How does your family communicate about or view death? What impact does communication with loved ones have on the death and dying process?

Instructions
As we explored this week, late adulthood is a dynamic, rich time of life with many transitions and times of both growth and loss. One of the most profound experiences in late adulthood is that of death and dying – both our own death and the loss of loved ones. In our readings this week, we learned about how important cultural contexts are in understanding the death and dying process. As current/future healthcare professionals, having an understanding of how others process death and grief is key to being able to provide quality support and care. For our final assignment for this class, you will be reflecting on the following scenarios.

Part I: Imagine…you are 77 years old. You have lived a happy, fulfilling life, but have recently learned you have terminal cancer and are reflecting on how you want to spend your last few months and what you would like for your final wishes. In 1-2 pages, describe what you would like this last chapter of your life to look like. Consider:

1. What is your cultural heritage? What cultural traditions do you or your family hold that would impact your dying process and last wishes? (i.e. I’m Irish and my family and cultural heritage view death as a time to celebrate the life of a loved one with a long Irish wake, stories about our loved one, laughter, etc. We view funerals as a time to be very emotionally expressive about our loss).

How does your family communicate about or view death? What impact does communication with loved ones have on the death and dying process?

Part II: Imagine…you are a nurse, social worker, hospice volunteer or other healthcare professional working with a 77-year-old terminal cancer patient who is struggling with her end of life decisions. She is stoic and hard-working. Her culture values privacy and independence. She doesn’t wish to burden her family and so changes the subject anytime her children try to broach the topic of her final wishes, taking care of her house/pets, her will, etc. She becomes uncomfortable anytime you or other care providers ask to discuss her wishes on things such as DNR orders, religious wishes, or final arrangements. Her children are concerned about her and are worried they don’t know how to best fulfill her wishes and are imploring you to help. In 1-2 pages, consider:

1. How might your own views on death and dying impact your work with this patient?

2. How might you seek to guide or help this patient and her family through this time?

3. What cultural context might be at work here to consider?

Remember, as you reflect on these topics, connect your own experiences and ideas to the theory and research we are learning about in class, referencing your text and at least two other sources.

Create your very own social media site for people who are considered to be in the late adulthood portion of life. Include the following components: Name of your site

SOCIAL NETWORKING DURING LATE ADULTHOOD

Older people text, tweet, and stream less than younger ones. Compared with emerging adults, older adults own fewer computers, are less connected to the Internet, and avoid social networking. Yet elders who have strong social networks and engage in cognitively stimulating activities tend to live longer, healthier lives. With the knowledge that you have about development and social media, please answer the questions below and complete the following tasks:

What are the major reasons for the digital gap between the older and younger generations?

Is the digital gap in social networking likely to increase or decrease in the future as current technologically savvy generations become “the older generation”?

Using the model of primary, secondary, and tertiary care, what steps could individuals and communities take to reduce the size of the digital gap?

Using Facebook or Twitter as a model, how would you modify popular social networking sites to be “friendlier” to older adults? Can you observe any ageism that occurs on these sites?

Create your very own social media site for people who are considered to be in the late adulthood portion of life. Include the following components:

  • Name of your site
  • Purpose of your site
  • Motto of your site
  • How you would explain (in step-by-step detail) the way that your site works?
  • What are the benefits of your site for this group vs. the other popular sites?
  • What tech support is available for those who experience issues with operating your site?

TRAIT THEORY AND PERSONALITY

The Internet contains a wealth of information about the various approaches to studying personality, including trait theory. For this activity, please visit the Keirsey Temperament Website ( http://keirsey.com ), complete the Keirsey Character Sorter and Keirsey Temperament Sorter II and follow up by answering the questions from Handout 3 (attached).

Internet Activity: Trait Theory and Personality

Trait theory is one of the most popular approaches to studying personality. Researchers who work from this perspective search for identifiable, enduring patterns of behavior and thought processes that seem to apply to all people. To learn more about trait theory firsthand, visit the Keirsey Temperament website (http://keirsey.com) and complete the Keirsey Character Sorter and the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II. Then complete the following questions:

1. How does the creator of this website define temperament?

2. What determines temperament?

3. How stable is temperament over the life span?

4. What are four basic temperaments? Briefly describe each type and give an example of each from the world of science, politics, or the arts.

5. Do you fit one of these patterns? Which one?

6. What role does temperament play in choosing a mate? What temperaments attract each other?

7. How valid do you believe these online scales to be as measures of personality?

What is the cocktail party effect?  Why might this be useful to us? (See e-Readings “Sensation and Perception”, Sec 4.5) attached.

This is two parts/discussions and needs to be answered in full. No plargism.

1) States of Consciousness of Left and Right Brain

This is a video on how the brain interprets information.  It concerns states of consciousness and how we perceive the world.  And, you will learn and remember the functions and importance of the left brain and right brain for all time!

Please check it out.  Its about 18 minutes.  I would love your comments and thoughts on this one.  What did you learn?  What are the functions of the left and right brain? Your thoughts.

Are you more Left Brain or Right Brain?

So, here is a test that might help.   Do you believe the results are valid, i.e., do they measure what they are supposed to measure?  Or they  reliable, i.e.,  you would get the same score again, or do you think we could be more left brain and then more right brain as we age, or vice versa?  Your thoughts?

Note that you do not need to register or enter your email, or pay for anything to take this test.

If you would like to do so, find another test for us on the left/brain right/brain and we can compare our results.

2) Selective Attention and the Cocktail Party Effect

What is selective attention?  Go to:  http://www.theinvisiblegorilla.com/videos.html   Watch the first video, then  the second.  Then scroll down to the Original Door Study and watch that one.  What is going on in this video?  What is the purpose of selective attention?

What is the cocktail party effect?  Why might this be useful to us? (See e-Readings “Sensation and Perception”, Sec 4.5) attached.

Discuss three ways your attitude towards the opposite sex was enlightened or would change as a result of what you learned from this project.  If you would not change your attitude, why?

We are socialized at every stage in life to conform to our gender identity. Societal reinforcement of tendencies of gender identity is relentless. For example, in hospitals, little girls are wrapped in pink and little boys in blue. This difference in colors influences how we learn and how we internalize our role in our society.

Girls tend to grow up to play feminine roles and boys tend to grow up to play masculine roles. This differentiation of gender identity has implications in social stratification. The videos given below will provide you with a better understanding of the differentiation of sexual identity from an earlier generation.

Search for and watch an episode of at least one of the following shows. You may find these videos using a variety of search methods including visiting your local library, using Netflix or your local video store, or searching on YouTube. If you have difficulty locating an episode of one of the following shows, contact your instructor for assistance in finding an alternative.

  • I Love Lucy
  • All in the Family
  • The Mickey Mouse Club
  • The Honeymooners
  • Leave it to Beaver
  • Father Knows Best
  • Gilligan’s Island
  • The Brady Bunch
  • I Dream of Jeannie

As you watch the video, ask yourself the following questions:

  • To what extent have things changed and to what extent have they remained the same in regards to gender roles, expectations, division, and identity from the time this show was originally popular and today?
  • How conscious and sensitive are the characters regarding gender prejudice, power inequality, and subordination?
  • Did they take inequality of the sexes for granted?

Based on your readings and understanding that you have gathered after watching the above-noted video, write a short biographical description of your life if you were to wake up tomorrow morning in the time period of the video you watched and find you have a different gender identity. Write a description of how you lived your life a day after your hypothetical change in gender as you answer the following questions:

  • Discuss how you would react on finding out that your sex is opposite. Would you feel a sense of relief, indifference, or elation? Why?
  • Discuss three ways your attitude towards the opposite sex was enlightened or would change as a result of what you learned from this project.  If you would not change your attitude, why?
  • Write down the ideas and attitudes you have taken for granted a member of your actual gender. Consider how your roles at home and in the office would change if you were a member of the opposite gender.
  • Relate the ideas of sexism and racism to the videos.  How do you think sexism and racism have changed since the 1950s?

Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.
