An African-American mother is concerned that her child may have an attention deficit problem. She goes to the teacher, who supports her concerns, and they go to the assistant principal requesting testing for a possible learning disorder. The mother asks if the child could be given an individual intelligence test that can screen for such problems, and the assistant principal states, “Those tests have been banned for minority students because of concerns about cross-cultural bias.” The mother states that she will give her permission for such testing, but the assistant principal says, “I’m sorry, we’ll have to make do with some other tests and with observation.” is this ethical? Professional? Legal? If you were a school counselor or school psychologist and this mother came to see you, what would you tell her?

Unit III Essay

Wade and Tavris explain that each person’s body experiences ups and downs throughout the typical day. In fact, biological rhythms, the fluctuations that occur in one’s biological system, dictate numerous factors within one’s body, including hormones, urine output, blood pressure, and our reactions to stimuli. Most of the time, our biological rhythms are in sync with the external environment, and they typically occur within a 24-hour cycle known as circadian rhythms. In this assignment, you will keep an hourly record of your mental alertness level for a minimum of three days using the following five-point scale: PSY 1010, General Psychology 2

1–extremely drowsy or mentally lethargic 2–somewhat drowsy or mentally lethargic 3–moderately alert 4–alert and efficient 5–extremely alert and efficient At the end of your observation period, you should compose an essay that defines circadian rhythms and explains how one’s biological clock works. Additionally, you should describe what happens when it does not work properly. You must also address the following questions in your essay: Did your level of alertness follow a certain pattern or circadian rhythm? Did you reach a noticeable high and low point once every 24 hours, or did you have a shorter rhythm? Did your level of alertness rise and fall numerous times throughout the day? If you performed this activity on the weekend, were your cycles the same as during the week? Finally, think about how this experiment affects your life and your perception. What other factors influence your perception? To conclude your essay, you should discuss four psychological factors that could be used to explain how you perceived the world around you. Draw on the research from the textbook as you compose your essay. In addition to your textbook, you must use at least one other academic source. Your response should contain an introduction and conclusion and be at least one page in length, but it can be longer if necessary to address all aspects of the assignment. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

What would be your treatment protocol? Review your emotions in reacting to all of the above scenarios. What is there about this kind of crisis that makes it so potent and emotional for us?

You wanted to work with childhood victims of sexual assault, but now, sitting in front of you, you have a mother who you firmly believe knew about the continuous sexual assaults perpetrated on her ten- and twelve-year-old daughters but did nothing to stop it because her drug-dealing boyfriend was providing her with money, a car, and luxury furnishings for her apartment. The problem is that no one can prove that. The mother was overwrought when the school counselor found out and reported the assaults, and her story was believed, both by the cops and in the courtroom; thus, the girls have been left in her custody. You have been assigned to work with her in family therapy, and you are about to have your first session with her.

Present a brief summary of the scenario and address the following questions (approximately 275-300 words). What preconceived notions do you have going in—what are you REALLY thinking about her?  Indeed, how would you prepare yourself to treat the mother as a victim/survivor as well? What would be your treatment protocol? Review your emotions in reacting to all of the above scenarios. What is there about this kind of crisis that makes it so potent and emotional for us?

Provide an introduction (include research question, applicable theory, and introduce the key areas of your study. Assert clear talking points. How the literature is presented should be clear

Assignment 20

Using the articles from your quantitative paper and qualitative paper create a chart to provide a visual graphic of how the variables or criteria both quantitative and qualitative align with the selected theory in response to the research question. Add two studies using a mixed methods approach. Note quantitative data is generally statistical for these purposes and qualitative will describe what is happening. Select those factors that are relevant using both approaches. Restate research question or establish two questions. Articulate the applicability to the chart.

Submit chart using points of emphasis above. 1 or 2 pages.

On a separate document labeled assignment 21:

Submit Mixed Methods Studies Paper: Write a 3-5 page paper using three quantitative, three qualitative, and two mixed methods articles using the chart designed in Activity 16. Refine the chart as needed to reflect the focus of your paper. Include charts, tables, and graphs as an appendix at the end of the paper.

The main purpose for this activity is to present an issue via the exploration of clear factors and applicable theory as they relate to your research interest. This academic discourse will allow you to use your critical thinking skills to analyze the different factors and then draw conclusions based on the evidence you present.

Prepare a 3-5 page mixed methods paper on your specific topic of interest. Assert your research question and applicable theory. Then present your evidence to best support the point you want to make.   Use the following outline: Provide an introduction (include research question, applicable theory, and introduce the key areas of your study. Assert clear talking points. How the literature is presented should be clear.Present your evidence in a methodical manner as highlighted in your introduction.Provide a discussion of the two perspectives regarding the selected predominate factor and link to the applicable theory based on the articles you presented.  Use both quantitative and qualitative studies. Do not cut and paste from previous papers. This should be a synthesized draft. Finally, draw conclusions based on what you have presented. What recommendations can you make based on the evidence you present?Again, include the chart or table from Activity 16 to reflect the relationship of the factors you have identified to the theory and how they are important. Include the chart or table as an appendix to your paper. Your discussion does not include the cover page, references, or appendices.

Submit paper of your discussion using points of emphasis above. 3-5 pages include charts as appendices.
