Do the government regulations, policies, and oversight sometimes conflict with local or state regulations, policies, and oversight?

Prepare: Prior to beginning your journal this week, complete all course readings and assigned videos, review the Week Two Instructor Guidance, and the Discussion, “Policy and Your Life.” It would also be helpful to review last week’s readings.

Reflect: Once you have completed these assignments think about how American politics have and could affect your career aspirations. The Founding Fathers created a governmental structure that affects almost every aspect of our lives even today. For instance, if you are a criminal justice major, what parts of the U.S. Constitution are applicable to what you are learning in your major? If you are a business major, which branch of government – executive, legislative, or judicial – has, or will have, the greatest influence on your business ambitions? If you are a healthcare major, how does separation of powers in the U.S. government affect the operations of most economic, social, and political processes throughout the United States?

Also, think about how federalism and the U.S. Congress have affected or will affect your life. The federal structure ensures that there is a clear line between local, state, and federal government regulations, policies, and oversight—sometimes! Think about how federal statues affect your work or will affect your work in the future. Does Congress have oversight of any of the processes or products in your workplace? Do the government regulations, policies, and oversight sometimes conflict with local or state regulations, policies, and oversight?

Write: As you reflect on the information you learned this week, write in your journal, based on your current major and/or desired job, two detailed paragraphs about the following:

  • How a federal policy affects your current or desired workplace.
  • What role Congress has played in establishing workplace conditions in your current or desired job.

Your journal response must be a minimum one page, double-spaced. Justify your conclusions with facts and persuasive reasoning. Fully respond to all parts of the question and write your response in your own words.  Outside research and references are not required for journal assignments, but if you choose to utilize outside sources they must be correctly cited utilizing APA format both within the body of your journal and include a full reference page

Describe two or three specific actions taken by this person. What was the outcome of each action? Was it positive or negative?

Assignment: Stereotyping

Television and film producers have editorial control over their media products; they control all aspects of the TV program and/or movie with the intent to impart a specific set of values to the viewing audience. This is especially true for character development. Certain characters are made to look attractive, smart, kind, generous, and altogether likeable. Others, less so. The characters, likeable or not, are automatically associated with their lifestyle choices and, importantly, the outcomes those choices produce. People tend to like the characters whose decisions lead to desirable outcomes. TV and film producers can develop characters whose appearance and lifestyle choices reinforce familiar stereotypes (e.g., the careerist female who, having forsaken marriage and children, seems destined to live a lonely life). In this way, TV and film producers convey messages about what kind of people we should aspire to be and what sort of lives we should aspire to live.

For this Assignment, you will closely examine stereotypical portrayals in TV or film.

To Prepare
  • Review the Learning Resources for this week and think about how TV and film can function as a vehicle for delivering stereotypical messages (e.g., powerful women who sacrificed family for career and lamented their unmarried, childless status).
  • Reflect on television shows or films you have seen that employ stereotypical portrayals used by producers to condemn or endorse specific lifestyle choices.
Assignment:

Submit 3–5 pages, not including title page or reference page:

Your task is to choose a current (e.g., in the last 12 months) television program or a film and conduct a content analysis that identifies the stereotypical portrayals used by the producers to condemn or endorse specific lifestyle choices.

  • Choose one of the major characters in the movie or TV program you’ve selected.
  • Describe their physical appearance; are they made to look attractive?
  • What role does this person play in the story? Is it stereotypical? Are they effective in that role?
  • What is this person’s job? Is it stereotypical? Are they successful in their job?
  • Describe two or three specific actions taken by this person.
  • What was the outcome of each action? Was it positive or negative?
  • Do the actions/outcomes reinforce a stereotype?
  • Is the stereotype positive or negative?
  • How likeable and/or intelligent is this person?
  • How desirable is this person’s lifestyle?
  • What are ways to mitigate the stereotyping portrayal you identified in your content analysis?

Be sure your analysis is informed by social psychology theory and research.

In this assignment you will determine strategies to advocate for the counseling profession by developing a position statement. A position statement, like a white paper, is a report that presents both facts and opinions on a particular issue to inform readers and influence them. Often, a position statement concludes with a call to action and provides recommendations for next steps. (For examples, see Mental Health America’s Position Statements describing and calling for advocacy efforts on many issues impacting counselors.) Position statements are primary tools for influencing organizational or government policies.

In this assignment, you will gather facts and make inferences to formulate a well supported argument for a position and make advocacy recommendations regarding a specific policy influencing professional credentialing (in other words, certifications or licenses) of clinical mental health counselors.

Assignment Preparation

To prepare your assignment, gather facts and formulate a well supported argument that counselors’ scope of practice should be expanded in some way (for example, extending Medicare provider status to mental health counselors, extending the Indian Health Service to recognize professional counselors as health care providers, or urging state counseling licensure boards to adopt the requirement of graduation from a CACREP-accredited counseling program for licensure to improve license portability across state lines).

Using SafeAssign

This course requires you to use the SafeAssign tool. The SafeAssign source matching tool is available to you via a link in the courseroom. SafeAssign supports the development of your skills in preparing written coursework. Use your originality report to help ensure that you have used outside sources ethically and effectively.

  • Note: Submitting a draft of your work to SafeAssign allows you make revisions before submitting it as your final work for grading. Submitting an assignment to SafeAssign does not submit the work to the course room for evaluation. This must be done separately; look for directions at the end of the assignment instructions.

Instructions

Note: Download and use the Advocating for the Counseling Profession Template to complete this assignment.

This assignment has two parts:

  1. The first part will be a brief introductory paper entitled Advocating for the Counseling Profession.
    • In this section of the assignment, describe the need for professional counselors to advocate on behalf of the profession.
    • Instructions for this part of the assignment are included in the Template.
  2. For the second part of the assignment, you will construct a Position Statement and Advocacy Recommendations paper.
    • Focus on an issue impacting the credentialing (certifications, licenses, accreditation and portability of licensure) of clinical mental health counselors.
    • Make a well supported argument that counselors’ scope of practice should be augmented or expanded so that counselors and clients can be better served.
    • Include your Position Statement and Advocacy Recommendations as Appendix A at the end of your Advocating for the Counseling Profession paper. The template shows how to include an appendix in an APA-style paper.

Your Position Statement and Advocacy Recommendations paper should have the following sections:

  • Topic and Background: Identify the topic and summarize what has been done in the past. Then succinctly describe the current state of affairs with respect to the issue.
  • Arguable Viewpoints: Briefly state at least two points of view on your topic.
  • Viewpoint: State the position you advocate.
  • Supporting Reasons: State your reasons for supporting your chosen position.
  • Call to Action and Advocacy Recommendations: Describe a process for counselors to follow in advocating on an issue that impacts their credentialing (licensure, certifications) and scope of practice. Include specific recommendations for action steps counselors can follow in advocating for the profession on this issue.

Review the scoring guide in the Resources to make sure you understand how this assignment will be graded.

Additional Requirements

  • Written communication: Communicate your thoughts in a manner that conveys the overall goals of the assignment and is consistent with APA standards for style and professionalism.

Which research method was used (case history, survey, naturalistic observation, psychological tests, laboratory observation, or experiment)?

Throughout this unit, you have learned about various research methods that are used by psychologists. For this assignment, you must choose three of the six scenarios listed below.

  1. Elena is a psychologist interested in understanding the impact of a sense of control on stress in humans. She brings in students from around campus and gives them a number of choices (increasing sense of control) before exposing them to a very difficult math test. She brings in another group of students and does not give them any choices before giving them the math test. She uses the scores earned by the two groups to see if those students given choices before the test do better than the students who did not get choices.
  2. Maxim is working with Joaquin in a counseling situation. Joaquin is a resident of the local jail, having been found stealing pastries from a bake shop. When caught, Joaquin claimed that the devil told him to do it and that he had done far worse things in the past. Maxim visits with him and makes notes about what he learns about Joaquin each time they are together.
  3. Glynnis is interested in understanding how people handle confrontation. She hangs out in a store near the customer service counter unobtrusively watching the agents at the desk. She records if they respond with passive aggressiveness, kindness, or anger.
  4. Gigi is a student in the marketing department. She wants to understand more about what attracts people to certain products. She creates a document with pictures of cereal boxes and asks people to rate which box they would be most attracted to when searching for a cereal. She then gathers information about their age, income, profession, and gender.
  5. Breck is interested in studying personal space and relationships. He gathers a number of students who are strangers, acquaintances, close friends, or in romantic relationships. He brings them into a classroom and asks them to begin a conversation with each other. He records the distance between the individuals having the conversation.
  6. Lucretia works at a children’s hospital. Her responsibility is to ask children who are coming to the hospital for the first time to respond to a number of questionnaires that may help determine their anxiety, depression, and pain levels.

After choosing three of the above scenarios, answer the following questions for each of your three scenarios.

  • Which research method was used (case history, survey, naturalistic observation, psychological tests, laboratory observation, or experiment)?
  • Identify the information in the scenario that supports your reasoning.
  • What ethical guidelines would need to be followed to conduct this study?
  • Which basic ideas behind early approaches in psychology most closely align with this method?

Your responses to the questions above for the three scenarios must result in a combined total of at least two pages in length for the assignment, not including the title page.If outside sources are used, please adhere to APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment. APA formatting, however, is not necessary.
