignment in week 10.)
  • Using the empirical research article, focus on the sampling method in the study and begin to evaluate the sampling method by answering the following:
    • Describe the sampling methods in your own words (paraphrase, do not quote from the article).
    • Describe the generalizability or the transferability of the research finding based on the sampling method.
    • Discuss the limitations the article identified with the sample and how those limitations affect the reliability or credibility.
    • Explain one recommendation you would make to improve the sampling plan of the study that would address these limitations in future research.

Describe, in the notes section, the best practice in more detail, and elaborate as needed on your analysis of how the best practice could help you navigate the relationship and conflict.

Create a PowerPoint presentation of at least 12 slides that could be given in a professional context. The presentation will analyze a simulated case study and demonstrate the use of professional guidelines and tools to work out a strategy for dealing with an ethical dilemma related to a cultural conflict as well as analyze the usefulness of those guidelines and tools.

Note: You are strongly encouraged to complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.

Ethics and multiculturalism are intimately related. Whatever your specialization or career goals, in order to behavior ethically, one must be multiculturally sensitive and maintain multicultural competence as part of lifelong learning.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Apply ethical principles and standards to ethical dilemmas.
    • Ethical Concerns: Apply ethical standards to ethical concerns pertaining to the case scenario.
  • Competency 2: Employ models of ethical reasoning and ethical decision making.
    • Ethical Theories: Analyze ethical theories and justify application of one theory in an attempt to resolve the ethical dilemma in the case scenario.
    • Ethical Decision Making: Apply steps in an ethical decision-making model to an ethical dilemma in the case scenario.
    • Solution: Design a viable solution for an ethical problem.
  • Competency 3: Evaluate multicultural influences on ethics for psychologists.
    • Case Overview: Create a scenario (based on one’s psychology specialization) that presents a cultural conflict and ethical dilemma.
    • Best Practices: Analyze how best practices cited in scholarly research articles could help a cultural conflict.
  • Competency 4: Analyze multicultural issues in psychology and the importance of multicultural competency in the profession.
    • Cultural Difference: Analyze how cultural differences could contribute to a conflict.
    • Biases: Describe one’s past or present biases toward others of different cultures.
  • Competency 5: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for members of the psychological professions.
    • Communication: Write clearly, with correct spelling, grammar, syntax, and good organization, following APA style standards.

Preparation

  • Create a case involving an ethical dilemma and cultural conflict(s) that could occur in your psychology specialization. It is recommended that you base the case study for this assessment on the one you developed in Assessment 2, with revisions in response to the feedback you received from faculty. However, you may create an entirely new case study that meets the criteria for this assessment. Again, while your case will be fictional, it must be entirely believable and realistic based on your psychology specialization.
  • Download and use the Combined Case Study Template, linked in Required Resources. Do not submit a paper for this assessment. Papers will not be graded. You will complete this assessment by replacing all language that is enclosed with brackets […] in the PowerPoint with your own words. As in the previous assessments, you may enhance the design of the presentation to make it more effective. Again, links to tips for using PowerPoint and designing effective presentations are provided in Suggested Resources.

The Presentation

  1. Title slide: On the first slide of the PowerPoint:
    • Enter a descriptive title of approximately 5–15 words that concisely communicates the heart of the case study. It should stir interest while maintaining professional decorum.
    • Enter your name, and a job title and organization that would fit with your case study.
  2. Case Study Overview slides: Provide the briefest possible narrative description of the professional conflict in the case. Additional supporting details and references can be added on the notes section of the slide. The overview should include:
    • The professional setting of the case, based on your psychology specialization.
    • The relationship that exists between you and the other individual(s), agency/business, or institution involved. Some possible examples may be:
      • Professor—Student.
      • Therapist—Patient.
      • Colleague—Colleague.
      • Consultant—Business.
      • Clinical Supervisor—Student intern.
      • Administrative Supervisor—Employee.
    • A very brief summation of an ethical dilemma involving cultural conflicts.
  3. Cultural Differences slides: On the table provided, list side by side the main cultural identities from the Hays model, relevant to the conflict in the case, of yourself and another individual, agency/business, or institution in the case.
    • If more than one individual, agency/business, or institution is involved in the case, make a copy of this slide for each one, to compare yourself to all others involved.
    • In the notes section:
      • Identify common concerns with each cultural identity. Be careful to avoid using stereotypes.
      • Analyze how cultural differences contributed to the conflict in this case.
  4. Relevant Biases: Identify two relevant biases you have or had, and at least one strategy for improving your cultural competency around each of those biases.
    • Note: This slide may be reused from Assessment 2, but if you received suggestions for improving it, be sure to revise it.
  5. Ethical Concerns slides: Bullet point the three or more ethical concerns in the case and apply one or more ethical standard to each concern. Additional supporting details and references can be added in the notes section.
  6. Comparison of Ethical Theories slides: In the first row of the table provided, enter the names of two ethical theories that you think would be the most appropriate for the situations in the case. In the following rows, enter comparisons of relevant features of the two theories. In the notes section, evaluate which theory provides a more functional framework for your case and explain why. (Note that ethical theories and ethical decision-making models are two different things. Please make sure that you are applying, comparing, and contrasting two ethical theories).
  7. Ethical Decision-Making Model slides:
    • Identify each step in the model. Under each step of the model, apply it to your case.
    • Incorporate multicultural issues presented in the case study within the selected ethical decision-making model.
    • Add copies of this slide as needed, and combine steps on the slides as necessary or appropriate. In the notes section, write out supporting narrative details for your bullet points. (Note that ethical theories and ethical decision-making models are two different things. Please make sure that are applying the steps of the ethical decision-making model to your case).
  8. Best Practices When Working With [Cultural Identity] slide:
    • Identify a best practice for working with a cultural identity in this case and cite the source below. Citation requirements: You must cite best practices from at least three scholarly research articles. You may cite reputable source from Web sites, books, textbooks, and suggested resources as well, but these will not count toward the three required scholarly research references.
    • Analyze, briefly, how the best practice could help you navigate this particular relationship and conflict.
    • Describe, in the notes section, the best practice in more detail, and elaborate as needed on your analysis of how the best practice could help you navigate the relationship and conflict.
    • Note: This slide may be reused from Assessment 2, but if you received suggestions for improving it, be sure to revise it.
  9. Proposed Resolution slide: Use bullet points to summarize your proposed resolution to the ethical dilemmas in the case. In the notes section, write out supporting narrative details for your bullet points.
  10. References slides: Use current APA style and formatting guidelines.

Other Requirements

  • Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • Format: Use the Combined Case Study Template provided in the Required Resources. Use current APA style and formatting guidelines as applicable to this assessment.
  • Resources: 10 scholarly research articles that can include those used in previous assessments.
  • Length of PowerPoint: A minimum of 12 slides.
