You must research potential resources available to parents who need assistance with a child afflicted with social, cognitive, emotional or physical problems related to their “lot in life.” This section is worth 20 points.

THE DEVELOPING PERSON

Students will be randomly assigned to the position of an individual who is dealing with a particular set of life circumstances and are asked to reflect on how their lot in life would affect development.  For this assignment, you will be required to research a particular lot in life and then prepare a 2-3 page written summary of your findings.

“Lots in Life”

  1. Your newborn daughter was prenatally exposed to excess testosterone; as a result, she has masculine-appearing genitals
  2. Your adopted son suffers from fetal alcohol syndrome
  3. You learn that the mother of your adopted newborn is a heroin addict.
  4. Your 9 year old daughter has started her growth spurt early
  5. Your 15 year old son has not yet started his growth spurt
  6. Your unmarried 16 year old daughter announces that she is pregnant
  7. Your partner is of a different race and you are expecting your first child
  8. Your child is born deaf

  10. Your 13 year old daughter announces that she is a lesbian
  11. Your 13 year old son announces that he does not feel like a boy and believes that he is a girl.

You are not allowed to change your topic. In the real world we often do not get to choose our “Lot in Life.” We must do the best that we can with the situation that we are in.

Written Summary Guidelines

Your written summary should be in your own words and not the words of another person.  Please do not copy passages word for word from the internet or your textbook. Please use your own words. You will receive a grade of zero (0) for text taken verbatim from other sources.

Your paper must include the following:

  1. Introduction: You must provide a short statement (2-3 sentences) describing your research topic and the significance of this topic. This opening statement is worth 5 points.

2.      Body:

    1. The body of your paper must include a discussion of how the child is

affected by at least three (3) of the following. Please be sure that you discuss issues that are relevant to your topic:

·   Socially,

·   Cognitively,

·   Emotionally

·    Physically

You can find much of this information in Chapter 8. You must also must you’re your topic to information provided in either Chapter 2: Biological Psychology or Chapter 4: Consciousness, whichever chapter has relevance for your topic. Papers that do not provide information from Chapter 8 and Chapter 2 or 4 will be heavily penalized.

Again, be sure to identify how the child might be affected socially, cognitively, emotionally and/or physically and then provide a detailed discussion of the consequences of the affliction.  20 points.

    1. For your hypothetical situation, you must also discuss how the parents may be affected. Please be detailed in this section. You must research potential resources available to parents who need assistance with a child afflicted with social, cognitive, emotional or physical problems related to their “lot in life.” This section is worth 20 points.

  1. Conclusion: You must provide a 2-3 sentence summary concluding statement. Summarize the important aspects of your essay. This section is worth 5 points.

Briefly discuss how you will continue to build rapport and shift your relational style in order to best align with the careseeker’s style (i.e., use DISC language) and current behavioral position (i.e., attending, blaming, or willing).

Meaning-Making Forum 2 (Week 5)

Meaning-Making Forums 1-4 are this course’s unique final project. Be fully engaged in Phase Two! After reviewing the readings, presentations, lecture notes, articles, and web-engagements, and previous assignments, artificially move your predetermined careseeker (i.e., Crossroads’ Careseekers: Bruce, Joshua, Brody, Justin, or Melissa) through Phase Two.

NOTE: These research-based forums require that you draw upon ALL of the course readings and learning activities to date, in order to substantively develop each phase in our Solution-based, Short-term, Pastoral Counseling (SbStPC) process.  Noticeably support each core assertion.

  • Rapport and Relational Alignment. Briefly discuss how you will continue to build rapport and shift your relational style in order to best align with the careseeker’s style (i.e., use DISC language) and current behavioral position (i.e., attending, blaming, or willing).
  • Phase Two Distinctive Features. Narrate movement of careseeker through Phase Two’s distinctive features (i.e., purpose, goal, chief aim, role/responsibility, use of guiding assumptions) and apply pertinent insights and techniques from ALL the readings, previous assignments, and the Bible.
  • Supportive Feedback Break. What portrait, definition(s), key thought(s), and/or assessment insight from the Quick Reference Guide might be utilized in the supportive feedback technique?
  • Phase Two Marker. Describe a marker that indicates you have collaboratively ‘imagineered” a picture of life without the problem. In what way does this marker indicate the careseeker is in a willing position and ready for Phase Three?
  • Food for Thought: When learning a new people skill or counseling technique, is it normal to “feel” awkward and fake?  Use at least 1 example and thoughtfully explain how this “feeling” might be normalized.

TIPS:

  • Carefully Follow Meaning-Making Forum Guidelines & Tips!
  • Make sure to use headings (5) so that the most inattentive reader may easily follow your thoughts.
  • Use the annotated outline approach. Bullets should have concise, complete, well-developed sentences or paragraphs.
  • Foster a “noble-minded” climate for investigating claims through well-supported core assertions (i.e., consider the validation pattern of the Bereans; Acts 17:11).  Noticeably support assertions to facilitate further investigation and to avoid the appearance of plagiarism.
  • Since you have the required materials (e.g., Masterpiece), abridge any related citations (Nichols, p. 12) and do not list the required source in a References’ section.
  • Secondary sources must follow current APA guidelines for citations and References.
  • Make every effort to prove that you care about the subject matter by proofreading to eliminate grammar and spelling distractions.

Post a paraphrase of the following passage from Walden’s Code of Conduct. Include a proper in-text citation in your paraphrase. Make sure to use your own words while preserving the meaning of the original passage.

The ability to paraphrase effectively is one of the fundamental skills required for effective academic writing. Paraphrasing shows you understand the source language and can restate it in your own words. Paraphrasing also helps you ensure originality in your writing.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the Week 3 Resources. Pay special attention to the webinars on paraphrasing and quoting. Also, study the noted sections of the APA manual so you can learn how to format citations properly.

By Day 3

Post a paraphrase of the following passage from Walden’s Code of Conduct. Include a proper in-text citation in your paraphrase. Make sure to use your own words while preserving the meaning of the original passage. Your paraphrase should ideally be the same length or shorter than the original passage. In addition to paraphrasing the passage, explain in one paragraph the strategy you used to paraphrase effectively.

“As an institution fundamentally  concerned with the free exchange of ideas, the university depends on the  academic integrity of each of its members. In the spirit of this free exchange,  students and instructors of Walden recognize the necessity and accept the  responsibility for academic integrity. A student who enrolls at the university  thereby agrees to respect and acknowledge the research and ideas of others in  his or her work and to abide by those regulations governing work stipulated by  the academic unit or academic program, and, in turn, the instructor” (Walden University, 2016.  para. 8).

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

By Day 5

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ postings in one of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing question.
  • Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
  • Offer and support an opinion.
  • Validate an idea with your own experience.
  • Make a suggestion.
  • Expand on your colleague’s posting.

All required and outside sources should be properly cited in your paper.

This assignment has two parts. In the first part,

  • Provide an overview of the trait model of personality in which you identify at least one principal theory and its theorist (i.e., Allport, Cattell, or Eysenck) associated with the model. (Please note that the trait model is more than just the big five—this part of the paper should cover the general history and evolution of the model.)
  • Compare and contrast the basic assumptions of the trait model and the psychodynamic model regarding the theorist’s explanations of personality development.
  • Use the scholarly sources you researched for this assignment as well as this week’s required sources to support your statements.

In the second part of your paper,

  • Describe each of the five traits included in the big five model:
    • extroversion,
    • agreeableness,
    • conscientiousness,
    • neuroticism, and
    • openness to experience.
    • (This section demonstrates your understanding of the theory, so do not just copy and paste the explanations provided on the Truity website.)
  • Reflect on your results from the test, on each of the five traits. (MY RESULTS ARE PROVIDED IN THE ATTACHMENTS!)
  • Use the scholarly sources you researched for this assignment as well as this week’s required sources to support your statements.
