What steps would you take in this session to make sure that Jamila has the resources she needs right now? How would you help Jamila develop a plan to manage the current crisis?

Sometimes, clients come into the counseling session with an immediate crisis. They need an immediate solution to a problem. Counseling in these situations needs to be focused and goal oriented.

Jamila has been working with her counselor on learning to better manage her 9-year-old son. Last night, her son was hit by a car and is in the hospital. This has created a number of problems:

  • She has to arrange childcare for her daughter so she can stay with her son in the hospital.
  • He will need some special care when he gets home because he will be in a wheelchair.
  • She is fearful that she will lose her job as a teacher’s aide in the local public school.

Write a 750-1,000-word paper addressing the following:

  • How would you prioritize Jamila’s concerns in the counseling session? What would you address first?
  • What steps would you take in this session to make sure that Jamila has the resources she needs right now?
  • How would you help Jamila develop a plan to manage the current crisis?
  • How could an interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team help in this situation? Give an example of at least one interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team member that would need to be added to her team and why.
  • Describe how consultation would be used when working with Jamila.

Include at least three scholarly references in your paper.

Describe any challenges you may experience between the meaning you hold based on your personal beliefs and working within the client’s potentially different belief framework.

Upon hearing the stories of sometimes horrific atrocities clients or client families have experienced, you as a social worker may find yourself confronting existential questions such as Why? For example, Why do horrible events happen to good people? Why do people abuse their children?

Trying to make sense of such trauma is not easy, and you may seek answers to these existential questions your whole life. And yet, there are opportunities for growth despite trauma for both clients and social workers. This is known as post-traumatic growth, where a renewed sense purpose or a more profound outlook on life is the by-product.

In this Discussion, you work to seek meaning from the trauma your clients experience and the subsequent healing you help your clients achieve in your social work practice.

To prepare:

  • Read about trauma-informed social work, and read this article listed in the Learning Resources: Vis, J.-A., & Boynton, H. M. (2008). Spirituality and transcendent meaning making: possibilities for enhancing posttraumatic growth. • Reflect on your fieldwork, or perhaps identify an existential question that might arise in working with the client in the case study you have selected throughout the course.
  • In 3 to 4 brief sentences, describe where there is potential for growth for the client as a result of the trauma.
  • In 3 to 4 brief sentences, explain where there is potential for growth for you, the social worker, as a result of listening to the client’s stories and bearing witness to their trauma.
  • Describe any challenges you may experience between the meaning you hold based on your personal beliefs and working within the client’s potentially different belief framework.

Fifth Amendment

Question: Why should the police be required to advise suspects of their Fifth Amendment rights when police are not required to advise people who consent to searches that they need not give consent?  What is the difference? When does Miranda apply?  Give examples.  Support your position.
