The Abiline Paradox:  The Management of Agreement

Whereas, most of us are familiar with the Bystander Effect and Zimbardo’s Prison Study, this study is very different for those of us who might not have had any courses in organizational psychology.  As you will see many of the concepts we have learned early on in introductory psychology, social psychology and other courses come into play in this case.  See what you think.

Please click on the following link and enter your last name and ID number.

Your assignment:

I found the list of objectives for this article on page 66 would be a good starting point for our discussion.  You need not discuss all of these issues in depth, but try to hit the high points of 4 or 5 if you can. I have rephrased these for you below.   Also, please relate some of the concepts you have learned in your other courses whenever you can.

1) What is the Abilene paradox?  Describe some of the the symptoms of organizations caught in the paradox.

2) Tell us about one of the case studies that Harvey (1974) describes on pages 67-69.

3) Harvey discusses 5 factors when analyzing the paradox.  Discuss at least two of these and their importance in the paradox.

4) On page 73, Harvey discusses several terms that describe the risk factors of his model (A Possible Abilene Bypass). Discuss several of these as they relate to his model and to your understanding of these terms in social psychology.

5) How would someone go about diagnosing the paradox?  What suggestions does Harvey make?

6) What are his recommendations for coping with the paradox?

Your thoughts, and comments, please.

1. An attorney refers many clients to you for psychological evaluations. A close friend of yours has retained this attorney, who refers your friend to you for a very important psychological evaluation.  The attorney tells your friend that you are the “best” and the “best” is needed in this case.  You are strongly encouraged by both the attorney and your friend to do the evaluation.
2. You have an Asian-American client who has adjusted a very busy schedule in order to be able to attend therapy sessions. You cancel a session to attend a funeral for a family member.  The client becomes irate and demands to be told the reason why you cancelled.
3. The partner of a client who you have been treating for severe depression and suicidal ideation sends a letter to you. Should you open and read it?

4. You have worked for several years with a African-American man who has a history of rejection by women.  He has worked through many issues and finally has a suitable and loving relationship. He is very grateful to you and strongly encourages you to attend the wedding.
a. If you decide not to attend, how would you address this with your client?
b. If you decide to attend, how would you address this with your client and at the wedding?
5. A gay client has a terminal disease and he has decided to stop treatment and all “heroic” measures. While not mentioning suicide, he has disclosed looking into “options” to alleviate his suffering.
6. You treated a Native American male for alcohol use and abuse several years ago. When you and some friends go to a casino for a weekend, you encounter this person who tells you and your friends that he now has a good job at the casino thanks to the work he has done with you.  When you go to check out, you are told that your room and dining expenses have been “comp’d.”
7. A Latino female client reports sexual abuse by another therapist.  When you encourage her to report this, she indicates that she wants you to do this, as she does not want to get the other therapist in trouble.
8. A fragile female client who believes that she has made great progress would like to enter a training program to become a mental health professional. The client wants you to write a letter supporting her entrance into a training program. You are not sure she is sufficiently mentally healthy to work as a professional.
9. You have a private practice and teach graduate students who are studying to become mental health professionals. You are approached by a student in the last class in the program with a request to begin individual therapy with you.
10. You have worked with a client who is a fellow professional. You both agree that you have much in common.  The client has made excellent progress, and has terminated therapy. What should you do when, shortly after treatment has terminated, the client calls and suggests that you purchase season tickets for a series of theatrical performances?

Please describe the ways in which some of today’s music reflects each of the three philosophies: ethical egoism, nihilism, and postmodernism.

Postmodernism is a response to modernism, the idea that our reasoning abilities provide us access to the Truth about reality. For modernists, it is through our reasoning abilities that we can best develop our moral and social characters. In contrast, postmodernists challenge the notion that there is any kind of universal truth. Indeed, what we perceive as truth is socially constructed. Accordingly, meaningful ethical action is often the result of challenging and subverting these dominant storylines or paradigms we create about our world. This activity aligns with module outcomes 1 and 3.

Discussion Question

Prepare for your discussion by studying the Module 4 readings and viewings. Then respond to the following:

  • To what extent do you believe our opportunity for creating meaningful, ethical action in the world lies more with the modernist perspective, such as Descartes and Kant (i.e. divine command theory, deontology, etc.), or the postmodern philosophies of Michel Foucault, Mike Ventimiglia and bell hooks? Please offer a specific example of how your chosen approach can serve to create a more ethically ideal world.
  • Please describe the ways in which some of today’s music reflects each of the three philosophies: ethical egoism, nihilism, and postmodernism. Please share links to music videos to illustrate your point. Be sure to reference specific lyrics in your posts.

Initial Discussion Post

Your initial post should be at least 250 words and must substantively integrate the assigned readings from the module with proper APA style formatting. You may use additional sources and materials as long as they are relevant to the discussion and cited properly

Post your assessment selections and reasons why you selected these assessments. What would be the pros and cons of using each? Which would you select for this client?

Please no plagiarism and make sure you are able to access all resource on your own before you bid. Main references come from Neukrug, E. S., & Fawcett, R. C. (2015) and/or Encyclopedia of Counseling (2017). You need to have scholarly support for any claim of fact or recommendation regarding treatment. APA format also requires headings. Use the prompt each week to guide your heading titles and organize the content of your initial post under the appropriate headings. Remember to use scholarly research from peer-reviewed articles that are current. I have attached examples and expectations, so you can see how to make full points. Please follow the instructions to get full credit for the discussion. The client Tracey is attached with the diagnosis. I need this completed by 01/07/19 at 4pm.

DISCUSSION POSTS— For your Main discussion posts, I require that all posts be a MINIMUM of 250 words. The main post must contain a minimum of two (2) different references from a peer reviewed journal or scholarly book or scholarly website. It is a good idea to use your Learning Resources each week. Case Study and Assessments from MMY

How do clinicians find and select an appropriate assessment to administer to a client? One source of information is the Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY). As you review the descriptions of the cases in “Practice Making a Diagnosis,” from Neukrug and Fawcett, consider issues that may be relevant and that you would like to assess. Review the list of possible issues in the handout and select two that you would like to explore further through the MMY.

To Prepare:

  • Review the descriptions of      cases in Exercise 3.3: “Practice Making a Diagnosis.”
  • Select one of the cases and      consider assessments you would use to explore with this client.
  • Search the Walden Library for      the Mental Measurements Yearbook as follows:
    • In the Walden Library,       select Databases A-Z on the home page.
    • Select M from       the alphabetic menu.
    • Select Mental       Measurements Yearbook with Tests in Print from the options.

From the Learning Resources cases, identify two assessments in the MMY that you think would best provide information for you to consider exploring with this client.

By Day 3 of Week 7

Post your assessment selections and reasons why you selected these assessments. What would be the pros and cons of using each? Which would you select for this client?

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.
