Discuss in detail the risk factors and explanations for each of the following:  social, biological and psychological theories of criminal behavior.

No directly quoted material may be used in this project paper.

Resources should be summarized or paraphrased with appropriate in-text and Resource page citations.

You are working as a criminal justice research specialist assigned to a special crime reduction task force. The officials would like a report from you on three main theories as they relate to criminal behavior. The focused crimes are personal assault, robbery, burglary, and theft. While race and ethnicity are not factors, there may be other identifiable factors or theories that motivate or predict a personal propensity to criminal behavior.  Your assignment is to:

  1.  Discuss in detail the risk factors and explanations for each of the following:  social, biological and psychological theories of criminal behavior.
  2. Compare and contrast each of the theories, determining which is the most likely to be the primary contributor to criminal activity.
  3. Collectively, these comparisons must be supported by at least three (3) cited sources from the course instructional materials or outside scholarly sources.

(Note: “Scholarly” sources include articles from professional journals – See UMUC Library database—and other professional publications, textbooks, professional association sponsored websites, etc. Not included are blogs, commercial websites and/or anything from Wikipedia.)

Format:

1. A minimum of 2,000 and maximum of 2,500 words, not including cover page and references page.

2. The cover page should include the name and number of the course, the name of the student, title of the project and the date of submission.

3. The narrative composition is to be 12 pt. font, double spacing, with 1-inch margins.

4. Resources, including course materials, must be cited both in the narrative where appropriate and on a separate references page, using APA citation rules. (Note: APA format for materials collected from the Internet is required; the url address alone is unacceptable.)

5. At the instructor’s discretion, this project may be submitted to Turnitin or other service for verification of originality

As a none violent offender how did he end up in a maximum security prison? What do you feel about the images on bedsheet canvasses that created?

Discussion topic: Art and Prison

“How art and prison let us understand life’s complexities Prison”, by James Krims

“Jesse Krimes is a nonviolent drug offender who unwittingly became a spokesperson for the mass incarcerated prisoners we cannot see, choose not to see, and see inaccurately. Jesse brings to light the cracks of the prison system and the “purgatory” that inmates can experience in the penitentiary. He tells the story of how he used art to transcend the prison environment and share how prisoners experience the world. Creatively using the materials at his disposal, Jesse uncovers and reveals unfair societal norms. No one is simply good or bad; everyone is complex. In this talk, Jesse challenges how we see ourselves and interact with others.”

“Jesse Krimes is a visual artist who was indicted by the United States government, labeled a “drug kingpin,” and sentenced to a 70-month prison term. While incarcerated, Mr. Krimes established prison drawing, painting, and independent study art programs and worked collaboratively with his fellow inmates, in addition to maintaining an active independent studio practice. Krimes used art as a means to transcend and psychologically escape his confinement, including a 30’ x 15’ foot mural, which was digitally reproduced and used to cover the walls of a cell at Eastern State Penitentiary for an art installation titled Apokaluptein:16389067. Krimes’ work seeks to challenge events and dogmas, creating paradoxes in perception and memory that alter future translations and understandings of “authenticity.”

Below is a TedTalk that will bring light to the complexity of art and its role in prison. As you watch the video please think about the 10 questions James brings to light while his incarceration. Then discuss some or all of the areas mentioned below.

Do you have any personal experience with someone who uses art as a means of expression while incarcerated that you would like to share with your classmates?

  1. What does he consider as privileged?
  2. How does he think we can or can not effect change?
  3. Do you know anyone in prison who is an artist?
  4. Why did he start creating art?
  5. What do you think about his work titled “Purgatory”
  6. What did he accomplish using soap and playing cards as a medium to express his thoughts?
  7. As a none violent offender how did he end up in a maximum security prison?
  8. What do you feel about the images on bedsheet canvasses that created?
  9. What does he mean when he says “Modern Day Plantations”?
  10. What do you think of his work that includes live Betta fish?

Participation in asynchronous discussions is required and graded.

  1. There is a minimum of 250 words required in your discussion

Identify an activity, which individuals can complete during this presentation in order to gain knowledge about Psychological Concept(s) discussed.

Congratulations. You have been asked to create an MS PowerPoint presentation (i.e., Week 7 assignment) in order to educate youth sport coaches and/or strength and conditioning coaches about sport psychology.

Suggestion – select a specific topic of interest, which is presented in our PSYC460 assigned readings. Examples include: Goal Setting, Imagery, Stress Management, Group Cohesion, or Exercise Adherence.

Create a MS PowerPoint (PPT) presentation and include notes within the presentationThe Notes section should be the script you will use for your presentation such that if you were unable to make the presentation, someone else could present the information by reading what you’ve written in the Notes section. Additional Information re: MS PPT Notes is discussed later in the assignment’s instructions.

The Sport Psychology presentation must be at least 10 slides in length (not including the title and reference slides) and include components such as the following:

  • Title
  • Table of Contents
  • Primary Topic of Presentation
  • Introduction of Presentation’s Main Objective(s)
  • Identify and Define Important Psychological Concept(s) associated with Presentation’s Objectives
  • Explain how these Psychological Concept(s) can influence athletic performance (cite information from at least three (3) academic publications [i.e., journals – (e.g., The Sport PsychologistJournal of Sport and Exercise Psychology)]. — Suggestion – You can use the APUS Library (see “APUS Library” on PSYC460 home page) in order to locate scholarly publications (e.g., academic journals). “SPORTDiscus with Full Text” can be a useful database when completing your literature search.
  • Present one (1) web link for a video pertaining to Psychological Concept(s) discussed in presentation. — When identifying the video in the presentation, just insert the web link on the slideAPUS has size restrictions on uploads, and incorporating the video into the presentation will often make the PPT too large.
  • Identify an activity, which individuals can complete during this presentation in order to gain knowledge about Psychological Concept(s) discussed.
  • Conclusion
  • References (as well as in-text citations should be displayed in APA format). In-text citations may be included within the Notes section of each slide. Information re: American Psychological Association (APA) format is presented in this course’s Resources or www.apastyle.org. Also, a suggestion – visit the APUS Library to review Writing@APUS (see “APUS Library” tab located on left side of course’s home page).

Please be sure to review the MS PowerPoint do’s and don’ts document (see attachment). Remember, the MS PowerPoint must include a Notes section.

Additional Information re: Notes section:

Notes are placed on the same slide (i.e., beneath) information being presented pertaining to a specific area (e.g., Introduction). See “Click to add notes” at bottom of slide – notes will be placed in this area. Suggestion – use MS PPT “help” to review instructions for inserting “speaker notes” using your specific version of MS PPT.

If Notes are not included within the same slide, a 10-point deduction will be assessed prior to reviewing a student’s submission.

Here is an example:https://support.office.com/en-US/article/Create-speaker-notes-fc59586b-888f-4ebf-ab07-8a3cc8297867

Please review “More Tools” (see tabs on left side of course’s home page) to review policies concerning Plagiarism.

Please submit your assignment as an attachment (in an MS PPT ppt. or MS PPT pptx. file format)  titled “Your Last Name Week 7 Assignment.” For example, the MS PowerPoint file would be titled: Johnson Week 7 Assignment. Avoid typing your entire assignment in the text box provided within each assignment.

Explain how your topic relates to health/mental health and adjustment. This can include how knowledge of your topic can help people live better lives.

Using between 350 and 400 words create a tri-fold health brochure on the topic of Posttraumatic Stress.

You will use the Microsoft Word pamphlet template. The pamphlet needs to be visually interesting and use appropriate images. This project must have 350 – 400 of your own words. Quotations are not part of the word count. Grammar and spelling are important.

You must cite all of your sources using APA style. Graphs and tables must be cited though pictures need not be.

You will use a tri-fold style pamphlet and all panels must have text. Your name and topic go on the front panel and works cited go on the back panel or on a separate page.

Create Content! Be sure to meet these four content requirements.

  1. Be sure to clearly (and in your OWN WORDS) define all key terms.
  2. Explain how your topic relates to health/mental health and adjustment. This can include how knowledge of your topic can help people live better lives. For example, for a health issue, explain what will happen if someone does not address it, including causes, progression, and treatment.
  3. Include your name, PSY 118 section # (i.e. 0004) and semester (i.e. Spring 2019) on the cover of your brochure.
  4. Be sure to write for the general public.  Write as if someone has no knowledge of this psychology course, so over – explain as needed (key terms).

Sources and Citations:

You will need to find at least four reliable sources to gather information from, and summarize using your own words. You may use direct quotes, but sparingly. Please cite these appropriately using APA style.

You may use your textbook as one of your sources. (Weiten/Hammer/Dunn “Adjust” student edition)

You must use at least one source that is non – internet.

You can quote from someone with experience in the area, but you must be sure to give proper credit, and share their credentials (i.e. they must have some expertise in the area).

Get creative!

Use a template.

The easiest way to create a brochure is to use either a Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher pamphlet template.
